Five Ways To Get a Free Credit Score (No Trials!)

Where to get a free credit scoreUpdated 2017. As noted, the government requires the credit bureaus to provide you a free credit report once every 12 months from AnnualCreditReport.com. Ideally, you should check in more frequently. The services listed below provide you a free credit score updated throughout the year either daily, weekly, or monthly. Most offer additional data taken directly from your credit reports, while some even offer free daily credit monitoring or free identity protection services.

As of OCTOBER 2017, all three major credit bureaus are covered: TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. You do not need to already have a specific credit card. Being ad-supported, they can do so without the hassle of annoying trial membership offers, requiring credit card numbers, or having to remember to cancel anything.

Where to get a free credit score

CreditSesame.com offers a free credit score every month, based on your TransUnion credit report (VantageScore). They used Experian data in the past, but it appears that most members have been migrated over to Transunion. Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

  • Free daily credit monitoring. Credit Sesame also offers free daily credit monitoring of your TransUnion data, with alerts coming via e-mail, text, or smartphone app. This service tracks more than 40 different credit activities such as a balance change, address change or when a new account is opened.
  • Free identity protection and restoration services. Credit Sesame also includes $50,000 in identity theft insurance and access to identity restoration support in their free membership level.

Where to get a free credit score

CreditKarma.com offers you two free credit scores, based on your TransUnion and Equifax credit reports and updated weekly (VantageScore). Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required. The two-in-one feature is nice.

  • Free credit monitoring. Credit Karma also offers free e-mail credit monitoring alerts of your TransUnion data.

Where to get a free credit score

FreeCreditScore.com offers a free credit score every month, based on your Experian credit report (FICO 08). Score range is 300-850. They require your full Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

  • Free credit monitoring. They also offer free e-mail credit monitoring alerts of your Experian data.

Where to get a free credit score

WalletHub.com offers a free credit score based on your TransUnion credit report (VantageScore), updated daily. They also provide access to your full TransUnion credit report daily (although it may not be updated that often). Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

Your Existing Credit Card

I wouldn t sign up for a new credit card just for a credit score, but if you already have one, check to see if it offers a free monthly credit score as a perk:

Some may point out that many of the scores above are not FICO scores. No, they are not FICO scores because Fair Isaac charges more money for them and these companies can t cover those costs with their advertising. However, these free credit scores can still be very useful for tracking changes and general trends in your credit history. Free credit monitoring is also a great way to track any big changes including fraudulent activity. There is value in getting an e-mail notification whenever a new account is added to my report.

How to Get Your Credit Report for Free

Your credit report include information on your address, the number of credit accounts you have, whether you pay your bills on time, and whether you have been sued or filed from bankruptcy. Lenders use it when determining whether to lend to you and at what rates. The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends that you check your credit report at least once a year to prevent identity theft and to make sure your information is being accurately reported. [1] Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you are legally entitled to at least one report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus, and the process to obtain them – whether online or by mail – is quick and easy.

3 Ways to Buy or Lease a Car when You Have Bad Credit, lease a car with bad credit.#Lease #a #car #with #bad #credit

How to Buy or Lease a Car when You Have Bad Credit

Car commercials give the impression that anyone can walk into a dealership and drive out in a new car. The “catch” usually appears in small print at the bottom of the screen: “subject to credit approval.” However, don’t fear if you have bad credit. It’s still possible to get a car loan or lease, though you will probably pay higher interest rates. If necessary, wait a little while and apply after you have improved your credit.

Leasing a car – 5 dumb car leasing mistakes to avoid

Leasing a car with bad credit

Car-leasing missteps

People who lease a car usually do so because it allows them to drive a newer vehicle for less money than it would cost to buy one.

But many drivers make the mistake of not reading the fine print before signing a contract, says Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor at Edmunds.com.

“People make a lot of mistakes when setting up their car leases, and it can cost them a lot of money,” he says. Here are five common car-leasing mistakes that consumers should avoid.

Leasing a car with bad credit

Paying too much money upfront

Car dealers advertise low monthly lease payments on new autos, but consumers usually are asked to pay several thousand dollars at the beginning of the term to get the low payments, says Reed.

That money is generally used to pay a portion of the car lease in advance. “But prepaying is a problem if the car is wrecked or stolen in the first few months,” says Reed.

If that were to happen, the insurance company would reimburse the leasing company for the value of the car, but the money the customer paid upfront would likely not be refunded, he says. As a result, the consumer wouldn’t have a car, after having paid a lot of money upfront.

Reed suggests that consumers not pay more than about $2,000 in advance. “In many cases, it makes sense to put nothing down,” he says.

If you pay less in advance, your monthly payment would be higher. But you could take the “prepayment” cash and put it in an interest-bearing account instead.

You could use that money to help make the monthly lease payments, says Reed. And if something happens to the vehicle before the end of the term, at least the leasing company wouldn’t have a big chunk of your money.

