Credit report and score

Updated August 2017

Checking your credit report is in good shape is important if you want to get a mortgage, credit card, loan and more. The big credit reference agencies try to lure you in with free month-long trials, but as you can now see all your credit reports for free, there’s no need to pay at all.

This guide explains how you can check your credit reports for free or even how to get paid to check them. Plus, we’ve launched our revolutionary free MoneySavingExpert.com Credit Club which allows you to check your Experian Credit Report for free.

In this guide.

Why you should check and what you should check

There are three credit reference agencies, Equifax, Experian and CallCredit, and they all hold information on you which lenders use. Even small errors can cause problems, so it’s important you check through your credit report. Most of this is explained in detail in our How to Boost Your Credit Rating guide, but below is a quick checklist.

3. If you no longer have joint accounts with someone, ensure you financially delink (ie, separate).

4. Always check your credit reports after rejection. Read why here.

5. Cancel unused credit and store cards. Find out why unused cards can count against you.

Should I check all three credit reports?

If you’re doing a specific application for a company and you know which credit reference agency it uses, it’s obviously a priority to check that one. But as a general housekeeping rule we suggest you check all three credit reports at least once a year, because they all have an impact.

Don’t worry about over-checking your credit report. It’s not recorded on it, and it’s something that only you and the credit reference agency will know about. Check EVERY detail and do it regularly. PLUS always check before making any big applications to minimise your risk of rejection. It can all be done online, it’s quick and easy.

However, if time is short and you can only use one, then choose Experian (the biggest) or CheckMyFile (checks Equifax and Callcredit). It’s a good idea to do a check-up roughly every 12 to 18 months. Always do one in good time before making any important applications.

Your right to check your file (costs Ј2)

The most important thing to tell you is that you have a legal right to check your credit report. This is because it’s important you know the information that companies have on you. Here’s how to check, however before you read it please see our information on how to check for free and how to get paid to do it.

The checks are all done online so they’re quick and easy to do (and are much more efficient than the old mail-only method).

The statutory report contains your personal details, info on financial links to other people, whether you’re on the electoral roll, the credit accounts you have, any missed payments or defaults, and a list of other recent searches of your credit report (though these only stay on your file for a maximum of one year). All three credit reference agencies will provide you with a statutory report:

How to check your full credit report for FREE

Credit report and score

Credit reference agencies used to make all their money from selling data to lenders. The idea was to help lenders predict your behaviour, which allowed them to assess whether or not you were a good person to lend to.

Then some bright spark at the credit reference agencies realised they could generate a business called “consumer credit management”. It meant they could start to sell you monitoring products and all the other sorts of data, including your “credit score”, for the first time. You may ask why they sell it to you? Well, it makes them money, and sometimes up to Ј180 a year.

It used to be that the only way you could check your score for free was to sign up to 30-day free trials of these services, and then cancel before the time’s up so you don’t get charged. Yet, now, you can check your report on all three agencies for free every month – though they’ll make money if you apply for credit cards and loans through them.

Which way you choose to check your report will depend on what’s most important to you – a full monitoring service free for 30 days, or a more basic, but free-for-life service. Here’s how to do it, broken down by agency.

Did you know that your credit scores could end up saving you hundreds or even thousands of dollars? A credit score is one of the most important components of a consumer s financial profile. In much the same way that a resume displays your work experience to a prospective employer, a credit report provides prospective creditors (and in some cases employers and insurers too) with a detailed picture of your credit history. And like a resume, your credit report can influence whether you will receive what you are applying for.

Inaccuracies Mixed Credit Files

Many inaccuracies on a credit report can be the result of simple human error, and are therefore are not difficult to have corrected. Whether the inaccuracies relate to payments not credited, late payments, or data mixed in from the credit file of someone else with a name similar to yours, you will want to bring the inaccurate information to the attention of the credit bureau promptly.

Identity theft is an insidious crime, involving a thief who assumes your name to open new accounts, divert your card statements to another address, and run up all sorts of bad debt without you ever knowing about it until collectors come calling. Over time, identity theft could jeopardize your ability to obtain further credit. The best way to catch a thief who is using your name is by getting a copies of your free reports, which will show you if there are accounts listed you know you have not opened. For example, if a thief has intercepted a pre-approved credit card offer in your name and sent it in with a change of address, your credit report will include the account. Your free annual credit report com is available by clicking on the link below.

What Our Members Say:

If you are shopping around for a loan or more credit, you should know that when creditors check your credit, it places an inquiry on your credit report. Inquiries can add up, which is often interpreted as a negative by creditors. For this reason, too many inquiries can actually make getting credit more difficult. Moreover, if you did not authorize someone to look at your credit report and they did, they may have broken the law. It is easy to get your free annual credit report com by clicking on the button at the bottom of this page.

Though consumers are protected financially from this abuse, other creditors may take note of all this activity and decide to raise your interest rates or refuse to grant you a loan. Reviewing your reports will help you catch new activity on accounts that you have not been using, or may have closed or sent to consumerinfo.

Financial Crisis Was Avoidable, Inquiry Concludes

    Credit report government

    January 25, 2011

WASHINGTON — The 2008 financial crisis was an “avoidable” disaster caused by widespread failures in government regulation, corporate mismanagement and heedless risk-taking by Wall Street, according to the conclusions of a federal inquiry.

The commission that investigated the crisis casts a wide net of blame, faulting two administrations, the Federal Reserve and other regulators for permitting a calamitous concoction: shoddy mortgage lending, the excessive packaging and sale of loans to investors and risky bets on securities backed by the loans.

“The greatest tragedy would be to accept the refrain that no one could have seen this coming and thus nothing could have been done,” the panel wrote in the report’s conclusions, which were read by The New York Times . “If we accept this notion, it will happen again.”

While the panel, the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission , accuses several financial institutions of greed, ineptitude or both, some of its gravest conclusions concern government failings, with embarrassing implications for both parties. But the panel was itself divided along partisan lines, which could blunt the impact of its findings.

Many of the conclusions have been widely described, but the synthesis of interviews, documents and testimony, along with its government imprimatur, give the report — to be released on Thursday as a 576-page book — a conclusive sweep and authority.

The commission held 19 days of hearings and interviews with more than 700 witnesses; it has pledged to release a trove of transcripts and other raw material online.

Of the 10 commission members, the six appointed by Democrats endorsed the final report. Three Republican members have prepared a dissent focusing on a narrower set of causes; a fourth Republican, Peter J. Wallison, has his own dissent, calling policies to promote homeownership the major culprit. The panel was hobbled repeatedly by internal divisions and staff turnover.

The majority report finds fault with two Fed chairmen:

, who led the central bank as the housing bubble expanded, and his successor,

, who did not foresee the crisis but played a crucial role in the response. It criticizes Mr. Greenspan for advocating deregulation and cites a “pivotal failure to stem the flow of toxic mortgages” under his leadership as a “prime example” of negligence.

