The Best Balance Transfer Credit Cards in America

If you are beginning the new year under a mountain of debt, then it might be time for you to find a balance transfer credit card. The good news is that there are credit offers that will allow you to transfer your balance to a new account with 0% APR for as long as 18 months. In fact, there are dozens of cards that feature these promotional financing offers, and applicants need to closely examine the competing products before choosing one that best meets their needs.

How to Pick a Balance Transfer Credit Card

Credit card users should look at the terms and conditions of these products, starting with the transfer offer itself. The CARD Act of 2009 requires that 0% APR promotional financing offers last for at least six months, however some current offers extend for as long as 18 months. Applicants should also note if the card has a corresponding interest-free financing offer for new purchases as well.

The next thing applicants need to look at is the balance transfer fee. This fee, which is almost always 3% of the amount transferred, is added to the cardholder s new balance. Applicants should also examine other rates and fees, such as the standard interest rate and the presence of any late fees, annual fees or foreign transaction fees. Thankfully, the most competitive promotional financing offers tend to have no annual fee, and they occasionally have no late fees as well. Finally, applicants can consider any other features and benefits offered by the card.

Finally, before you apply for a balance transfer credit card or any credit card, for that matter check the issuer s guidelines to make sure you meet the criteria for that card. Checking your credit scores beforehand can give you an idea of where you stand and what you may qualify for. You can see two of your credit scores for free on Credit.com. And as you work to pay down your balance, this calculator can show you how long it will take to pay it off .

The Winner: Chase Slate

The balance transfer offer: New cardholders receive 15 months of 0% APR financing on both balance transfers and new purchases. To qualify, balance transfers must be made within 60 days of account opening. The standard interest that applies to any remaining balance after the promotional financing expires is 12.99% to 22.99% APR, depending on the cardholder’s creditworthiness when the account was opened. The cash advance APR is 23.99% and the penalty APR is 29.99%.

Other features: Slate also features Chase’s Blueprint program that allows cardholders to avoid interest charges by paying some purchases in full while carrying a balance on others. The Blueprint program also includes budgeting and goal-setting tools.

The costs: There is no annual fee for this card, but there is a 3% foreign transaction fee imposed on all charges processed outside of the U.S.

1st Runner-Up: Discover it

The balance transfer offer: With this offer for the Discover it card, new cardholders receive 18 months of interest-free financing on balance transfers, with a 3% balance transfer fee, as well as six months of 0% APR financing on new purchases.

Other features: In addition to its competitive balance transfer offer, Discover is also a rewards card that features 1% cash back on all purchases, plus an additional 4% cash back on up to $1,500 spent each quarter at select retailers and categories of merchants. Other features include 100% U.S.-based customer service, a free monthly FICO score and cardholders first late fee waived. The standard interest rate is 10.99% 22.99%, depending on the cardholder s credit worthiness. There is a 24.99% APR for cash advances and no penalty APR.

The costs: There is no annual fee for this card and no foreign transaction fees.

2nd Runner-Up: Chase Freedom

The balance transfer offer: New cardholders receive 15 months of interest-free financing on both balance transfers and new purchases, with a 3% balance transfer fee, which is slightly less than the best offers available. After the promotional rate expires, cardholders will pay interest at the standard rate of 13.99% to 22.99% APR, depending on their creditworthiness when they applied. The cash advance APR is 23.99% and the penalty APR is 29.99%.

Other features: Freedom includes many of the features of both the Slate and Discover it cards. Like the Discover it, Freedom offers 1% cash back on all purchases or 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases from select categories of merchants that change each quarter. Like Slate, Freedom cardholders can utilize the Blueprint program at no additional cost.

The costs: There is no annual fee for this card, but there is a 3% balance transfer fee and a 3% foreign transaction fee added to all charges processed outside of the U.S.

How To: Use Lending Club To Find Out Your FICO Score Range For FREE

Lending Club (LC) is a person to person lending website that connects borrowers and lenders (which LC call investors ) together to try and create a efficient market place for loans without the overheads and vast profits that banks command.

Today we re going to look at how a borrower can find out their FICO score for free by using Lending Club. You ll first need to sign up for an account and start the application process to become a borrower (don t worry, we won t be borrowing any money in this guide and it won t affect your FICO/credit scores as we ll only be doing a soft inquiry which doesn t show up on a credit report).

When signing up to become a borrower they ll do a soft inquiry to work out your credit score, this is used to find out what APR (Annual Percentage Rate) they will charge you. We can use this information to work backwards to find out your FICO score.

Once you ve applied, you ll receive a 36 month APR. Get this and match it up with the table below to find out your loan grade:

APR s Loan Grade s Lending Club

Once you ve worked out your loan grade, look at the below table to find out your FICO score range:

FICO Score and Loan Grade. Table Two

The above table has since been removed from the Lending Club website, but we still believe there is a strong correlation between FICO scores and loan grades. You can always have a look at the other methods of getting a free FICO score if you want a more accurate idea .

  1. You receive a 36-mo APR of 13.84% if we match this up in table one we ll see a loan grade of B2. We can then look at table two and see that a loan grade of B2 will have a FICO score range of 700-706 .
  2. You receive a 36-mo APR of 6.78%. looking at table one will show a loan grade of A1. This indicates a FICO score range of 770+ (or 770-850 as 850 is the maximum)
  3. You receive a 36-mo APR of 23.99%. table one shows us this is a loan grade of D5. When we look at table two we ll notice that there is no FICO score range for D5, this means you have a FICO score under 660-663 and will need to increase your FICO score before you ll be accepted for a loan with lending club (and most other lenders).

Lending Club uses information provided by the credit bureau TransUnion, so you ll receive a TransUnion FICO score (also known as an Empirica score or TU FICO). We re currently unsure if this is the TU FICO 98/04 or 08 score, but because it only offers a range it s unlikely it matters.

If you ve used Lending Club before, we d like to hear your experiences was it cheaper than the rates your bank was offering? Did the above method result in you getting an accurate reading on your FICO score?

Know Your Score

By Mary Dalrymple | More Articles

When you left school, you probably figured that would be the end of grades, report cards, and disapproving comments scrawled in the margins of your term papers. What a cruel fate, then, to learn that another score follows you through adulthood.

That’s your credit score, and poor marks can do more than get you grounded. They can cost you a lot of money.

Your credit score is the result of a statistical computation meant to tell lenders whether it’s likely that you’ll default on a loan. The higher the score, the more trustworthy you’re deemed. This means your score will determine whether or not you can get a loan, and it will often determine the interest rate you’re charged.

If your score’s low, lenders will view you as a risky borrower. That means fewer will be willing to lend you money. Those who do will charge higher interest rates, costing you a lot extra over time.

What’s a good credit score? Fair Isaac. which issues the nation’s leading credit scores, marks individuals’ credit worthiness with score of 300 to 850. They report that the national median FICO score sits at 723. Half of us score higher than that, and half of us score lower. You’ll have three of these scores, one based on the information held by each of the three major credit reporting agencies.

Experian. one of those three agencies, also reports that the average American scores 673 in its version of a credit score, called the PLUS Score. That’s based on a representative sample of 3 million consumers. Their scores can range from 330 to 830.

What goes into a credit score? It’s not a random number picked by a faceless bureaucrat in a grey, concrete building (though many a borrower has often wondered whether that’s the case). Fair Issac has released some information about what goes into its FICO score. Here are the major components, ranked in order of their importance.

The first and most important component of your credit score reflects your payment history — whether you’re timely or tardy paying your credit and debt accounts. That includes credit cards, retail accounts, installment loans, mortgages, etc. Any information about past due accounts, delinquent accounts, and debts sent to collection will be factored in here. Any bankruptcies, judgments, suits, liens, and other items show up here, too. On the positive side, this portion will reflect your good behavior when you’re punctual. This factor accounts for 35% of your score.

Second, accounting for 30% of your score, is the total amount you owe to lenders. This portion compares the total amount of credit at your fingertips with the amount of debt you have outstanding. In other words, lenders want to know if you’re maxing out all your available credit. This section will also reflect the amount still owed on your installment loans.

Three other items count for smaller proportions of your credit score. One, comprising 15% of your score, is the length of your credit history. In general, the longer you’ve proved good creditworthiness, the better. The score looks, too, at the length of time since there’s been activity on each account.

Lastly, your new credit accounts and your types of credit accounts each comprise 10% of your score. Under new accounts, the score takes into consideration the number of recently opened accounts, recent inquiries, and your efforts to re-establish good credit if you’ve had payment problems in the past. The category examining types of credit looks at whether you hold credit cards, installment loans, a mortgage, or other types of accounts.

Dump all these factors in a big bowl with a pinch of salt, stir, and you’ll get your credit score.

How do you find out your score? You’ll have to pay for it. Although you’re entitled to free copies of your credit reports each year, the reporting agencies do not have to divulge your score without getting a little cash from consumers.

If you find you’re below average — and definitely if you’re heading toward the bottom end of the spectrum — you’ve probably got some room for improvement. The next part of this series will look at how bad credit can cost you; and then we’ll look at fixing your credit report to reap the benefits.