Use this calculator to decide whether buying or leasing a car is cheaper for you

Leasing a car with bad credit

Forgetting gap insurance

The value of any new car drops significantly after it’s driven off the lot — and leased cars are no exception, says David Jacobson, CEO of CU Xpress Lease in Hauppauge, New York, which originates and services car leases for credit unions.

If a leased car is stolen or totaled and the car insurance company makes a payment for the value of the car, that sum may not cover the consumer’s total obligation under the terms of the lease, he says.

The driver would likely have to pay the balance out of pocket unless he has gap insurance. In that case, the policy would cover the difference, he says.

At the beginning of any car lease, consumers should ask if the contract includes this specialty gap insurance coverage, says Jacobson. If it doesn’t, the customer should consider looking for a car with a lease plan that does.

“There is exposure without gap insurance,” he says, “so I would not lease a car without it.”

Don’t get ambushed by a bad credit score at the dealership. Check your credit score and credit report first at myBankrate for free.

Leasing a car with bad credit

Underestimating miles you ve driven

According to Jacobson, many leasing companies are able to advertise low monthly payments because they have low mileage limits.

It’s common for leasing contracts to have a driving maximum of 10,000 miles to 15,000 miles per year, he says. If consumers exceed those limits, they could be charged an additional 10 cents to 30 cents per mile at the end of the lease.

“You could wind up owing a lot of money for miles when it’s time to turn in the car,” Jacobson says. The driver could owe big bucks on a car he is no longer driving.

To avoid this extra fee, consumers should know their driving habits before signing the contract, says Jacobson. If they know they’ll probably drive more miles than the agreement allows, they could ask for a higher limit.

Still, there’s a drawback: The monthly lease payment would probably go up with a mileage increase, he says.

Leasing a car with bad credit

Not maintaining the car

If the car has damage that goes beyond normal wear and tear, the driver could be on the hook for additional fees when it’s time to return it to the dealer, says Jacobson.

Generally, if a car has a scratch but the mark is less than the size of a driver’s license or business card, many companies will consider it normal use. They probably won’t charge a penalty, says Jacobson.

Jacobson says that if there’s damage to the car, the customer will have a chance to have it fixed on his own dime before turning it in. Otherwise, the leasing company will assess a value to the damage.

In terms of “normal wear,” the definition can vary, and drivers shouldn’t assume that their own lease servicers will be lenient. “Some will nitpick the car to pieces,” says Jacobson. “Before getting the vehicle, consumers should ask what the lease-end-condition guidelines are.”

Barbara Terry, an automobile columnist and author of the book “How Athletes Roll,” says if the car is significantly damaged, drivers can expect a bill for repairs at “full market price.”

Leasing a car with bad credit

Leasing for too long

Most car-lease terms range from two to four years, though some can go longer, says Reed. However, drivers who lease cars for too long could end up paying extra money in maintenance.

Reed recommends that consumers not lease cars for longer than the warranty period, which averages three years, or 36,000 miles. “That’s a turning point in the car’s life, when it goes out of the bumper-to-bumper warranty,” says Reed.

“If you keep the car longer, you’d have to consider getting an extended warranty at an additional cost, plus you may need to pay for new tires and brakes — all for a car that you don’t own,” he says.

If a consumer plans to be in the same car for a long time, it’s probably better to buy it, says Terry.

“If the driver owns the car, he’d have to pay for the car and pay for maintenance, but then he could continue to drive it for several years without having to worry about a required monthly lease payment,” she says.

How To Get A VA Loan With Bad Credit – VA Home Loan, how to get a loan with bad credit.#How #to #get #a #loan #with #bad #credit

How To Get A VA Loan With Bad Credit

How to get a loan with bad creditContrary to popular belief, VA loans for those with bad credit are actually easy to qualify for if 1) you have no outstanding collections, 2) no outstanding judgements, 3) stable income, 4) a median credit score of 620 or higher. This is because VA loans were designed to be a benefit to the borrower.

The VA Home Loan Program was created in 1944 as a thank you for service personnel returning from World War II. This home loan guarantee is designed to make buying a home easy, affordable, and safe.

The easy part of the design is to make the loan accessible to borrowers with less than perfect credit.

One of the main purposes of the program was to cut the common hassles of obtaining a home loan such as good credit, down-payment, closing costs, etc.

Many veterans who have spent time overseas lack positive credit. Others lacked the funds for a down-payment. To change this, the government found that one of the best way to assist veterans after their completed service was to help them get a farm or a home.

How to get a loan with bad creditA few changes have occurred over the years, including an increase in the amount veterans may borrow and the ability for active duty to apply to get a VA home loan .

The maximum $0 down loan limit currently varies between $417,000 to over $625,000 depending on what county you plan to buy in.

The VA Loan Program gives lenders the assurance that the loan will be paid for and gives veterans the support needed to obtain a house.