It also criticizes the Bush administration’s “inconsistent response” to the crisis — allowing Lehman Brothers to collapse in September 2008 after earlier bailing out another bank, Bear Stearns , with Fed help — as having “added to the uncertainty and panic in the financial markets.”

Like Mr. Bernanke, Mr. Bush’s Treasury secretary,

    Henry M. Paulson Jr.

, predicted in 2007 — wrongly, it turned out — that the subprime collapse would be contained, the report notes.

Democrats also come under fire. The decision in 2000 to shield the exotic financial instruments known as over-the-counter derivatives from regulation, made during the last year of President

’s term, is called “a key turning point in the march toward the financial crisis.”

    Timothy F. Geithner

, who was president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York during the crisis and is now the Treasury secretary, was not unscathed; the report finds that the New York Fed missed signs of trouble at Citigroup and Lehman, though it did not have the main responsibility for overseeing them.

Former and current officials named in the report, as well as financial institutions, declined Tuesday to comment before the report was released.

The report could reignite debate over the influence of Wall Street; it says regulators “lacked the political will” to scrutinize and hold accountable the institutions they were supposed to oversee. The financial industry spent $2.7 billion on lobbying from 1999 to 2008, while individuals and committees affiliated with it made more than $1 billion in campaign contributions.

The report does knock down — at least partly — several early theories for the financial crisis. It says the low interest rates brought about by the Fed after the 2001 recession ; Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac , the mortgage finance giants; and the “aggressive homeownership goals” set by the government as part of a “philosophy of opportunity” were not major culprits.

On the other hand, the report is harsh on regulators. It finds that the Securities and Exchange Commission failed to require big banks to hold more capital to cushion potential losses and halt risky practices, and that the Fed “neglected its mission.”

It says the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency , which regulates some banks, and the Office of Thrift Supervision, which oversees savings and loans , blocked states from curbing abuses because they were “caught up in turf wars.”

“The crisis was the result of human action and inaction, not of Mother Nature or computer models gone haywire,” the report states. “The captains of finance and the public stewards of our financial system ignored warnings and failed to question, understand and manage evolving risks within a system essential to the well-being of the American public. Theirs was a big miss, not a stumble.”

The report’s implications may be felt more in the political realm than in public policy. The Dodd-Frank law overhauling the regulation of Wall Street, signed in July, took as its premise the same regulatory deficiencies cited by the commission. But the report is sure to be a factor in the debate over the future of Fannie and Freddie, which have been run by the government since 2008.

Though the report documents questionable practices by mortgage lenders and careless betting by banks, one striking finding is its portrayal of incompetence.

It quotes Citigroup executives conceding that they paid little attention to mortgage-related risks. Executives at the American International Group were found to have been blind to its $79 billion exposure to credit-default swaps , a kind of insurance that was sold to investors seeking protection against a drop in the value of securities backed by home loans. At Merrill Lynch , managers were surprised when seemingly secure mortgage investments suddenly suffered huge losses.

By one measure, for about every $40 in assets, the nation’s five largest investment banks had only $1 in capital to cover losses, meaning that a 3 percent drop in asset values could have wiped out the firm. The banks hid their excessive leverage using derivatives, off-balance-sheet entities and other devices, the report found. The speculative binge was abetted by a giant “shadow banking system” in which the banks relied heavily on short-term debt.

“When the housing and mortgage markets cratered, the lack of transparency, the extraordinary debt loads, the short-term loans and the risky assets all came home to roost,” the report found. “What resulted was panic. We had reaped what we had sown.”

The report, which was heavily shaped by the commission’s chairman, Phil Angelides, is dotted with literary flourishes. It calls credit -rating agencies “cogs in the wheel of financial destruction.” Paraphrasing Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” it states, “The fault lies not in the stars, but in us.”

Of the banks that bought, created, packaged and sold trillions of dollars in mortgage-related securities, it says: “Like Icarus, they never feared flying ever closer to the sun.”

    Whats my credit score

The credit reporting agency Experian announced on Monday that users can now ask Amazon s voice-activated assistant to answer credit-related questions.

Want to know your credit score? Just ask Alexa.

The credit reporting agency Experian announced on Monday that users can now ask Amazon s voice-activated assistant to answer credit-related questions. With the new Experian skill, Alexa can tell users about their credit score and utilization, offer advice and for those who have access to Experian s credit lock product check whether their credit is locked, or lock it.

To take advantage of the new product, customers first need to enable Alexa s Experian skill. Then, they have to enter their Experian username and password, plus a personal key created when users enter their information in order to link up their account. Users will have to repeat their pin after five minutes of inactivity.

The new service might ring some alarm bells in light of the Equifax security breach, which exposed the personal information of up to 145.5 million people.

But Jeremy Wasser, Experian s Chief Product Architect, noted that security is a priority for Experian.

Creating the personal key adds an additional layer of security for voice services similar to other financial skills in the Alexa ecosystem, said Wasser. Data between Experian and Alexa are protected via strong encryption methods that meet or exceed multiple industry and federal standards and guidelines.

We also remind users that the information may be private and one may want to limit those within earshot when using the skill, he added.

An Amazon spokesperson explained that when customers choose to use a skill that requires account linking, like the Experian skill, account credentials and information stay with the skill developer and are linked to an Alexa user using an access token.

John Shier, a senior security expert at Sophos, said that he is not aware of any Alexa vulnerabilities, but that accessing sensitive information through a new device potentially increases risk of a hack.

All software contains vulnerabilities, he said. Introducing yet another device can introduce new vulnerabilities into your environment.

The move is designed to appeal to Millennials, Experian explained in a statement.

Having Experian data available for members via Alexa makes credit information accessible and approachable to America s largest generation, Experian said, adding that it found that 61% of Millennials check their credit report less than four times a year.

Guy Abramo, president of consumer business at Experian, added that the new feature could help make checking credit a part of people s daily routine. Consumers use Alexa daily to check the weather, manage bank accounts, play music and more, he said.

It s natural to incorporate another important element credit services into what has become a popular, personal assistant device.

What is the best credit card

When looking to get a credit card, there are a variety of things you should consider. If you want a rewards card to use frequently, you might not mind paying a $100 or $200 annual fee. You should also consider the regular APR (as opposed to the introductory rate) and the interest rate. A good interest rate is dependent on how you will use the card. For example, a 20% interest rate is fine if you plan on paying off the balance every month.

It pays to ask these kinds of questions before you fill out the application form. Here are 9 questions you want answered before you sign on the dotted line.

The “very first question” the consumer should ask is, “Why am I applying for this card? Why do I need this card?” says Bruce McClary, media director for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions, a nonprofit affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling

Some positive reasons: The card has low or no fees, a lower interest rate or offers a rewards program that suits your spending habits. “It has to make sense, and it has to fit into your overall lifestyle,” McClary says.