What is a Bad Credit Score?

Advertiser Disclosure January 29, 2015 by Gerri Detweiler

Most people have a gut feeling about their credit it s either great, good or bad. But what is a bad credit score really?

First, it s important to understand that there are many different credit scoring models out there and each may use a different scale or numbers to convey information. For example, all FICO score range between 300 and 850 with 300 being the lowest (or worst) possible score, while 850 is the highest (or best) possible score.

The range for VantageScore credit scores has traditionally been between 501 and 990, with the higher number representing the strongest score. But the newer version, VantageScore 3.0, has a range of 300 to 850.

The companies that develop credit scores FICO and VantageScore, for example do not decide which credit scores are good or bad. Nor do the credit reporting agencies that supply the credit reports that are used to create credit scores. Instead, it s up to individual lenders and insurance companies who use these scores to decide which scores demonstrate an acceptable level of risk.

Why Is Your Credit Score Better Or Worse Than Most? See your free credit score, and find out how you compare to other Americans. No credit card required.

They use them in a variety of ways, too:

  1. Determine the interest rate they will charge for a loan, or in the case of an insurance company, the discount they may offer on an insurance policy.
  2. Decide whether to extend credit, how much credit to approve, whether to increase (or lower) a customer s credit limit, or even to close a risky account.

In a way, then, there is no such thing as a bad credit score, since the number itself doesn t mean anything until a lender decides how to use it.

In other words, a credit score is only bad when it keeps you from whatever you are trying to accomplish, whether that is to refinance a loan, borrow at a low interest rate, or get the best deal on your auto insurance.

But in the real world, there are some assumptions that can be made about credit scores that fall into different ranges. When you are reviewing a credit score where the range runs from 300 850, you can generally assume the following:

How does my credit score compare to others?

  • Excellent Credit: 750+
  • Good Credit: 700-749
  • Fair Credit: 650-699
  • Poor Credit: 600-649
  • Bad Credit: below 600

Find Out Where You Stand

You can check your credit score each month using Credit.com s free Credit Report Card. This completely free tool will break down your credit score into sections and give you a grade for each. You ll see, for example, how your payment history, debt and other factors affect your score, and you ll get recommendations for steps you may want to consider to address problems. In addition, you ll also find credit offers from lenders who may be willing to offer you credit. Checking your own credit reports and scores does not affect your credit score in any way.

These are very general guidelines but they are by no means set in stone! Remember, every lender is different and will decide for itself how it will use credit scores to make decisions. Also, what will be considered bad credit by one lender may be perfectly acceptable to another. For example, with many mortgages, the minimum score required may be a 620, while some credit card issuers offering low-rate cards may reject applicants whose scores are lower than, say 680.

I just got hit for 5 (so far) ITA fees (foreign transactions) for $15 each totaling $60, taken by the bank for petty eBay purchases as small as $4.55 (300% fee) paid through PayPal, even though my bank s only involvement was to send money to PayPal in a domestic transaction (the actual paying is done by PayPal).

Seems the definition of international transaction isn t the only thing that has been changed – the fee is being charged even if your bank thinks that who they are transferring money to is going to use it for international payments. Clearly a fee gouge job, and the bank keeps quoting policy and regulations but will not furnish WHAT policies and regulations they are referring to.

This ITA fee crookery has become so widespread, that the federal rules on international transactions have been changed effective October 31st – two months ago. My bank (your bank) cannot even process a foreign transaction unless they notify you of the fee and give you time to cancel it.

G.L.C.

My credit union (!) Visa card charged me 2% with an ASOS.com purchase made via PayPal. Is this legal if there has been no disclosure of this additional charge at the time of the transaction by either the company or by PayPal?

I am sorry but I am not sure where you are getting that impression. Paid collections remain on consumers credit reports for 7.5 years regardless of whether they are medical collections or not. And I don t know what you mean about won by a consumer in the court of law. I am not following this either: Some of mine were sold before they were ever in default, but lo and behold, they are being treated as if they were in collections when they were never in collections. Did you post elsewhere? I am not familiar with that scenario.

http://www.Credit.com/ Gerri Detweiler

I am sorry I didn t understand your question. (And yes, I read the article and wrote it!

I guess what s confusing me is that you say you had collection accounts that weren t in default but had been paid in full. That s not a typical scenario so without knowing what exactly happened it s hard for me to comment on the credit reporting issues that resulted. Were you an identity theft victim perhaps?

At any rate, the fact that you won the lawsuits wouldn t automatically remove them from your credit reports; the credit reporting agency would have no way of knowing what happened in the courts. Either the furnisher of the information would have to stop reporting it or you would have to dispute it. Sometimes attorneys handling these kinds of cases will make that a stipulation of the agreement, or the judge may order it. But again, without knowing the specifics of your situation it s hard to comment.

I hope that s helpful.

Vincentius Veritas

I beIieve A Penny was referring to this article (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/fico-credit-score-better-debtors-183053850.html ) about recent changes to the FICO credit reporting. I venture to guess they believed they were responding to that article, hence their question for you regarding your reading of this article.

http://www.Credit.com/ Gerri Detweiler

Ah thanks. It makes more sense to me now.

A 73% debt to available credit ratio is high and can definitely hurt your scores. In addition, a collection account especially a recent one can drop a credit score significantly. Is it on your credit reports? If so then it is considered negative. We wrote about collection accounts here: The 7 Biggest Questions About Debt Collections Your Credit

I have a question I have three credit cards one secure one retail and one regular credit card but my score always go down never up and I never miss a payment and my cards are kept under 20% why is that and how long does it take for a credit card to benefit my score instead of hurt it

It s hard to know from what you are describing what the problem might be. Have you checked your credit reports? Here’s how to get your free annual credit reports. Credit scores are calculated from information in your credit reports, so it s important that those be accurate.

Paying the collection won t help your credit score in the long run. Can you negotiate to have them not report it if you pay it? That would be ideal. If so, get it in writing.

Don t close the accounts. That will make the ratio worse. It s looking at balances compared to available credit limits. If you can pay down your balances that should help.

Payday Loans Online No Credit Check Can Be A Huge Help

Jenny wants to know if it’s okay to get  payday loans online no credit check:

“I’m a mother of two and I have a bad credit because I couldn’t pay up my past debts when I lost my job seven months ago. I’m still coping to pay up my loans (I’m not irresponsible enough to run away from loans). But since I’m living from paycheck to paycheck now, I need to borrow occasionally to cover the current months’ budget while I repay my past loans. I thought that I’d be better off if I can borrow from lenders that don’t check on my financial record because this will mean faster processing and guaranteed approval. However, I’m having second thoughts considering some stories that I hear about this type of loans. Would you recommend these loans to someone like me?”

Payday loans online no credit check are practical, indeed. But we have to change the question a bit to give a better answer: When do I need to get payday loans online no credit check?

These type of loans are often used for emergencies and they are paid within a payday period. The popularity of payday loans online no credit check can be traced to the credit crunch or the period when many people started to default on their credit and they borrowed from banks and mainstream financial institutions. When banks started to shun away borrowers because of poor credit scores, payday loans online no credit check seemed a good option.

So how come payday loans are available when banks wouldn’t give out credit to these people? A huge caveat: loans are for small amounts while the interest rates and penalties are high and more severe because of the risks lenders face with borrowers who have defaulted in the past.

Lenders of payday loans online no credit check work on the model of volume business. They get as much borrowers as they can and they really don’t expect that all borrowers can pay back. Which brings us back to Jenny’s question. If payday loans online sound tempting, you should think again, because the Teletrack system that tracks your credit history is there for a good reason.

What is Teletrack?

It’s an industry-wide system that allows financial institutions, banks and lenders to see your credit performance. When you make a loan or payment, that record is put by the lender in a Teletrack system that says you’ve made that loan or payment. Teletrack systems are offered by private third-party providers like this company. The industry-wide system allows banks, lenders and you yourself to check on your credit score (read more on this in this online loans no credit check  article). Over time, your Teletrack record profiles your loan and payment performance, and this is what banks and mainstream lenders check to approve or decline your loan application. It goes without saying that lenders of payday loans online no credit check do not check your Teletrack. Sounds good? Not really.

Check and balance

Teletrack acts like a check-and-balance peg for both lenders and borrowers. For lenders, it gives them a clue if you’re a high- or low-risk borrower. Teletrack is not only a black-and-white tool used to accept or decline loan applications; it can also be used within the varying shades of loan amount and payment terms that lenders are willing to offer based on your credit score.

Why is it good for me?

For a simple reason that Teletrack is a good reminder and warning that we better pay off our debts to avoid ruining our credit scores. Without this “nuisance” it is far easier to default and forgo payments when no one, except the poor lender, will know anyway. Think of it as the note posted on the clubhouse billboard that lists members with arrears. Members wouldn’t want to be on that shame list so the tendency is to meet their obligations on time.