Do you pay off your credit card balances every month? If so, “you don’t care what the interest rate is because you won’t pay any,” says Ric Edelman, author of “The Truth About Money.” “But you care about the (annual) fee,” he says.

If you run a balance, you want the lowest rate you can get, even if that comes with an annual fee.

One clue to your usage: “Look at your past history,” says Edelman. “Because what you’ve done before is what you will be doing.”

If you’re shopping for a card, chances are you’re comparing card terms. But if an issuer sends you an offer, it’s tempting to apply and see what you get.

“It’s really difficult to pick one (in isolation),” says Kelly Rogers, chief development officer for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County and adjunct faculty at Chapman University. “If someone just shows you one car, how do you know if it’s the right car for you?”

Her advice: Do a side-by-side comparison of several different cards before you apply.

Don’t be afraid to plug the card name, “complaints” and “customer service” into your favorite search engine. “I go through and see who has the least amount of complaints and issues,” says Rogers.

Some cards will give you a range of rates you could get, but often that window is pretty wide, says Nick Bourke, director of the Safe Credit Card Project at The Pew Charitable Trusts. Other cards may offer a specific rate (or terms) and either approve or reject you.

If you’re operating totally in the dark, you have another option: Apply by phone and push for an answer on your rate and credit line before the account is opened.

While there are no guarantees, sometimes you can get an answer, says Bourke.

“I’ve actually done this myself,” he says, admitting “you do have to go pretty far in the process.”

You may have to ask for the department that’s actually evaluating your application to get an answer, he says.

“The thing that you want to do is when you’re talking to the person on the phone taking your application is you want to push them as hard as you can to get your APR and credit line,” Bourke says. Then, once you have the information and before the account is opened in your name, “you can say yes or no at that point,” he says.

According to the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, if a card offers a lower interest rate during an introductory period, the promotional rate has to last at least six months. While that introductory offer may be appealing, the regular rate is what you’re really buying.

So find out when the introductory APR expires and what the new rate will be. You can find this information online in the terms and conditions for the card or you can ask a service representative.

Another smart question: How long is that grace period? “Some cards start charging interest immediately,” says Edelman. A card can have different grace periods for balance transfers and cash advances than it does for purchases.

You can find information about the grace period in the credit card offer, thanks to federal rules that took effect in 2010. Look for a summary table of rate and fee disclosures, which will include a statement that explains how to avoid paying interest.

If you’re getting the card for points or rewards, this is one you definitely need to ask, says Josh Frank, senior researcher with the Center for Responsible Lending. Some issuers will revoke rewards if you’re late with a payment by even one day, he says.

“A lot of times, the answer they will give you is that they can take away or reduce your rewards for any reason,” he says. While that’s true, the issuer will have a policy on revoking or reducing points, and that’s what you want to ask about, he says. Under what specific circumstances would they reduce or eliminate a customer’s points?

In most cases, “this is one the customer service agent should know the answer to,” he says.

Some card issuers use your purchase records to assess your ongoing creditworthiness.

That means if you suddenly use your card to purchase retread tires, pay for a session with a marriage counselor or make a purchase at a market on a sketchy side of town, you could see your APR climb or your credit limit fall, says Frank. If you see this practice as an invasion of privacy, ask beforehand if the issuer does this, he says.

How to phrase it: Can my transactions ever be used in rating my credit risk?

And that’s one question the customer service representative “might not know the answer to,” says Frank. “You might want to ask them to transfer you to the credit department manager.”

If you are guaranteeing a card account by co-signing for a college student, ask if you will be on the hook for the debt after the other party turns 21, says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney for the National Consumer Law Center.

Many times, “there is nothing to prevent the issuers from saying you’re going to be guaranteeing this card 15 years from now — long after junior is out of college,” she says.

In addition, find out exactly what has to be done to get you off the account. Are you free to complete those steps yourself? Or will you need the cooperation of someone who might not want you — and those charging privileges — to go away?

Federal regulations limit your liability for unauthorized credit card charges to $50 if you report it within two business days. The longer you wait, the more you may lose. Many issuers cap losses at zero dollars, provided you follow a few rules. So find out how the card would handle charges you didn’t make, says McClary.

Also, does the issuer monitor usage and shut down the card if it sees out-of-the-ordinary charges or spending locations? That feature can be great if you always use the card for the same types of purchases in the same geographic area, but cumbersome if you’re getting the card for travel.

While it sounds counterproductive, you want to ask some detailed questions on how the issuer will treat you if you run into financial problems, says McClary.

Will you lose points or benefits? Will you be hit with late fees or a penalty rate? Ask what those penalties are or look online at the terms and conditions for the card.

Some issuers have programs to slash interest temporarily for customers who get behind, he says. Others don’t. So find out ahead of time what kind of programs the issuer offers that will help you rehabilitate your account and restore your original terms, McClary says.

Ask about the “worst case scenario,” he says. “When do they consider an account to be charged off? And when do they send an account to a collection agency?”

“It may be a little tough to get a hold of that information because it might not be readily available at the customer service level,” says McClary. “You may have to punch it up a level.”

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Once your bankruptcy is resolved you will want to rebuild your credit. There are many possible ways to rebuild your credit and one of them is a secured credit card. The cards’ activity is usually reported to the major credit bureaus monthly and this reported credit activity is the core of your credit score. To get a secured credit card you will need to put down at least a minimum security deposit. The minimum deposit will get you access to the minimum credit line, which is enough to show some positive credit activity. When use a secured credit card (and any credit card), you should make all due payments on time. Try to pay more than just a minimum – keeping balances low is also important.

Having bad credit is even worse than having no credit at all because you already lost your credibility. However, it doesn’t mean you will never get approved for a credit card gain. Working hard you will be able to gain your credibility back. To start with, we would recommend you to check your credit reports. Get a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). Look for any inaccuracies or outdated information. If you see errors, dispute them with credit bureaus. If you see credit inquiries from companies you do not recognize, dispute them as well. Once your report is clear and updated, you can apply for a credit card. A secured credit card is the best option for people with bad credit because secured card are created for people with bad credit. The cards are usually reported to all three major credit bureaus allowing you to improve your credit.

There are different credit card offers for people with bad credit and which one is the best depends on a person’s financial situation, credit score, and preferences. One card can be good for one person but the same card may not be as good for you. So we recommend you to consider everything from fees to interest rates when you choose a credit card. Another thing you may want to get with the credit card is the ability to track your credit score for free. Today many major banks and credit card issuers give access to credit score trackers for free. The score trackers will help you understand what is good and what is bad for your credit score, so you will be able to improve your credit faster.

Today there are credit card issuers that offer secured and unsecured credit cards to people with bad credit. Depending on how bad your credit is you can qualify for a secured or for an unsecured credit card. However, it is easier to get approved for a secured credit card because it requires a security deposit. The security deposit acts as a guarantee of your promise to pay and if you default on a secured credit card, the creditor will use your security deposit. Before you apply for a credit card, make sure your credit reports are correct and do not have outdated or erroneous information.

UK Credit Cards For Those With Bad Credit, unsecured credit cards for bad credit.#Unsecured #credit #cards #for #bad #credit

UK Credit Cards For Those With Bad Credit

Do You Need A UK MasterCard / Visa Credit Card? Do You Have Bad Credit?

There are three possibilities for those with some form of bad credit:

    (1) Unsecured Cards

    (1) Unsecured (Bad Credit History) Cards

Some credit card issuers offer unsecured cards to people who have had previous credit

problems. These Visa or MasterCard credit cards are only issued after the card issuer

has done a check on your credit history by looking at your credit report. These cards

aren’t guaranteed but are your best hope if your credit history is limited or impaired.

If you have some form of bad credit history and it is quite old, say at least 18 months,

then you could consider applying to these credit card issuers.

Credit limits for these cards will normally be low and the interest rate high (usually 25%),

as the card issuer is taking a greater risk than usual. However, these unsecured credit cards

will help you to build your empty or rebuild your poor credit history.

We have put together what is probably the most comprehensive list of unsecured

credit cards in the UK that are available to those with some form of bad credit history.

The UK Adverse Credit Unsecured Visa MasterCard Credit Card List:

(card information last checked updated 22nd April 2014)

This UK Visa credit card comes with an initial credit limit from Ј150 to Ј1000. There is the possibility of a credit limit increase on your fourth statement and further increases every four months up to Ј3000. There are no annual or monthly fees for this card.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

Purchase annual interest rate 59.94% (variable)

    Amount of credit Ј1000

    Representative 59.9% APR (variable).

This Visa credit card is designed for those with a less than perfect credit history.

There is a monthly fee of Ј15 for each Ј100 borrowed or part thereof. There is also a Ј3.50 monthly fee if the balance is Ј0.00. i.e. if card is unused.

You must also repay a minimum of 10% of your outstanding balance each month.

The initial credit limit, if successful with the application, is Ј300.

You must also have a debit card to apply for this card as the debit card will be used to make the monthly repayments.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

If you spent Ј300 on a purchase

transaction at the start of your agreement, incurred total monthly charges of Ј540 over a period of 20 months and made repayments in accordance with your Terms Conditions, your APR would be 627% APR representative (variable).

    Granite Visa Credit Card

This card is from Vanquis Bank and is essentially the same as their standard Visa card below but with a slightly lower advertised APR of 34.9%.

    Not available at present.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

You may not have heard of the Vanquis credit card.

The parent company is the International financial

group, Provident Financial. They have helped over 1 million people in the UK.

The APRs for the Vanquis Visa credit cards go up to 39.9%.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

Purchase annual interest rate 39.94% (variable).

    Amount of credit Ј1000.

    Representative 39.9% APR (variable)

The e-Platinum Plus card is the shopping card you have been waiting for. With guaranteed approval and a credit line of up to Ј2500, you’ll be able to buy the things you want AND the things you need. There is no credit check, your credit line can be increased upon request and we report to a major credit reference agency. All adverse credit is welcome.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

This credit card from Vanquis is designed to improve your credit rating. The initial credit limit can be up to Ј1000 which can be potentially increased to Ј3000 with the limit being increased every 4 months provided you run your account responsibly. The credit limit increase is not guaranteed and depends on a number of factors. The card can be managed online or by SMS.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

    Representative 29.8% APR (variable)

Capital One are the biggest providers of unsecured credit cards in the UK for those a bad credit and / or those who wish to build or rebuild their credit history. Credit limits for these credit cards start at Ј200 but provided you use your card regularly and keep within your limit then this can be increased. What’s important, though, is that they report your, hopefully, good credit history to the credit reference agencies (both Experian and Equifax) on a monthly basis. We definitely know of one client who used this credit card to build an empty (though clean) credit history from scratch. You need the Capital One Classic Card.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

    34.9% APR representative variable

    34.94% p.a. variable on purchase

    Ј1,200 credit limit

Barclaycard are one of the major issuers of credit

cards in the UK. Their Initial Visa card is designed

for those who want their first credit card but have

no credit history. It has a relatively high APR of

29.9% with a minimum credit limit of Ј250.

Unsecured credit cards for bad credit

    Representative 29.9% APR (variable)

There are now very few card issuers that offer cards aimed specifically at those with little or bad credit histories. A tough economic climate and general consolidation have combined to reduce the number to just a handful.

Cards aimed at this market which have disappeared within the last decade include those from Accucard Morethan, Beneficial, Monument (formerly Providian), Citicards (formerly the Associates) and the Universa MasterCard (Style Financial Services).

All Egg credit cards have now moved to Barclaycard. We had several reports of Egg cards being issued to those with no credit history and also cards being granted after the initial application was declined, but on appeal (usually by phone) the vast majority of times they overturned their decision and give you a credit card, albeit with a lower credit limit. It would make sense that Barclaycard would be interested in this market sector.

We also had reports of people receiving many of these bad credit history cards without actually being on the electoral register but simply being able to prove their identity.

In the past MBNA credit cards were an interesting case. Though not specifically credit cards for those with a poor credit history, we had reports of people obtaining these cards with high limits with very little positive credit history. There were also reports of people obtaining credit cards from them on a purely spurious basis, even if their card application was unsuitable (poor history / low credit score). This was some time ago, though. Things have probably changed.

Secured credit cards look and work just like any other credit cards. The only difference

is that before a card issuer will give you one you must pay them a security deposit

upfront. This deposit protects them should you fail to make repayments. It is only

returned after any balance is settled and the card account closed. The credit limit

on the card is set as a proportion of the secured funds, sometimes even up to 100%

    of the total amount surrendered.

In the US there are literally dozens of secured credit cards. However, the fees and charges

for these secured cards can be astronomical. Unfortunately, as these cards require you to

have a US address plus US Social Security number then they are not available to UK

There are no longer any secured cards issued by a UK card issuer (Capital One used to do

one) but there are some offshore / European secured options for UK and International

customers. Take a look at our secured credit card page where you will find some of the

secured cards that are available to such people.

If none of the above adverse credit history UK unsecured credit cards are available to you

and you’re unwilling or unable to provide a security deposit to an offshore or non-UK bank

but you still need a MasterCard or Visa card account then the only solutions open to you

are prepaid credit cards and the Visa cards that now come with some bank accounts.

These card accounts are specifically designed for those who have bad credit and / or

cannot get (or do not want) a Visa or MasterCard card account from anywhere else or

who need a low risk Internet or private second credit card account. See our prepaid card

page for details about this type of prepaid debit card in the UK plus a list of some of the

prepaid card accounts that are available to those in the UK, Europe and Internationally.

Canadians can now choose from a host of different types of credit cards to help them establish, re-establish or repair their credit histories and credit scores. Whether you re looking for an unsecured, guaranteed approval, or secured credit card, there s an option that s best for you.