However, getting back to Jenny’s concern, we don’t discount the practical use of payday loans. In the UK and Canada, these loans have proven their worth. In times of financial difficulties, what are your options, really? So, how practical are they? It depends on how practical you want to make them. In short, payday loans are meant for emergencies and you must estimate how urgent and critical the emergency is to warrant payday loans online no credit check.

Learn more about credit score

If you have a good credit rating, you can get easy access to valuable loans. Learn all about credit score and how to boost yours. Improve your financial health through smart research and implementation.

One last thing

Lenders offering payday loans online no credit check may not be checking your Teletrack record, but your payment to this type of loans will be recorded. That’s a tell-tale against your credit score. But don’t worry, there are regulations that limit or even prohibit the use of your Teletrack to profile you. Two years ago, Daily Finance reported that a Teletrack provider was penalized for two million dollars for selling sensitive Teletrack data to marketers.

CONCLUSION

Payday loans online no credit check are practical as long as they are used for practical reasons. Medical emergencies and business emergencies can be valid, but hot offers and limited deals are definitely not.

What Is A Corporate Credit Rating?

Before you decide whether to invest into a debt security from a company or foreign country, you must determine whether the prospective entity will be able to meet its obligations. A ratings company can help you do this. Providing independent, objective assessments of the credit worthiness of companies and countries, a credit ratings company helps investors decide how risky it is to invest money in a certain country and/or security.

Credit in the Investment World

As investment opportunities become more global and diverse, it is difficult to decide not only which companies, but also which countries, are good investment opportunities. There are advantages to investing in foreign markets. but the risks associated with sending money abroad are considerably higher than those associated with investing in your own domestic market. It is important to gain insight into different investment environments and to understand the risks and advantages these environments pose. Measuring the ability and willingness of an entity – which could be a person, corporation, security or country – to keep its financial commitments or its debt, credit ratings are essential tools for helping you make investment decisions.

Three top agencies deal in credit ratings: Moody’s. Standard Poor’s (S P’s) and Fitch Ratings. Each of these agencies aims to provide a rating system to help investors determine the risk associated with investing in a specific company, investing instrument or market.

Ratings can be assigned to short-term and long-term debt obligations as well as securities, loans, preferred stock and insurance companies. Long-term credit ratings tend to be more indicative of a country’s investment surroundings and/or a company’s ability to honor its debt responsibilities.

For a government or company, it is sometimes easier to pay back local-currency obligations than to pay foreign-currency obligations. The ratings, therefore, assess an entity’s ability to pay debts in both foreign and local currencies. A lack of foreign reserves, for example, may warrant a lower rating for those obligations a country made in foreign currency.

Ratings are not equal to or the same as buy, sell or hold recommendations. Ratings measure an entity’s ability and willingness to repay debt.

The Ratings Are In

The ratings lie on a spectrum ranging between highest credit quality on one end and default or “junk ” on the other. Long-term credit ratings are denoted with a letter: a triple A (AAA ) is the highest credit quality, and C or D (depending on the agency issuing the rating) is the lowest or junk quality. Within this spectrum there are different degrees of each rating, which are, depending on the agency, sometimes denoted by a plus or negative sign or a number.

Thus, for Fitch Ratings, a “AAA” rating signifies the highest investment grade and means that there is very low credit risk. “AA” represents very high credit quality; “A” means high credit quality, and “BBB” is good credit quality. These ratings are considered to be investment grade. which means that the security or entity being rated carries a quality level that many institutions require when considering overseas investments.

Ratings that fall under “BBB” are considered to be speculative or junk. Thus for Moody’s, a Ba2 would be a speculative-grade rating, while for S P’s, a “D” denotes default of junk bond status.

The following chart gives an overview of the different ratings symbols that Moody’s and Standard Poor’s issue:

How to Dispute Items on Your Credit Report

When you read your free annual credit report, you may stumble upon inaccuracies in the items that are listed. Your credit report is so important that is vital to get any inaccuracies corrected. The process of disputing information on the credit report is provided and protected by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The act requires the credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax) to respond and work with you in an investigation into disputes. If it is found to be inaccurate, or the creditors are unable to prove their claim within thirty days, then the report will get updated.

There are a number of areas where the credit report can be inaccurate. A common mistake is listing late payments where your records indicate that you have made all payments on time. If you are in possession of canceled checks or statements showing the payment with a date, then you can get these entries removed. Outdated information on the credit report can also be disputed. All data, except for bankruptcy, has a seven year life span. The other big issue is if a fraudulent account appears on the report. This can be the result of identity theft or someone with a similar name showing up on your account.

The process of filing the dispute begins by writing the dispute and claim. A letter is written to the credit reporting agency, or their online dispute form utilized. From the time of filing, the credit reporting company has thirty days to investigate the dispute and come to a conclusion. The result is mailed to you along with a copy of your credit report if it has been changed. The best chance you have is to make a copy of the credit report at issue, encircling the disputed item or items and giving them numbers. Use the numbers in your letter to best explain your claim, providing rationale behind making the dispute. Be sure that you include all of your pertinent information, including you full name, address, date of birth, social security number, name of the creditor and account numbers, and above all else sign the document. There are other ways to dispute items on the report. You can contact the creditor directly and dispute the information with them. If you make such a claim to the creditor and indicate that the information on the report is incorrect, then according to the FCRA, they must include a note in the report that the item is disputed, or not at all. If an error is found then it must be removed.

You claim might not get a settlement in your favor. If the dispute does not end in your favor, then you can dispute the claim with the National Consumer Assistance Center. This will require that you are equipped with the documentation and evidence of the inaccuracy. And despite all that work, if the item gets removed, the creditor may put them back on the report afterward. If it is believed that the credit bureau is in violation of the FCRA, then the Attorney General s office should be contacted. There is the option to sue the bureau or creditor in state or federal court.

If you d rather solicit a credit repair company to help with disputing your errors, check out Lexington Law Firm .

‘Free’ credit score from Citi isn’t free, but it is nearly worthless

By: Amy Fontinelle, June 26th 2012

If you’re a Citi credit card holder, you might have recently received notice of a promotion to get a “free” credit score.

You shouldn’t sign up for this product.

Citi’s Benefit Builder website advertises the service as “complimentary optional protection” for Citi cardholders.

Both the website and the promotional email also state the service is free for 30 days; neither make clear what you’ll pay after the first month.

The terms and conditions do make it clear, however, that any fee will be charged to you automatically and in perpetuity unless you call Citi to cancel.

It’s also unclear how this service determines your score.

What’s more, the fine print says the scores you receive through this program could be significantly different from the scores a lender would actually use.

In other words, you’re getting an estimated credit score, which has little value.

It could, for example, give you a completely different picture of your loan eligibility than a real credit score would.

One of the sales points for Citi’s service is to “find out where you stand” so you’re not surprised.

The idea that consumers should know their credit scores in advance so they don’t face any unpleasant surprises when applying for a loan is a common marketing tactic.

But there’s really no logic in signing up for a third-party service.

When you apply for any loan, you’ll get your real score for free — the score that the lender you want to work with will actually use to judge your creditworthiness, to determine whether to approve you and to decide what interest rate to offer you.

If you’re worried about unpleasant surprises for a loan you expect to need several months or a year in the future, just apply for the loan well in advance of when you expect to need it. That way, you’ll know where you stand.

Merely knowing your score won’t tell you if you’ll be approved for any specific credit or loan product, anyway. Each lender has its own standards, and you’ll never know for sure if you’ll qualify before you apply.

You might wonder if applying for loans you don’t need is a good idea. Won’t it hurt your credit?

Applying for a loan results in only a very slight, temporary ding to your score.

And credit scoring formulas take into account that people tend to shop around for the best loan, so if you apply for multiple loans of the same type in a short period, you’ll only get dinged once.

You might see a drop of five points that will last for a couple of months.

Unless you’re on the cusp of a cutoff point — say, you have a 720 credit score and you want a mortgage that requires at least a 720 — this ding isn’t likely to result in your being refused for any loan.

You can stay on top of the data in your credit report to make sure it’s accurate and to keep an eye out for signs of identity theft by getting a free copy of your credit report once each quarter.

You are entitled to afree copy of your credit report from each of the big three credit bureaus every 12 months from AnnualCreditReport.com. By staggering your requests in four-month increments, you can stay on top of your credit file on a regular basis.

You won’t get your score, and this method isn’t foolproof since credit data can differ across agencies, but it’s free and it’s good enough for most people.

You can also request your credit report for free any time a lender, employer, insurance company or landlord denies your application because of your credit history.

Woodinville. WA

This is a personal guide I use to search public records. After a long journey trying to find that illusive free background check online. I finally settled on a system that I now use for my business and personal searches.

The reality is there is no complete system that offers a free background check. free criminal background check, or a free public records search. The only databases individuals can access for free are local government agencies. Which are limited by location and public record type. In order to see all background records, criminal records, and general public records. A specialized company is required. This company actively scans public records in all states and multiple government agencies. They then consolidate all records into one easy to use database. Unfortunately because of the work required to keep the databases up-to-date. Its a paid service.