With the credit cards below, you can enjoy all the benefits of having a credit card, even if you have no credit history, or have had credit problems in the past. Top No Annual Fee Secured Credit Card For Bad Credit In Canada:

A no annual fee secured credit card requires a security deposit but does not charge an annual fee. Your credit limit is then set at the amount of the deposit. You can put down as little as $500, or as much as $25,000, depending on the card. If you decide to cancel your secured card, you can just pay off your outstanding balance, and you ll get your security deposit back. Because the card is secured, almost everybody is approved. The only downside for some, is that it does require a bank account.

Why It’s a Winner: The Home Trust Secured Visa, is a great option for those not approved for an unsecured credit card, looking to re-build or establish credit through a secured credit card but don t want to pay an annual fee.

While it does require a minimum deposit of $500, you are guaranteed to get approved. Once approved, you can start to use it like any other credit card, and Home Trust will report your payments to both Equifax and TransUnion, helping you re-establish your credit.

It does come with a 19.99% interest rate, (but you shouldn t be carrying a balance on a secured credit card anyways). Also, if you have any large purchases you need to make on the card, you can deposit as much as $10,000, which should give you all the flexibility to have a large enough credit line for big ticket purchases.

Top Low Interest Secured Credit Card For Bad Credit In Canada:

IMPORTANT NOTICE! Peoples Trust has temporarily suspended issuing new credit cards. This is the message showing on their website:

Peoples Card Services continually analyzes and refines its products to best meet the needs of our clients. While we work to reposition a number of existingand new products, we have decided to stop accepting new applications for the Peoples Trust Secured Card product effective July 31st, 2017.

The Peoples Trust Secured Card program remains unchanged for existing cardholders who will continue to enjoy the same program benefits and use their card anywhere MasterCard is accepted.

Even though this is a secured credit card, some people still may carry a balance from time to time, and if you do, a low interest option is critical to keeping down your borrowing costs.

Why It’s a Winner: The People s Trust secured credit card offers a low interest rate of 12.99% on balances, two percentage lower than the next best secured credit card.

What also makes this card unique among it s peers, is that you can create a security deposit as low as $500 to as high as $25,000. That s the highest deposit allowed in Canada, to our knowledge, giving you the baility to create a $25,000 line of credit and all the flexibility to spend on big ticket items to meet your individual needs.

This card is ideal if you have had credit problems and want to rebuild your credit rating, have no credit history and want to establish a good credit rating or are a discharged bankrupt.

Just be careful with the low interest rate. If you intend on carrying a balance, you re probably better off not getting the card and using the money that you would have used for your deposit to pay for your service interest free.

You will need a bank account to be able to apply for this secured credit card.

Top Unsecured Credit Card For Bad Credit In Canada:

The Affirm MasterCard ® Credit Card

IMPORTANT NOTICE! Affirm Financial Services has temporarily suspended issuing new credit cards. This is the message showing on their website:

As we continue to find progressive ways to support the credit needs of Canadians, Affirm Financial Services has temporarily suspended issuing new credit cards, loans and all credit limit increases.

We are working hard to ensure that we bring you the credit products you need as soon as we can. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Existing Affirm Mastercard customers may continue to use the card in accordance with the terms of the cardholder agreement.

An unsecured credit card for bad credit is a card designed for those with impaired credit. However, because it is unsecured, you won t have to put any deposit or security against the card, and you re not required to have a bank account. It s a great alternative if you ve been turned down for a credit card by the banks.

The advantages of an unsecured credit card are: 1. You get a true line of credit, without having to give a security deposit. 2. Your credit history gets reported to the credit bureaus. 3. It allows you to build or re-build your credit, even if you had difficulties in the past or present even consumer proposal or bankruptcy.

Why It’s a Winner: The Affirm MasterCard is our top ranked credit card for bad credit, because it stands alone in Canada as the only unsecured credit card for bad credit with absolutely no security deposit required. It s a great opportunity for those who have declared bankruptcy or have been or are in consumer proposal, offering unsecured credit lines as high as $3,000.

It comes with an interest rate of 29.99% for homeowners and 34.99% for non-homeowners, comparable to a store credit card, and much lower than a pay day loan. But remember, you shouldn t be carrying a balance anyways. The idea here is for you to use good credit habits and pay down your credit card bill every month, not just the minimum payment, on time use automatic payments if you can t trust yourself. Pay down your balance every month and the interest rate is irrelevant.

It does come with an annual fee of $84 per year, charged at $7 per month. Reasonable for the risk the bank is taking, and when you consider many secured credit cards also come with an annual fee. Once you ve re-established your credit, you can apply for a no fee credit card, and avoid the annual fee altogether.

Affirm reports to both credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion, with every payment. Not all lenders do this. As a result, the Affirm MasterCard will help you build a positive track record of payment performance, and improve your credit history and score as quickly as possible.

READ THIS TO GET APPROVED: To help you get approved for this card, if you ve declared bankruptcy or been in consumer proposal you should have a FICO greater than 500. If not, your FICO should be greater than 600. Your annual income should be at least $10,000. You should not have a payday loan inquiry. Nor should you have a major derogatory like a delinquency, or judgement in the last 6 months.

To keep your promotional offers, you must stay within your credit limit and make your minimum monthly repayments on time.

You will not collect Avios for: cash withdrawals, interest, fees or charges, transactions at casinos, betting outlets or bookmakers, payments to offline or online current accounts, savings, share-trading, spread-betting, gambling, any other similar account or fraudulent transactions.

You can transfer balances to us ( 100 minimum) from most credit cards and some store cards, excluding other Lloyds Bank products.

Only bookings paid for in full using Avios are eligible to be upgraded using the voucher. Avios and Money bookings and bookings paid for fully in cash are excluded.

You will need a minimum of 8000 Avios to purchase a return flight. Spending 7,000 on your Avios Rewards American Express card would earn 8750 Avios. Spending 7,000 on your Avios Rewards Mastercard would earn 1750 Avios. If you don’t earn enough points through this card to purchase a flight using only Avios, you can also earn Avios from other sources. Any Avios balance you have earned previously can also be used to purchase flights.

You can only claim one upgrade voucher per year.

Upgrade vouchers will be valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

British Airways codeshare flights and flights from London City airport are excluded from using upgrade vouchers.

Using an upgrade voucher enables customers to upgrade their booking by one cabin class. Bookings cannot be upgraded to a First Class Cabin.

If your application is successful, your credit limit and any applicable promotional rates will be based on your current status.

    Avios explained

    What is Avios?

The Avios Travel Rewards Programme turns your everyday spending into flights, experiences, and other great travel rewards.

What can I get with Avios?

Use your Avios to fly worldwide. Your Avios will help you explore the world with scheduled flights on British Airways, Iberia, and Flybe. You can choose your seat, check in luggage, and enjoy complimentary food and drink. For example, with up to 9,000 Avios (plus airline taxes, fees, and carrier charges) you can get a return flight to destinations like Nice, Amsterdam, and Berlin. You can also use Avios to part-pay for flights.

    Can I get anything else?

Of course. As well as flying, you can also spend your Avios on a range of other rewards: hotel bookings, car hire, holidays and activity days, and even wine and beer cases. Here are just a few examples:

    • 3,000 Avios gets you a health club day pass for two
    • 4,500 Avios gets you afternoon tea for two or a round of paintballing
    • 7,000 Avios gets you a Favourites Six wine case or a West End theatre ticket (silver).

Can I use my Avios Rewards credit card account to upgrade flights?

Yes. With 7,000 of eligible spend in one year, you can upgrade either:

    • two one-way flights for two people travelling at the same time and to the same destination, or
    • one return journey booked on a British Airways main line service.

British Airways codeshare flights are excluded. Flights from London City Airport are excluded. Using an upgrade voucher enables customers to upgrade their booking by one cabin class. Bookings cannot be upgraded to a First Class Cabin. Upgrade from:

    • Euro Traveller to Club Europe
    • World Traveller to World Traveller Plus
    • World Traveller Plus to Club World

The year begins from the date your Avios Rewards credit card account is opened, and each subsequent year starts on that anniversary.

Only bookings paid for in full using Avios are eligible to be upgraded using the voucher. Avios and Money bookings and bookings paid for fully in cash are excluded.

You can only claim one upgrade voucher per year.

Upgrade vouchers will be valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

    How do I collect Avios?

Use your Avios Rewards American Express card or your Avios Rewards Mastercard every time you shop to collect Avios. Collect 1.25 Avios for every 1 you spend on your Avios Rewards American Express card, and 1.25 Avios for every 5 you spend on your Avios Rewards Mastercard.

Find out how many Avios you could get in a year with our handy Avios Rewards calculator.

What can I spend on to get Avios?

Most things you can spend on your credit card will enable you to collect Avios. However, you will not collect Avios for: cash withdrawals, interest, fees or charges, transactions at casinos, betting outlets or bookmakers, payments to offline or online current accounts, savings, share-trading, spread-betting, gambling, any other similar account, or fraudulent transactions.

Nobody knows you when you’re down and out, goes a famous blues song.

And when your credit score is bad really bad you’ll definitely be singing the blues whenever you’re trying to find financing options. (See also: How to Get a Credit Card When You Have Bad Credit)

While you may see secured credit cards as a financing option of last resort, you may be surprised by their unexpected benefits. Here are six of them. (See also: What Are Secured Credit Cards?)

    1. No Credit Check Needed

This is at the top of any list of unexpected benefits of a secured credit card.

Secured credit cards are good options for those that have bad credit and are looking to avoid an additional hard inquiry on their credit histories and a potential denial. To open a secured credit card you make an initial deposit, which becomes your card’s credit limit. That initial deposit can range from a couple hundred dollars up to about $5,000.

Your initial deposit is insured by FDIC and is refundable, after applicable fees, if you decide to close your account.

    2. Credit History for Credit Bureaus

Young folks starting out on their own, college students away from home, people recovering from a major life event (such as a divorce or major illness), and recent immigrants may also benefit from a secured credit card, because it helps them begin or reboot their credit histories.

When you have no recent pay stubs or tax returns available, some lenders may deny your credit application because you have no proof of income. Most secured credit card companies report your activity to the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), so that you can start building up (or rebuilding) your credit score.

Before signing up for a secured credit card, double check whether or not the lender reports to the credit bureaus.

    3. Eligible for Higher Limits

Through responsible management of your secured credit card, you can score a higher spending limit. By turning in your payments on time and paying your balance in full every month, you improve your chances of getting a higher limit sooner. (See also: How to Get the Most Out of Your Secured Credit Card)

Also, you can contact your lender to make an additional deposit and increase your credit limit. Over time, your lender may raise your limit without requiring any additional deposits.

    4. Grace Period

When choosing a secured credit card, it’s key that you choose one with a grace period. A grace period is the window of time, often between the end of your billing cycle and the due date for that cycle, in which you pay no interest so long as your new balance in paid in full.

While most credit cards offer a grace period, some secured credit cards don’t. Without a grace period, you’ll owe interest on every purchase. This would make improving your credit history tougher than it should be.

    5. Accepted Internationally

Most secured credit cards are accepted as a form of payment when traveling abroad. Given the several disadvantages of travelers checks, some international travelers may be happy to know that they can rely on their secured credit cards as a payment option.

It’s a good idea to read the terms of your secured credit card in order to be aware of applicable charges when using it outside of the U.S. However, there are some secured credit cards that have no foreign transaction fees and no annual fee. (See also: Secured Credit Cards with No Annual Fee)

These six unexpected benefits from secured credit cards may be a welcome surprise to those trying to rebuild their credit histories. Stay focused and remain positive. By choosing the right secured credit card, you’re taking the first step towards improving your financial situation. Ready to apply? See Wise Bread’s favorite secured credit cards.

Plastic can be fantastic when you’ve got the right credit card in your financial arsenal. Used wisely and responsibly, they can be a real boon for budgeting.

But how do you know which credit card to choose? With everything from balance transfer cards to cashback cards on the table – it can be a bit of a head-scratcher.

    Get informed

    • What’s the deal with interest-free credit cards?
    • Explore our our Credit card library – chock-full of tip-top information

Here’s the skinny on choosing a credit card.

    Purchase credit cards

    • Useful for spreading the cost of your shopping, for instance if you’re making a one-off expensive purchase
    • Certain purchase cards can offer interest-free introductory periods
    • Balance will need to be paid off before the introductory period ends to avoid getting charged interest

    Reward credit cards

    • Depending on the type of card you choose, you can earn points as you spend/join a loyalty scheme/get money off flights
    • Watch out for short introductory periods and high interest rates.
    • You’ll need to pay off the balance in full each month to really reap the rewards

    Cashback credit cards

    • Allow you to earn a percentage of your spending back as an annual bonus
    • Some may pay as much as 5% cashback
    • Tend to have a higher interest rate and shorter introductory periods, so the balance will need to be paid off in full each month to make it worth it

    Credit cards for debt

If you’re in the red, don’t be dismayed! There are options which could help you with managing debt and eventually be free of it. Remember that borrowing on a credit card is still debt though, so take steps to pay it off as soon as you can.

Let’s take a look at the potential choices.

    Balance transfer cards

    • Allow you to transfer existing debt to the card, there’ll usually be a fee for doing so though
    • 0% balance transfer introductory periods can be as lengthy as 30 months. Holy moly!
    • Balance must be paid before introductory period ends to avoid paying interest

    Credit builder cards

    • Useful for those with a poor credit score or little credit history looking to borrow
    • Usually have a high rate of interest to represent the risk they pose to the lender
    • Offer a limited amount of credit which can be extended if you demonstrate you can repay the balance off each month

    Prepaid cards

    • Top up your prepaid card with money to stay in credit
    • You can use the card until the balance hits zero
    • No credit check is required for a prepaid card

Credit card applications and credit ratings

A rejected credit card application can have a negative impact on your credit rating, which in turn can make it harder for you to be accepted for borrowing products, such as credit cards, loans and even mobile phone contracts in the future.