Here’s my personal choice when I need a full background check.

Individuals looking for background checks, criminal records, and other public records can perform a free scan just by entering first and last name. The free scan will show you if any records exist. To access full details of the record a small fee is paid.

Click Here To Start a Free Scan.

Background reports will typically consist of the following.

General Public Records / People Search: Recorded documents and information that the law considers public information

Criminal Records: Public information of criminal activities. These records typically consist of basic violations such as traffic tickets, dui, dismissed and pending charges, to more severe violations.

Misdemeanors: Less severe violations that typically result in a fine.

Arrest Records: Records of prior arrests.

Felonies Crimes: These are serious offenses that include prison time.

More from Woodinville Patch

Sex Offenders: Individuals that are registered as sex offenders by the government to keep track of current residence and activities.

Marriage Records: Marriage certificate issued by the government.

Divorce Records: Divorce documents.

Civil Court Lawsuits: When a plaintiff incurred a loss and is suing for damages.

Other record types include: Real Estate Records, Birth Certificate, Death Records, Licenses, Bankruptcy, Foreclosures, and Federal Records.

How to do a free background check online, free criminal background check, or find free public records online. For anyone that just needs local / agency specific records and is willing to dig around; a limited free background check is possible. It helps a great deal to be search engine savvy.

For example by googling keyword phrase: Specific State Public Records (example “Texas Public Records “) you’ll get a variety of results. Look for domain names that end with .gov these are official state government websites. The official page will typically  provide instructions and have links to varies state agencies. By playing around with words (example “Houston Texas Property Records “) you’ll find results more specific to your needs. Try using state, city, county specific phrases and see what gives you the best results.

Not all states provide background checks free. Certain state databases might still charge a small fee for access. I use local databases for certain searches. But dont always have time to dig up the records myself or have time to check multiple states.

I prefer to use background check companies that specialize in this field and can be accessed 24 hours a day with great customer support.

  • Certified credit counselors are trained in the following: budgeting; credit; collections and debt management; consumer rights and responsibilities and bankruptcy.
  • Financial and personal information offered by clients is confidential. Meeting with a counselor, and identifying a debt solution, won’t impact your credit score.
  • Anyone considering a non-profit debt management plan or bankruptcy. must first undergo credit counseling.

Certified financial counselors conduct 20-40 minute interviews to gather information about a person’s financial situation. They are trained experts at evaluating the data, educating clients on debt relief options and explaining the pros and cons of debt management plans. Every solution is customized based on the consumer’s income and debt obligations. Help is available for making and balancing budgets, using credit effectively, managing money and starting a savings plan. It is not a “One Size Fits All” process, but the goal is the same for every client: Eliminate debt.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends contacting non-profit credit counseling agencies for in-person, over-the-phone or online interviews. Most non-profits offer credit counseling for free or at minimal cost.

The FTC website warns that non-profit status does not guarantee the services are free and suggests careful research before choosing a credit counseling company. If there is a cost, reputable firms will disclose their fee structure up front, in writing.

InCharge offers credit counseling services for free. The company has received an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau and counseled more than one million consumers since 1997.

What happens in a credit counseling session?

Credit counseling can be done in person, over-the-phone, or online. A client will answer questions about income, expenses, budgets and assets. It is best to have this information available when you begin the process.Clients answer questions about the circumstances that caused financial problems; steps taken to address the debt; cash flow available every month and any assets that could be used in solving the problem.

The information gathering usually takes twenty to thirty minutes. For clients who use the online counseling tool, a solution is presented based on the information provided. For clients speaking with a counselor on the telephone, the debt relief options are described in detail. Possible solutions include a Debt Management Program (DMP), bankruptcy, or further counseling.

Certified Financial Counselors at InCharge offer those options, plus referrals to other services (like those offering student loan solutions, mortgage counseling, etc), if that serves the client’s best interests. Read more about what happens during credit counseling .

Selecting a credit counseling agency

Choosing a credit counseling agency is similar to choosing a home or automobile. It pays to do research and seek advice from trusted sources, before making a final decision.

There are many places to go for credit counseling – non-profit agencies, credit unions, for-profit agencies, religious organizations, military family service centers – but not everyone involved in those organizations is qualified for this very important job.

Take time to do research and speak with family or friends who have been through the experience, before choosing a credit counseling agency.

Some important things to consider:

  • Make sure the agency is licensed and accredited. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) requires member organizations to adhere to strict standards and regular audits for data security, counselor accreditation and results-oriented customer service.
  • Be sure the organization is certified by Council on Accreditation before signing up for their program.Be certain the counselors are certified, preferably by the NFCC.
  • Contact the state attorney general or Better Business Bureau for records of complaints and how the agency responded to complaints.
  • Does the agency offer educational workshops and reading materials?Ask for a contract. Get everything – fees, services, time in the program – in writing.

For-Profit vs. Non-Profit Credit Counseling

There are many choices available for credit counseling, but both the FTC and the NFCC suggest you work with legitimate non-profit credit counseling organizations. The NFCC, which certifies Financial Counselors and companies, has approved 83 non-profit agencies. No for-profit companies are accredited by the NFCC.

“We pride ourselves on the fact that 100 percent of the money that consumers send our approved agencies, goes to the creditors,” Pam Carter, the senior director of membership at the NFCC, said. “We don’t hold anything back. That’s not always the case with the for-profit agencies.”

Financial counselors for non-profits operate under strict state and organizational guidelines designed to insure they act in their client’s best interests. Non-profits are frequently audited by states to insure they comply with all of that state’s regulations. Non-profits must demonstrate that they are acting in the best interests of all of their clients. For example, InCharge offers clients monthly newsletters with money-saving tips and stories of people who have gotten out of debt to help motivate clients to do the same.

InCharge also does community workshops and provides financial calculators that allow people to track their progress while eliminating debt.

wiseGEEK: What is a Credit Card?

The plastic credit card with a magnetic strip many people carry in their wallets or purses is the end result of a complex banking process. Holders of a valid card have the authorization to purchase goods and services up to a predetermined amount, called a credit limit. The vendor receives essential information from the cardholder, the bank issuing the card actually reimburses the vendor, and eventually the cardholder repays the bank through regular monthly payments. If the entire balance is not paid in full, the issuer can legally charge interest fees on the unpaid portion.

Individual banking institutions have their own policies when it comes to credit card applications. Customers may seek either a secured or unsecured card, depending on their individual repayment histories, or credit rating. A secured card requires the applicant to deposit an amount of cash equivalent to the credit limit desired. A deposit of $1500 USD, for example, should be enough to be issued a card with a $1000 to $1500 spending limit. If the customer fails to make sufficient payments, the deposited money will be used to satisfy the debt.

An unsecured credit card, on the other hand, is generally issued to those who have a good credit history and have demonstrated an ability to repay the accrued debt on time. Credit limits are determined on an individual basis, and may be raised or lowered based on performance. An unsecured card is essentially a pre-approved loan, with interest rates higher than a similar personal bank loan.

The main benefit of any credit card is instant access to more cash than a person may have on hand. A recent college graduate, for example, may have to purchase a business suit for employment purposes. Earning the $200+ USD needed for an average suit could take weeks, and he or she needs the suit in order to earn the income. Putting the suit on a credit card would be the ideal solution; the borrower could repay the balance with his or her first paycheck and few interest charges would accrue.

Credit cards often becomes problematic when the holder accrues more debt than a regular monthly payment can cover. The issuing bank does allow users to carry over balances every month, which is also called revolving credit. but significant interest rates may also accrue on those balances. Missing a scheduled payment can also prompt the bank to raise interest rates on a delinquent account. If a cardholder can only afford to pay the minimal amount due every month, he or she will not be reducing the actual debt incurred. The minimal payments may only apply to the accrued interest. This is a financial spiral many cardholders may experience if they don’t use proper spending restraint.

A credit card does give the holder an immediate credibility for services such as hotel reservations, car rentals and airline ticket reservations. Those without credit cards often have to guarantee their reservations with cash deposits or several forms of identification. Many credit card plans also include insurance coverage for theft or fraud. If a card is reported stolen and then used illegally, the cardholder would not be held responsible for unauthorized charges. A cardholder can authorize other people to use the card for purchases or services, however. Ultimately, the primary cardholder is responsible for all charges placed on his or her account.

3 Free Credit Reports

How To Get 3 Free Credit Reports Each Year!

The passing of the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) mandated that all U.S. citizens need to be given a free credit report each year from each of the 3 credit reporting agencies. The only requirement is that you must submit either an online or written request to each agency. The goal of this act (FCRA) was to ensure that each individual stays informed, avoids possible identity theft, and receives fair treatment when it comes to credit worthiness.

In the past, consumers had to pay or qualify based on fraudulent activity within the credit report. A few states had required that residents periodically be entitled to free credit reports, but now it has become the standard nationwide.

Because there are 3 credit bureaus and each one is required to give you a free report on an annual basis, you can request one from each of agency at different times of the year. I would suggest using the following schedule so you which agency to request a report from each time.