It’s important to make sure that you check your credit rating regularly, so you can weed out any erroneous details, like a wrong address, or anomalies and correct them sharpish.

    Smart search

Having a rejected credit card application can unfortunately leave its mark on your credit rating.

    Did you know.

    • In March 2017, the total credit card debt was £68.08bn, this works out at an average of £2,521 per household [2]

However, smart search is here to the rescue, displaying how likely you are to be accepted for a credit card before you apply, without leaving a mark on your credit rating. Pretty nifty.

What to consider when choosing a credit card

There’s a lot of choice when it comes to credit cards, so picking the right one takes a bit of consideration. First of all you need to decide what you need the card for.

Next, before plumping for the plastic, you should take into account the fees, interest rates, the representative APR, application criteria and the length of the introductory period, if there’s one. If you want to use your credit card abroad, you’ll want to choose a card that won’t charge you.

    Credit card protection

Cheers to section 75 of the 1974 Consumer Credit Act, which may protect items purchased with a value between £100 and £30,000. So if you buy an item or service that turns out to be faulty, you could get your money back either from the retailer or the credit card company.

    Read all about it.

    Private Student Loans

Private student loans bad creditCollege is expensive, and the costs seem to keep going up. Students are exploring more and more ways to fund these ballooning costs for their higher education. Student loan debt now tops $1 trillion.

When seeking financial aid, your first step should be to exhaust all forms of scholarship and grant money you may be eligible for. This is essentially free money that you don t have to pay back. Your next option should be federal financial aid. The U.S. Department of Education offers both grants and loans with low and fixed interest rates with flexible repayment plans. You will need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine how much aid you may qualify for through government funding.

Only as a last resort should you take out a private student loan. Private student loans are offered through financial institutions and organizations, and often don t have the same flexibility or favorable terms as a federal loan. Unfortunately, many times grants, scholarships, and federal loans are just not enough to cover the costs of college, and you will need private student loans to bridge the gap. In addition, federal funding is not available for non-U.S. citizens, while private funding may be.

    Fixed and Variable Interest Rates

    Eligibility and Application Process

Private student loans bad creditOften private loans require you to have an established and decent credit score to be eligible. Most students straight out of high school have yet to establish credit and therefore will require a cosigner. A cosigner is someone with good credit standing who agrees to be your guarantor or be financially liable for you during the life of your loan. Generally speaking, the better your – or your cosigner s – credit, the better your private student loan terms. Private loans may have higher loan limits and more generous loan cap amounts than federal loans for these borrowers. Private lenders may require a certification from the school in order to determine the maximum amount of money, or cap, they will offer to lend you. This is based on the cost of attendance minus any other aid you may already be receiving. Each private lender will set the terms, conditions, and eligibility requirements for the loans they offer.

The application process may also differ from lender to lender. Many have the option to fill them out electronically on their individual website. You will generally need your name, date of birth, school information, Social Security number, and income or tax information to apply. Most private lenders will perform a credit check to determine your eligibility. Private lenders do not publish the rate you will receive before the application is complete, so you should apply for more than one in order to determine which one offers the most favorable terms.

Once you have been approved, the lender will send you a letter detailing the terms and conditions of your loan. The money is not disbursed until you accept these terms and sign a promissory note that details your rights and responsibilities as a borrower. This note is a legally binding contract between you and the lender in which you agree to repay your loan and all interest accrued. Be sure to keep a copy of your promissory note for your records.

    Loan Disbursement Information

    • Room and board
    • Books
    • Computer equipment
    • School supplies
    • Dependent child care
    • Transportation

Loans are generally based on the total cost of attendance at a school, which is not limited to just the cost of enrollment. When applying for a private student loan, you should only borrow however much you actually need which may be less than the amount offered to you. It can be very easy to get into debt quickly and difficult to dig yourself out.

    Private student loans bad credit

    Repayment

Private student loans bad creditWhile some private loans will allow you to defer payments until after graduation, dropping below half-time status, or leaving school, many will require you to pay as you go, or at least pay the interest while you are still in school. Some loans offer a grace period, or time after graduation before your loan repayment period starts, but not all private loans do. Federal student loans have income-dependent repayment plans, as well as deferment and even forgiveness options that are not offered by private loans. Failure to make your payments on time can negatively affect your credit score as well.

Many lenders have flexible options for you to pay your bills in several accessible ways such as:

    • One-time electronic payments
    • Automatic debit or ACH payments
    • Mail-in payments
    • Payments over the phone

Your lender will be able to set you up on a repayment plan that works for you. A loan servicer, or the company that you pay your bills to and who is responsible for the administrative support of your loan, is able to work with you to find a viable and manageable repayment option. If you are having trouble making your payments, contact your loan servicer as soon as possible. It is also your responsibility to make sure your loan servicer has your current contact information and to make sure you are aware of when your repayment period starts.

Private loans may be a realistic option for you if your other sources of aid don t cover what you need to achieve your educational goals. You should be sure to contact your financial aid office at your school to determine what is the best option for you and your circumstances as to avoid getting into a financial situation from which you cannot easily recover.

Question: How long does someone have to be out of a bankruptcy to qualify for an FHA loan?

Answer:В Guidelines for FHA state two years must have elapsed since the discharge of the bankruptcy. However, between one two years may be acceptable if the bankruptcy was due to unfortunate circumstances beyond the borrower’s control. The FHA underwriters will consider this exception if they believe the credit problems is unlikely to recur, and the borrower has re-established enough good credit. Late mortgage payments after a bankruptcy usually will result in your loan being rejected. Buying a home with bad credit is still an option with FHA because they only require a fico score of 500.

First time buying and poor credit history are no problems for our experienced auto loan specialists.

Getting approved for an auto loan with bad credit may be easier than you think. Auto loans are different from unsecured lines of credit because they use the car as collateral. If you are unable to make your monthly payments, then the creditor has the right to repossess the car.

    Dealer Financed Auto Loan

There are several options for obtaining an auto loan. Many small, local, or used car dealerships offer buy-here-pay-here financing. You finance the vehicle through the dealership and send them your monthly payments. These programs are often less selective about the candidates they approve for financing, but they also generally charge very high interest rates.

If your credit is so poor that you have to accept a less-than-desirable loan offer, then make sure to always make your payments on time. Your credit score will improve with each timely payment. With one year’s worth of good credit reporting, you should be able to refinance your car and obtain better loan conditions.

    Easy Auto Credit Auto Loans

Another option is to obtain a loan through your personal bank. If you have a good history with the bank (few to no bounced checks or account overdraws), and you can prove that you are capable of paying back the loan, they may offer to finance your purchase. You can compare auto insurance quotes online for comprehensive auto coverage to protect you from vehicle theft.

Most of the larger dealerships have banks that they work with exclusively. If you chose to finance through their banks, a loan officer will walk you through all of the paperwork. You can attempt to negotiate the terms of the loan prior to agreeing to make the purchase, but you cannot be sure that you are getting the best deal. Most large dealerships will charge higher interest rates so that they make a profit off of obtaining financing for your purchase.

    Guaranteed Auto Credit

Perhaps the most active and selective means of obtaining auto loans is to request quotes through an online database. Many companies have websites that are partnered with several loan companies who will consider your credit, income, and work history, and then present you with the terms of the loan they are prepared to offer. These services allow you to compare loans side-by-side and choose the one that offers the best terms

The Truth About Repairing Bad Credit

Don’t trust anyone who tells you there is a quick fix for repairing your credit. Bad credit is a burden that can last years on your credit report, and may take a toll on your personal and professional life. Using credit cards responsibly and making on-time payments over a number of years and keeping account balances low relative to the credit limit helps building good credit history.

If you are thinking of applying for a credit card, choose the right card. A good option for consumers with bad credit is a secured credit card. Secured credit cards report your credit performance to consumer reporting agencies. So, if you are on time with all payments and do not go over the limit, you will likely be able to raise your credit score. Don’t believe those who claim prepaid cards can do the same for you. Prepaid cards do not send reports to the agencies, and as a result there’s no improvement for your credit history. However, they are good for establishing the habit of making payments regularly. They prepare you to have a regular credit card.

    Living With Bad Credit

    1. Although, for most credit cards designed for people with bad credit, interest rates are much higher than for any other credit card, paying off full balance at the end of each month will avoid interest.
    2. Secured Cards allow you to start a credit history. If you never miss payments and are careful with your spending, many banks will graduate you to an unsecured credit line, and will sometimes refund your deposit.
    3. Don’t believe fast fixes to bad credit. It takes time and dedication on your part. A negative report can last from 7 to 10 years, but this too shall pass, so start your good credit today, for better tomorrow.

    Service Alberta: Non-Profit Companies, non profit credit counseling.#Non #profit #credit #counseling

    Non-Profit Companies

Learn more about non-profit companies by clicking one of the links below.

What is a non-prof it company?

    • Non-profit companies are formed to promote art, science, religion, charity or other similar endeavors, or they may be formed solely for the purpose of promoting recreation for their members. Non-profit companies are governed under the Companies Act.
    • There are two types of non-profit companies – private and public.
      • Private non-profit companies have restrictions on the number of members or shareholders, the number of shares or membership transfers, and there are restrictions on invitations to the public to subscribe for shares or debentures of the company. The specific wording of the provisions can be found in the Companies Act. At least two people are needed to form a private company.
      • Public non-profit companies do not have any of the restrictions of the private companies. At least three people are needed to form a public company.

    How do I incorporate a non-profit company?

    • A non-profit name is usually made up of three parts, or elements: distinctive, descriptive and legal.
      • Here is an example of a non-profit company name that contains all three elements: Alberta Resorts Limited
      • A ‘distinctive element’ is a unique word or location that makes the non-profit company’s name different from others. In the example above, the distinctive element is ‘Alberta’.
      • A ‘descriptive element’ describes what the non-profit company is or does. The descriptive element in our example is ‘Resorts’.
      • The ‘legal element’ may be optional in certain names. If a legal element is to be used, it must be ‘Ltd.’ or ‘Limited’
    • Your non-profit company may also use a ‘number’ name, e.g. 6565651 Alberta Ltd. The numeric portion of the name is assigned by Corporate Registry. ‘Alberta’ always forms the second part of the name. You may choose to use either ‘Ltd.’ or ‘Limited’ as the legal element.

    • You won’t need a NUANS report if you have chosen to use a ‘number’ name.
    • Corporate Registry will examine this report to determine whether your group can use the name you have chosen.
    • If you choose to have a name that is similar to another corporation or non-profit group’s name, you will need to obtain written permission from that group to use the name.

Step 3: Complete the forms (memorandum, articles, address, directors)

    • Complete a Memorandum of Association, either for a company limited by shares or a company limited by guarantee of the members.
      • The memorandum contains the company objectives. The objectives cannot indicate the company will carry on a profit-making business.
      • This document must contain a clause stating that no dividends or income will be paid to members and that all profits or any income, if any, must be used to promote the company objects.
      • In a company limited by guarantee, each member guarantees to help pay the company’s debts and liabilities before it winds up or stops carrying on its activities. The maximum amount of contribution each member must make has to be stated in the memorandum.
      • In a company limited by shares, the memorandum of association must set out details describing the shares, included the actual number of shares to be authorized.
    • Create Articles of Association
      • The articles are the operating rules for the company.
      • Companies that are ‘limited by shares’ may adopt ‘Table A’ of the Companies Act instead of creating their own set of articles. If ‘Table A’ is adopted it must be signed by the same people who signed the memorandum.
      • Companies ‘limited by guarantee of the members’ may also adopt ‘Table A’ but they must remove the provisions that refer to shares, liens, transfers and alteration of capital, etc.
    • Complete the address form.
    • Complete a directors form when the memorandum or articles indicate that the initial subscribers will also be the first directors of the company.
      • Otherwise, the directors form does not need to be completed and submitted until the first directors have been elected.

Step 4: Submit the completed forms in duplicate, together with the NUANS report and the incorporation fee, to Corporate Registry.

    • Your information will be examined, and, if the requirements are met, a Certificate of Incorporation will be issued.

How does my non-profit company become a registered charity, conduct a fund-raising event, or apply for a gaming licence?

    • Some non-profit companies may be eligible to become registered charities. Review the Canada Revenue Agency website for detailed information.
      • In particular, ensure your company objectives and dissolution provisions meet the ‘charitable’ requirements.
    • Your non-profit company may need to register if it plans to conduct any fund-raising activities. Learn more about Alberta’s requirements for charitable organizations.
    • The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission is responsible for issuing gaming licences for charitable organizations.

How can our non-profit company handle internal disputes?

    • Non-profit companies must be prepared to resolve their own internal disputes.
    • Corporate Registry does not supervise the conduct of companies, nor does it provide a counseling service on matters other than forms and the documents filed with them.
    • To ensure that internal disputes are handled fairly, Corporate Registry recommends that the Articles of Association include a mediation or arbitration procedure.

How can I become an effective board member for my non-profit company?

    • You can learn more about the ethical and legal responsibilities of serving on a board as well as the roles and responsibilities, committee effectiveness, recruiting and orienting board members, and board/staff relations. See Alberta Culture’s Board Development Program (BDP).
    • The BDP offers hands-on board governance workshops free of charge for nonprofit boards and has a variety of online resources that can be downloaded from its web site at no cost.