If there current month is:

January – April order your report from Equifax

If it’s May – August order from Esperian

If it’s September – December order from Trans Union

Please add this site to your favorites, so you will easily be able to access this information in the future.

When you make your first request just use the one that is closest to the month listed above. If it is in between two of them just pick the one closest to today’s date. After you make your first request, simply add a note to your calendar or cell phone to remind you to request the next report in 4 months. To request your free report online simply visit: annualcreditreport.com

When you fill out the form the first time, request the credit report from just one agency. In 4 months you will want to request one from a second agency and in 8 months you can request one from the third. Since the reports are very similar it works great to spread them out over the year in this fashion. This way you have regular access to credit reports with having to pay any membership fees.

Each bureau will offer you a variety of paid subscription services, however they are NOT necessary in order to receive your report, so simply decline the offers. The only exception being if you need to know your exact combined 3 in one credit score, that is not available for free. You can however estimate your fico score or get your transunion credit score for free .

For those of you who want to request their credit report via regular mail, you can use the following form:

What You Need To Know About A Free Credit Report – Canada

Canadian laws are very similar to US laws when it comes to credit. You can obtain a free credit report in Canada just like you can in the United States. You can apply to the same three agencies, which are Transunion, Experian and Equifax to get your free credit report. Canada has its fair share of con artists and identity thieves so it is imperative that you keep track of your credit report at least once a year.

Most people are not aware of identity theft until it happens to them. They think it sounds like something out of a spy novel. Identity theft is very common in Canada as well as other parts of the world. A thief uses your information that is usually obtained in some nefarious manner, to apply for credit in your name. He has the information, such as the credit card, routed to some other address. The address can even be in the United States.

Once the identity thief has the credit card in your name, he can use it to buy goods and return them for cash or simply to continue opening up more accounts in your name. Some identity thieves will steal a lot of different identities and keep moving around to avoid getting caught. Some will go full throttle and take out loans and even mortgages under an assumed name to get more cash. This happens throughout the world, but especially in countries like Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom where credit is often relied upon as a sign of good intent.

You can get your free credit report in Canada each year from the three reporting agencies. It is important to do this so that you can stave off any attempts to steal your identity. Identity theft can happen to anyone. People go through garbage to get information about people and even go through their mail. Anyone can be a target of such thieves. The one way that you can prevent it is to get a free credit report. Canada is very strict about prosecuting such thieves, so if you are the victim of identity theft, you must report it right away.

You can go online and get your free credit report. Canada citizens can obtain their credit report either directly from the reporting agencies or through websites that are available to get all three reports at one time and in a short amount of time. These websites often charge a fee for this service, but will also provide you with your credit score and will give you expedient service. If you feel as though you have been the victim of identity theft, or have recently lost a purse or wallet, you should get a free credit report. Canada is no different than any other country when it comes to identity theft. This crime is worldwide.

Protect yourself by getting your free credit report today. If you want to get one right away, you can do a search for free credit report Canada and find dozens of websites that will assist you in getting your credit reports. It is worth any small fee to make sure that you are protected.

I don t owe them anything, my FiCOs are in the 760 range, i have plenty of revolving debt, a mortgage, other major credit cards, department store cards, etc. Yeah, I could keep the account open and just not use it but this credit card provider, Chase, is just so scuzzy that i want nothing whatsoever to do with them.

Thanks for the answers so far. This is by no means my oldest trade line but does have a fairly high credit limit. It sounds like overall i have little to worry about.

Thanks for all the information. In case anybody is interested, here s my decision. I will keep the Chase card active and the account open but not use it for anything (I never run balances anyway). I am shopping for another card to bump my total credit limit before closing it. I have set my privacy policies to the maximum with Chase so that those robber barons can t sell my information. When I do close the account, I will send the request by return-receipt email asking them for verification that the account is closed. And, I am writing letters to the Better Business Bureau and my state s attorney general s office about some of Chase s business practices.

What is a credit reference agency and how can I check my credit file?

Most people are unaware of credit files and credit reference agencies, yet they have increasing importance in today s consumer credit world. When you apply for a loan, credit card, mortgage the lender will carry out a credit reference check by using a credit reference agency to look at your credit file.

Credit reference agencies

There are three main credit reference agencies in the UK, Experian, Equifax and Callcredit. They hold information on most adults in the UK which lenders use to determine the risk of lending to particular people. The information stored in individual credit files falls into three main categories:

Check your credit file – get a FREE 30 day trial with Experian

We ve teamed up with Experian to offer you a 30 day trial to your credit report.

Public record information – A credit reference check will reveal whether you re listed on the UK electoral roll, whether there are any county court judgements (CCJs) and Scottish decrees awarded against you, whether you have been declared bankrupt, had an individual voluntary arrangement, or been served with a repossession order.

Credit account information – lenders share information about their borrowers credit history by registering details with credit reference agencies. An individuals credit file will show whether they have kept their payments up-to-date in the past, whether they have loans outstanding with other lenders and, if so, whether they have kept the payments up to date.

Search information – the credit file also records credits searches carried out by lenders. A large number of credit file searches made over a short period of time could be seen as an indication of over-commitment, or possibly fraud.

A clean credit file doesn t necessarily mean you ll be regarded as creditworthy

Companies are not only interested in whether you might be a credit risk, they also want to make sure they will benefit from you. So, for example, credit card providers often reject applicants with good credit records because they have always paid their credit card bills in full in the past – and if you pay off your bill in full each month, the card provider can t charge you interest and therefore makes no money from you.

If you have a clean credit file because you have not borrowed in the past, that is you have no credit history, you re just as likely to experience problems getting credit as there is no data in your file to judge your creditworthiness. Some lenders require evidence that you have a good track record of repaying credit. These lenders may refuse to lend to you on account of (and despite of) your clean slate.

Checking your credit file

If you are having problems getting credit or being accepted for a mortgage, it is worth getting a copy of your credit file to check that the information held about you is correct and up to date.

The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to correct information held about you which is inaccurate. The credit reference agency will be able to advise you on how to remove or amend information you believe to be incorrect.

What is a credit reference agency?

A credit reference agency is an independent organisation that holds information about consumers or businesses (or both), to help banks and financial institutions decide whether to give them credit. In the UK, when a consumer applies for credit they give the lender information about themselves and their finances.

The lender will also get more detailed information from a credit reference agency. They can do this because lenders have all agreed to share information about their customers through the credit reference agencies. They each supply this information to the credit reference agencies to hold on their behalf. The credit reference agencies then act as independent go-betweens and work with the lenders to make sure the information is kept accurate and up to date.

What is Experian?

Experian is one of three credit reference agencies in the UK. We have two main purposes:

1. To help banks and financial institutions make fair and responsible lending decisions, while treating their customers fairly, as individuals.

2. To help consumers, banks and financial institutions, guard against fraud.

As the UK’s largest credit reference agency, we provide factual information to a wide range of businesses, including banks, building societies, finance houses, mobile phone companies and major retailers. This information helps them verify the identity of customers, prevent fraud, and decide whether or not the person applying for credit can afford it and is likely to repay them.

What credit reference agencies are there in the UK?

There are 3 main credit reference agencies in the UK; Experian, Equifax and CallCredit. CallCredit own Noddle, who you may have also heard of. You can sign up to receive your credit report from all three of these credit reference agencies.

What s the difference between Experian, Equifax and CallCredit?

If you have been a victim of fraud, or you are applying for a high value credit product such as a mortgage, we would recommend checking your credit report with more than one of the credit reference agencies. This is because each one can hold slightly different information, so for your own peace of mind this may be worth doing.

Why do credit reference agencies exist?

All banks and financial institutions within the UK use one of these three credit reference agencies to decide whether to offer you credit or not. (Take a look at this handy, independent guide from the ICO for more information).

wiseGEEK: What is a Credit Rating?

A credit rating is a simple number which many lenders use to determine whether or not they will give a loan or line of credit to an individual. It is is impacted by a number of factors, some of which are controllable, others of which are not.

There are three main agencies lenders go to in order to acquire an individual’s credit rating: TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Many lenders get two or more reports, as details may differ among the agencies. Opinions differ as to which of the agencies is the best or most accurate, with factions holding strong opinions on both sides for all three of the major agencies.

The formula used by these three agencies is known as FICO, named after the Fair Isaac Credit Organization, one of the first companies to begin using credit ratings in the 1950s. A FICO score is a number ranging from 300 to 900, and roughly approximates the risk an individual poses to a lender. A rating of 300 is considered extremely high risk, while 900 indicates virtually no risk.

The FICO score is calculated based on the percentage of your total credit you are currently utilizing (approximately 30% of the FICO score), how long you have had lines of open credit (15%), the types of credit lines you have (10%), how large your past lines of credit have been (10%), and your number of delinquent payments (35%).

As a rule of thumb, a credit rating around 500 is high enough risk that many lenders will refuse a line of credit, and those that do grant one will penalize the borrower with high interest rates and difficult terms. A rating above 850 will grant the lowest possible interest rates and a very small down payment where applicable. One of over 650 is good enough to get favorable terms and virtually always be accepted for new lines of credit.

Many organizations offer online access to your credit rating. These sites offer reports from all three major agencies, detail why your score may be low, and offer suggestions for how to improve it. This ready access to credit information has led to the emergence of many online forums and communities in which members encourage and assist one another in raising their ratings.

“Free” credit report now costs $1

When is free not free?

When it’s on freecreditreport.com and costs a dollar.

In response to new rules from the Federal Trade Commission. freecreditreport.com, which is owned by the credit bureau Experian, has begun charging $1 for credit reports. The service says that the $1-per-report charge will be donated to charity.

But will the FTC buy it? The new promotion appears to sidestep new FTC rules that require companies that tout free reports to indicate that the only government-authorized site for free credit reports is AnnualCreditReport.com. As The New York Times noted today, by charging a dollar but not doing away with the word, free, Experian may just be seeing what it can get away with in the face of those rules.

At many such sites, free has never really been free. At freecreditreport.com, consumers who sign up actually are opting in to free trial periods for paid credit-monitoring services. Freecreditreport.com’s credit-monitoring service is $14.95 per month if you don’t cancel within 7 days.

As we’ve reported. you probably don’t need credit monitoring if you order the truly free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com. Ordering one report from each of the three credit bureaus every 4 months should give you enough information without the need for a credit monitoring service’s monthly fees.

Free Credit Report

A credit report is a history of your credit for the past six years. Any credit account you opened or have used for the past six years will be listed, including loans and mortgages, along with a detailed payment history, the amount originally loaned or the credit line, and the amount currently due. County court judgments (CCJs), bankruptcies, and foreclosures are also listed on your report.

Why should I access my free credit report?

There are two main reasons to access your free credit report:

  • Assure accuracy of your credit history

These days, it s more important than ever to be sure that your credit history accurately reflects your credit past. Not only are lenders concerned with your credit habits, but landlords and sometimes even employers are also accessing your credit report to see how you manage your finances. The last thing you want is for an error or inaccuracy to cause you to be denied a loan, turned down for a flat, or passed over for a job or promotion.

  • If you ve already been denied a loan, flat, or job, it s helpful to access your credit report to determine why. You may know that you have had problems with your credit in the past, but identifying the exact problems, plus seeing when those items will be removed from your report, will help you get back on your feet financially. Once you find out why you re being denied credit, you can start a plan of action. If it s getting very close to the negative items being removed from your account, which takes six years, you ll have a definitive date as to when you can start shopping for a loan without having to worry about that item. If you have recent negative items on your credit report, pinpointing the problem can help prevent it in the future. Are you frequently behind on payments? Do you miss payments? Use your credit report to help you make a budget that avoids getting behind in the future.

I thought there was a fee to check my credit report. How can I get a free credit report?

You can get a free credit report online from each of the credit reference agencies, Equifax, Experian, and Call Credit. It s a good idea to get a report from each of the agencies, so that you can compare the information to assure complete accuracy. Some information may differ, and you will need to contact the credit reference agencies to be sure that all three reports are as identical as possible.

    • Your name and address are taken directly from the electoral roll. If there is a problem with this information, you should contact the local authority where you registered for electoral roll. If the address differs only slightly from your actual address, be aware that the electoral roll address is the official one, and therefore may not be exactly as you wrote on your registration.
    • County court judgments (CCJs) mean that someone took you to court over an amount of money owed to them, and you have one month from the judgement date to pay the amount due. If you paid within the month, the CCJ will be removed from your credit report. If you paid within the month, but there is still a CCJ on your report, you will need to contact the credit reference agencies and send proof of payment.
    • Bankruptcies and foreclosures stay on your credit report for six years. If it has been more than six years since you filed bankruptcy or were foreclosed upon, contact the credit reference agencies with proof of the date.
    • Payment and balance information is listed for your credit accounts. When you look at your report, make sure that there are no high balances that you did not charge up, or payments marked as late or missed when you know you have consistently paid on time.
    • Compare all three credit reports side-by-side. Make sure the information from all three credit reference agencies is uniform. If you notice a discrepancy, contact the credit reference agency that is not accurately reflecting your credit history.

Free Credit Report without a Credit Card

Everyday, while surfing internet we come across the numerous advertisements which tell us that it is our right to get free credit reports. But is this possible? Yes, one can obtain a free credit report to have a look at his credit score or a financial background at no charge, without a credit card.

Actually if we try to find the answer to the above question, it will come as ‘no’ because every time you go to check your re-credit report, you will be hard pressed to look for a company that will be ready to do it. The most important reason behind it is a simple one. Credit card serves as a major tool in identification of an individual. It is used to verify your true identity. But don’t get disheartened.

There are ways to get your free credit report without actually possessing a credit card. You can write an application demanding your credit report to anyone of the credit reporting agencies with a proof of your identity attached along with. Your identity proof can be a copy of your driving license or a copy of your recent bill. You can also give a call to these credit reporting agencies to obtain your credit report.

    Credit Report

A credit report is a document depicting your financial status which becomes a very important tool to derive your specific credit score. The information regarding your financial transactions, loans, dates, bills is gathered and maintained by these credit reporting agencies. These records include the information about your bad loan history, delayed mode of re-payments, penalties slapped and your own credit liabilities. Thus, a credit report is a reflection of your financial position and the credit score indicates your reliability as a borrower for financial institutions and banks to decide whether you’re creditworthy or not.

A person having a better credit score like 700 or above can easily get loans or mortgages at much lower interest rates, unlike the persons suffering from bad credit score. As your credit report is a reflection of your financial status, it helps you to manage your resources in a much better way. Your credit score becomes a reference point and makes it much easier to plan your financial activities accordingly. Thus, in modern consumer based society, it serves as a guiding tool to ensure that you are not trading the path to bankruptcy.

There are only three credit reporting agencies to provide a credit report for any individual. Those are Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. Only these three major companies can track and report your credit history. On September 1, 2005 the Federal Trade Commission, the consumer protection agency of US has passed the law by which everyone in the US is now entitled to get a free copy of their credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies mentioned above in each single year.

As the official website of FTC says “annualcreditreport.com is the only authorized online source to get a free credit report under federal law. You can get your free report from each of the three companies every 12 months.” Although annualcreditreport.com is easily accessible, there is a small catch. From this site you can’t get access to your credit report more than once in a single year. So, if you want to check the report again within 12 months you have to switch over to other websites which claim to offer free reports but may charge you after a specific span if you do not cancel their offers within that free trial period.

There are few things which you can consider while getting free credit report.

    1. 1. Don’t try to get the credit reports from all three companies at a single time. This will allow you to space out your free credit reports thrice in a year over a regular time interval. Thus, you can see the changes that occur over time in a year.
    2. Check out for the correct spelling of your web address as there are many spam sites which slightly differ in their spelling from the original ones.
    3. Download your credit report immediately as you may not have access to it later.
    4. Quit your browser after getting your credit report, so no one else can have access to it. This will prevent the identity threat.

There are numerous websites offering you the opportunity to get your free credit report. The only obligation here is a normal 30 day three trial periods. So in case you use this facility then don’t forget their membership within the free trial period. Don’t give your credit card information or any such information which can become the cause for identity theft. As a credit report guides you in planning and managing your financial sources, avail this facility regularly!

How to get your FREE Credit Report

An amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, known as the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, established the free credit report program. The program requires the three national credit reporting companies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, to provide consumers, upon request, with a free copy of their credit report every 12 months.

The free reports are available only through the central site set up by the three major reporting agencies. To obtain the free reports, consumers can:

    • Call 1-877-322-8228
    • Order online at www.annualcreditreport.com (NOTE: Choose your state and then click the RED “Request Report” button.)
    • Complete the Annual Credit Report Request form, available at www.ftc.gov/credit and mail to Annual Credit Report Request Service, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

In order to receive the free report, consumers must use one of the above methods. If consumers contact the credit reporting companies directly they will still be charged for their credit reports. Consumer may order these reports from each of the reporting agencies at the same time, or stagger the requests throughout the year. Staggering the requests throughout the year would allow for a continual watch of the credit history and provide further protection from incidences of identity theft.

    Free Credit Reports

Consumers now have the right to order a free copy of their credit report thanks to a new federal law, known as the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act.

Under terms of this law the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, TransUnion and Experian, are each required to provide consumers, upon request, a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months from a centralized source. This comes as a welcome relief to the millions of Americans who have had to pay to review their credit reports in the past.

    • The credit reporting agencies have authorized annualcreditreport.com as the official site to distribute the free credit reports. The agencies have stressed that this is the only web site they have endorsed to distribute free annual reports.
    • annualcreditreport.com allows you to view and print one, two or all three of your free credit reports quickly via a secure Internet site.
    • You can also request the report by phone toll-free (877) 322-8228 or by mail: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
    • You’ll be able to order all three credit reports at one time, or at different times throughout the year. It’s your choice.
    • Be sure to order from the centralized agency, annualcreditreport.com. If you go directly to the individual credit reporting agencies, you will be charged unless you fit another criteria for a free report.

Visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website for more information on the Fair Credit Reporting Credit Act .

    Free credit report

Keeping an eye on your credit score and your credit report is easy these days. By federal law, every consumer is entitled to one free credit report from each of the credit reporting agencies annually. These annual free credit reports don’t give you your credit score, though. And what if you want to view your report each month to make sure there is no identity fraud or other problem? MyBankrate.com provides free credit scores and credit reports. Just sign up to check them every month.

On the credit report, you’ll see the status of accounts open in your name. Accounts closed in good standing continue to be listed on your report for 10 years. Charged-off accounts or accounts in collections will stay on your report for seven years. If there are problems with accounts that you don’t agree with, you will want to address those so that you can keep your credit report clean and improve your credit score.

Credit card companies and banks that lend money for mortgages and car loans use your credit score to decide whether to lend you money and at what interest rate. With a mediocre credit score instead of a good credit score, you could be paying hundreds of dollars more a month on a loan.

So where does this credit score come from? It’s derived from your credit report. Businesses that lend you money report your financial behavior to one or all of the credit reporting agencies Equifax, Experian or TransUnion each month. They note if you’ve paid on time, canceled an account, or paid of the loan, for example.

This information is translated into a three-digit number, which is your credit score. A VantageScore ranges between 300 (poor) and 850 (excellent).

There are six factors that contribute to your credit score:

    • Payment history
    • Age and type of credit
    • Percent of credit limit used
    • Total balances to debt ratio
    • Credit behavior
    • Available credit

How to dispute a credit report mistake

Mistakes on credit reports can range from an address where you’ve never lived to an account you have paid off but is listed as active, for example. You can dispute information on your credit report by contacting the creditor or the credit reporting agency. A phone call to the creditor pointing out the error may fix the mistake. If not, get your proof ready and write a letter to the creditor and the credit reporting agency explaining the error and request that they correct it.

You should dispute errors with one of the credit reporting agencies in order to get the full benefit of the protections offered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, or FCRA. The FCRA requires that disputes be sent to the business that provided the erroneous information and that the information be corrected or deleted from your credit report within 30 days.

    Repairing credit

Besides tidying up your credit report, adopting these good money management habits will help boost your credit score.

    • Pay on time. Even if you can’t pay your credit card balance in full, paying the required minimum payment on time will help your credit score.
    • Keep your balances low. Using less than 30 percent of your credit limit will help inch up the score.
    • Only ask for what you need. I f you’re applying for a lot of credit at the same time, you could look desperate for money, which is a red flag to lenders.
    • Nothing will improve your credit score faster than paying down debt.

    AnnualCreditReport.Com

FreeCreditReport.Com or AnnualCreditReport.Com and get 3 Free Credit Report whithout any charge from 3 Major Credit Report Bureaus in The US.

It s a good idea to check your credit reports once a year, to guard against identity theft.

The federal government even makes it easier, mandating that all consumers be allowed access to their credit reports from all three credit reporting agencies – Experian, TransUnion and Equifax – once a year.

The feds set up a special website for consumers to gain this access: www.annualcreditreport.com. That site – and only that site – provides the free access to credit reports. All others carry a fee or commitment.

Why, you might ask, didn t the feds use the .gov domain suffix, which woud have it made it crystal-clear that the consumer was on the right site?

Good question.  Maybe someone thought it would be cool to have a .com name. Free Credit Report.Com

Whatever the reason for the feds foolishness, Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is advising consumers to avoid companies that advertise free credit reports but require consumers to purchase products or services to access their annual credit report .

    Just use the official site

Even though consumers can get free credit reports through the government-mandated site, Masto says many companies claim to offer free credit reports – and some actually do.

However, consumers should know that other companies may give them a report only if they buy other products or services. Still others say they are providing consumers a “free” report and then bill consumers for services such as credit monitoring, that they have to cancel, sometimes within a 7-day trial membership to avoid any fees. Free Credit Report Com

Tammy, of Fox Lake, Ill. went for an offer like that.

“Well, we needed a FreeCreditReport to move so I thought I would just use the trial end membership last Sept 2011,” Tammy wrote in a post at ConsumerAffairs. “I called spoke with someone they said they would take care of it for me and send me an email. Well, I did not think of it much after until today when I started going through my bank statements. so I called them they said I never cancelled my husband s account. I did, but they are telling me I did not. I asked for a refund they gave me one month back but charged me since September.”

Asking for a credit card is red flag

Tammy would not have incurred that expense had she gone to the official site, which is completely free and requires no commitments of any kind. The tip-off for consumers is when a supposedly free service asks for a credit card number. Once you supply billing information, you can expect to get a bill.

“A cautious consumer is a smart consumer,” said Masto.

A federal government law requires commercial websites that advertise that they offer free credit reports to include a box letting consumers know they can get a free credit report at www.AnnualCreditReport.com or by calling 877-322-8228. This notice is designed to protect consumers from deceptive and misleading “free” credit report ads.

Official site provides all three reports

By visiting the official AnnualCreditReport.com web-site, consumers can ensure the reports they receive are free. Consumers have the option to request all three reports at once or to order one report at a time.

Federal state laws provide consumers with a variety of tools to help protect themselves against identity theft. Consumers who have a reasonable suspicion that they are or are about to become victims of identity theft can place free fraud alerts on their creditreport by contacting one of the US 3 major CreditReportBureaus.

Get more than your credit score:

    What is a credit score?

A credit score is a summary of your entire credit report information into one 3 digit number between 300 and 850. Credit reporting agencies use a complex mathematical calculation to determine this number by comparing your information to the patterns in thousands of past credit reports, scoring identifies. Your credit score provides a lender with a general idea of how likely and how often your are to repay your loan. The higher your score, the more likely you’ll be approved for a loan and often higher scores come with lower interest rates and better repayment options.

How is my credit score calculated?

There are many types of score factors that can have a positive or negative effect on your score. The factors are listed in order of the degree in which they affect your score negatively, meaning that the factor listed first is what has the most effect your score. Some of the factors that can negatively impact your score are:

    • Too many inquiries (how often you apply for credit)
    • Too many serious delinquencies (how timely your account payments are)
    • Too many recently opened accounts (new lines of credit you have opened recently)
    • Average balance of revolving accounts is too high (what you owe vs. what is available)
    • Too few mortgage accounts (what types of credit accounts you have)

    Who uses my credit score?

Your Credit scores are often used as one of the main tools creditors, employers, landlords, insurance and finance companies rely on to determine your creditworthiness. Your score is a quick snapshot that is often used when credit decisions are made quickly. Creditors may also obtain your full credit report, to access more detailed information to aide their decision on your level of risk.

How often is my credit report updated?

Typically your report is updated monthly, exact date varies by the different credit reporting agencies. For example agency A may send out info on the 10th of each month, while agency B sends their info out on the 1st.

However, the comparisons you get will never show you everything that you could get – only the products they have commercial relationships with. You re also not guaranteed acceptance for any credit product, and it’s worth noting that you’re not obliged to take-up any of these offers.

Remember: there is no legal right for you to have a credit card or borrow money – the final decision always comes from the provider.

Noddle can be a good tool for people who just want a glance at what report contains, so it depends on what you want to gain from accessing your credit report.

    It’s your report

Join the campaign to fight for free annual credit reports for everyone

You can also get a free credit report from Experian or Equifax, but this is a free trial, lasting 30 days. Once the trial is up you ll be charged in the region of £10-£15 per month, but there is no contract so you can cancel.

You may want to take out one of the so-called premium credit reports from Experian or Equifax if you re looking to manage your credit rating in the run up to a big credit application such as a mortgage.

Getting a free credit report from one of the premium credit reference agencies could be useful in the run-up to applying for a mortgage to check everything is in order

If you discover your rating is good enough within the free trial and you feel like you know how to continue managing it, then you may feel comfortable enough to cancel it before you get charged and go ahead with your credit applications.

On the other hand, if you feel like you need to make improvements, you can keep checking it to see if any actions you ve made recently have made a difference before you risk damaging your credit further by failing on a credit card application or mortgage.

If you re simply curious, then a free service like Noddle is great value, but it all comes down to what you hope to gain from seeing your credit report.

What is a statutory credit report?

A statutory credit report costs £2 from Experian, Callcredit and Equifax. For £2 each time you can view a current snapshot of your credit report and score online or you can ask for a written copy.

Something to consider, however, is that all three of the main credit reference agencies, Experian, Equifax and Callcredit, have credit information from different lenders. They re most likely to have roughly the same things but they still might differ on a few areas of your credit history.

As a result, you may wish to get a statutory credit report from all of the main providers so you can get a full overview of your credit score.

You can read another one of our guides to find out what kind of details you might see from an Experian credit report (as the leading credit reference agency) or use the table below to compare the market for credit reports.

    What affects my credit rating?

There are a range of factors that could make a lender, financial service provider or even energy supplier or mobile phone network reject your application.

Your credit rating is important, but there are other factors to consider. Firstly, there s the provider s minimum eligibility criteria.

It s a very simple one but many people still think that meeting most of the minimum eligibility criteria listed next to a credit product is enough to be accepted.

Make sure you read this information closely and take all of it as gospel. It also does not mean you will be accepted if you meet all of the minimum eligibility criteria.

This is where your credit rating is likely to play a pivotal role. Once you ve met the minimum eligibility criteria, the provider will do a credit check to find out a few things about you.

The main issues providers are looking for are signs that you may pose a risk of committing fraud, or less likely to pay your bills on time.

Now you may have no intention of doing either, but the information the provider has to work with is all on paper.

There is no personality involved. Your previous addresses and employment history are considered, as well as your financial repayment history.

If you ve moved from address to address on a regular basis or been out of work for regular periods of time, your chances of being accepted for a credit application will be limited because lenders will see it as a lack of stability and thus assume that you could be a fraud risk.

Similarly, if you ve missed repayments, that suggests to credit providers that you cannot be trusted to pay your bills on time.

If you are looking for credit products that you could be accepted for then a credit report can be a useful first port of call.

For those with bad credit, you can start off small with a credit builder credit card. which are often provided by lenders who are more likely to overlook some marks on your credit file.

    FreeCreditScore.com

A subsidiary of Experian, FreeCreditScore.com is marketed heavily online as well as offline with both television and radio ads (it’s the successor to Experian’s FreeCreditReport.com). When you enroll with FreeCreditReport.com for their free seven-day trial, you get a free Experian credit score. After the trial ends, FreeCreditScore.com gives you two Experian scores per month, and the cost per month is $17.99. This service is really pricey for only monitoring your Experian credit report, while other credit report monitoring services provide you with credit reports and scores from all three bureaus at a lower monthly price. We recommend monitoring your credit report at all three bureaus because lenders often only report to a single bureau. For example, you might have information on your TransUnion credit file that will not show up on your Experian credit file. Thus, we don’t highly recommend this service for most people.

Even the signup was shaky with this service. When entering personal information like your social security into a website, the browser you are using should indicate whether the webpage is secure or not. In our Google Chrome address bar, the usual color change that indicates security, which we’ve seen with the other credit monitoring services we review, had a different indicator. While the webpage was encrypted, using HTTPS instead of HTTP, it stated, “. this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look of the page.” This is usually a red flag and you should think twice before entering your information.

    FreeCreditScore.com Sign Up Security

For the sake of the review, we proceeded anyway. After entering our payment information and social security number, however, we were redirected to an error page. Obviously this is troubling when you have already entered your credit card, so we called their customer support to confirm that we will not be charged more on customer support later in this review. Eventually, we were able to reapply for a membership and were able to see an Experian credit score immediately.

    Credit Monitoring, Reports and Scores

FreeCreditScore.com constantly monitors your Experian credit report and you will receive an e-mail alert whenever there is a change or inquiry to your credit. In addition to updating your Experian credit score twice per month, FreeCreditScore.com gives you access to their Score Center, which does a nice job tracking your credit score over time as well as educating you on why it changes and how you can improve it. Their score estimator is a useful tool that tells you how your score would change based on different actions you might take such as paying down a credit balance.

The largest downside to this service is that the credit monitoring and scores are for Experian only. Also, the free credit score uses the Experian scoring system, which is slightly different than the FICO score used by most lenders when making credit decisions, although the two scores are usually very close.

    Identity Theft Protection and Tools

Should you discover an identity theft problem, Experian has a nice added feature in that they assign a fraud resolution specialist to your account to help you fix the problem. They also provide more identity theft insurance than some other monitoring services ($50,000), although in general we don’t think this type of insurance is really that valuable. Because they do not monitor all three bureaus, FreeCreditScore.com isn’t a good service if you are looking for comprehensive identity theft protection. For example, if an identity thief tries opening an account with your personal information but the particular lender only reports to TransUnion, FreeCreditScore.com will not alert you of a change in your TransUnion credit file because they do not monitor it, and this can be detrimental.

    Customer Support

When we called to resolve our signup issues, the customer service representative picked up quickly and was helpful, He assured us that we would not be charged for the signup that ended in error. You can email them or reach their call center Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. They also have a basic resource section where you can find articles about credit.

Free Credit Score From Equifax Limited Time Only

Update: The free Equifax credit score offer has expired. You can still get a free credit score through Credit Karma. Credit Sesame, or from a trial offer from many different credit monitoring services.

Ever wonder what your credit score is? Well you can find out you free credit score right now for a limited time. Earlier this week I received an e-mail from the Director of Public Relations at Equifax. one of the three main consumer reporting agencies in the US. These companies report credit scores to potential lenders, but Equifax is the only consumer reporting agency of the three nationwide Credit Reporting Agencies that provides the FICO credit score to consumers. In the e-mail, Equifax let me know about their current promotion which starts today.

Get your free FICO credit score from Equifax

Equifax is doing a free marketing test which they are only promoting online via blogs. There will be no print, radio or TV promotional campaign to spread the word.

Starting today, Equifax is running a limited test campaign where consumers can get their FICO credit score free of charge — no obligation, no strings attached. Consumers don t need to buy anything or even register a credit card!

This free trial is limited to the first 10,000 people.

How to get your free credit score

Equifax was kind enough to provide me the url to share with my readers, and they also told me I could try it out before the launch date, which I did. The process was extremely easy, didn t cost me anything, and I had my credit score in about 5 minutes.

Click here to get your free credit score!

Once you hit the landing page, click the orange button in the middle, and fill out the required information. You will need to provide your personal information: name, address, Social Security Number, DOB, favorite color, etc. After you fill out your private information, you will need to click on the terms of agreement box and answer two security questions and your score pops up. It s that easy.

Two things to look out for: This is free, but there are several opportunities to pay for other credit reporting options. You do not need to do this to get your free score. There is also an opt out check box if you do not want your e-mail address shared with Equifax s partners (I always opt out to keep my inbox clean).

    What was my credit score?

    Take a look for yourself.

As you can see, I only have one factor hurting my score, which is a new credit account. I recently opened a new Discover Business Credit Card for my business (even though I have an EIN for my business, the business credit card application still required my SSN).

About FICO credit scores: FICO scores have a range from 300 to 850 and the higher, the better. 795 is definitely a high credit score, but I think good credit is a financial asset and high credit scores are becoming more valuable due to the credit crunch. Being proactive and increasing your credit score will give you financial flexibility in the future. I shouldn t need to apply for credit any time soon, so I have plenty of time to improve my credit score .

Free Credit Score from Government Site

Free Credit Score from Government Site

The average person knows that their credit rating is of vital importance in every aspect of his or her life, but there is still some amount of confusion as to the difference between a credit report and a credit score. There is a government site set up for getting your free annual credit report from each of the three reporting agencies, TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, but can you get a free credit score from government site?

The Difference between a Credit Score and a Credit Report

A credit report that you can get for free at the government site annualcreditreport.com contains your credit history. This report contains four categories which include identifying information, credit information, public records information and finally, recent inquiries made on your credit report. This is the document to review in order to see that everything is accurate and that there are no errors or fraudulent entries. This is also the information used to calculate your credit score.

Your Annual Credit Report is 100% Free

According to The Fair Credit Reporting Act, each and every consumer in the United States is entitled to a free credit report once each year from the three reporting agencies mentioned above. This report must be provided absolutely free upon request. First you must confirm your identity and they you can either access your report online or you can order it through the mail or on the telephone. Also, if you are denied credit throughout the year, you can request a copy from the reporting agency that provided the report upon which the credit decision was made. Both your free annual credit report and a copy of the ‘offending’ report are yours by law upon request.

Is There Any Such Thing as a Free Credit Score From Government Site?

If you go to the site in question, annualcreditreport.com and browse through their FAQs, you will see that you are not entitled to your credit score for free. According to their site, you are given an opportunity to purchase your credit score from each of the three reporting agencies once you have obtained your free credit report. Also, each of those agencies uses different data and calculations to come up with a credit score so you may need to buy one from all three agencies. So what then is a credit score and how does it differ from a credit report.

How Is Your Credit Score Calculated?

For the three major agencies using your FICO (Fair Isaac Corporation) credit score, there are five areas used to ‘grade’ your creditworthiness and those areas include payment history (35%), amounts owed (30%), length of credit history (15%), new credit (10%) and types of credit (10%). However, there are different complex mathematical equations used and each agency has its own set of calculations which can vary to some degree. The only common denominator is that you are not given the right to request a free credit score each year, you are only given the legal right to request your credit report so that you can see what information it contains in order to contest it if there is a mistake or a fraudulent entry.

The next time you hear someone saying that you can get free credit score from government website, they are either mistaken or deliberately trying to mislead you. The only thing you can get from the government site for free is your annual credit report which you can also get from a trustworthy credit monitoring service which will also provide updated credit scores throughout the year.