The credit needed to obtain VA loans is determined by a few key factors. The most important of those are satisfactory payment history, and present and/or anticipated income. This means that your income needs to be stable and enough to cover all current bills, give you enough disposable income to meet the VA standards for cost of living plus the additional VA loan mortgage payment.

Stable income is equivalent to 24 months of consistent employment. If the time of employment is less than this, the underwriter will have to evaluate the probability of your future employment. In most areas, the FICO Credit Score must be a least 620.

However, there are VA loans for some borrowers who have no credit score or even a score less than 620. If you are without credit, qualification is determined based on past payment history of rent, car insurance and other regular monthly expenses.

To be deemed a borrower with satisfactory credit a number of factors will be analyzed. Over the past year, you may not have made any late payments. If there are any unpaid or untimely debts, your credit may be deemed unsatisfactory.

Late payments however, will not result in an automatic denial. If you have a special circumstance, this rule can be forgiven. If you have any open collection accounts you may still be considered eligible, as long as there is a timely payment plan in place. If you are participating in a Consumer Credit Counseling program or are in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, in lieu of negative credit ratings, this actually can be a positive factor. The important thing is that you are currently on a regular, consistent payment schedule, and those payments are being made on time.

In regards to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, if it has been over two years since the bankruptcy was discharged or forgiven, the bankruptcy will not play a factor in determining satisfactory credit.

As mentioned before, a Chapter 13 does not have to be discharged, and you may still qualify even in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, as long as you repaying your debt as agreed.

Also, it will not count against you if you filed bankruptcy due to circumstances out of your control (such as a medical issue not covered by insurance).

Lastly, it s not a negative factor if bankruptcy was filed due to a failed self-employed business venture if the borrower has regained employment, and there is no derogatory credit information since then or prior to self-employment.

Finally, to ensure acceptable credit, you can t have too many inquiries on your credit report. In doing so, the credit rating drops dramatically. In addition to the low score, multiple credit inquires can look like new credit lines and this can affect your ability to repay the debt. Because of this, multiple credit inquires can cause delays in your loan approval.

The last thing you need to know to get a VA loan, you need to be sure there aren t any savings or checking overdraft fees. If you are a veteran in the market for buying a house, take the time to fill out a VA loan application or call 888-573-4496 to get assistance. The VA home loan centers are here to help you learn all you want to know about the VA loan process.

Paul Sherry RVs specializes in loan approval. We work with a number of lenders including national banks, local credit unions, and some banks that work exclusively with sub-prime RV and Travel Trailer loans. While the decision is ultimately up to the banks, we will try our best to get you approved at the best rates possible, no matter what your credit situation is. Get started here!

One reason Paul Sherry RVs has such good luck with bad credit approvals is because our prices are typically well below the “book value.” Banks love this because it is a safe investment.

In order to maximize your chances for approval, please keep the following in mind when looking for your RV:

    • Look for RVs less than 10 years old
    • Look for a selling price that is below NADA book value (most of our inventory will fit this)
    • Towables are easier to get approved than Motorized RVs
    • The loan amount should be between $5,000 and $40,000 (not an absolute ceiling)
    • When deciding on a budget, be sure to factor in a higher interest rate (typically between 17 – 20%)
    • At least 10% down is required for sub-prime loans (your trade can count toward your down payment)
    • Look for “part-time use” RVs and travel trailers. Banks don’t like to loan to full-timers or anyone using their RV as a temporary or permanent residence.
    • Your credit score must be at least 550 or above

Q: What will my payment be?

A: Payments depend on a number of factors including the loan amount, loan term (how many months), and the interest rate you get approved for. Sub-prime interest rates on RV loans generally range between 17.95% and 20.95%.

Q: Why are rates so high?

A: To answer this question, you must think like a bank. In any loan situation, the rate is always negatively correlated with your credit score. In other words, the higher your credit score, the lower the rate, and vice versa. This is because your credit score tells a bank how risky it is to loan money to you. RV loans also tend to draw slightly higher rates than car loans do, because an RV is “want” and not a “need.” The bank assumes that if times get tough, your RV payment will be a lower priority than your house or car payment.

Q: What happens after I fill out the Online Financing Application?

A: The application gets sent directly to our finance manager. Before doing anything, we always contact the customer to find out exactly what he or she would like to accomplish and what steps are needed to get there. From there, the process depends on what the customer’s goals are. Nothing will be done without the customer’s permission.

    Q. Can I get an RV loan with No Money Down?

A: Not likely. Banks typically look for at least 10% down for sub-prime loans.

    Q. What is the maximum loan term when financing an RV with bad credit?

A: The maximum loan term can range from 96, up to 144! This limit depends on factors such as how much money you put down, the year and type of RV that you are purchasing, and your credit score.

    Q. Can Paul Sherry RVs help me get a loan if I am buying an RV from another person?

A: No. We are not lenders ourselves, and can only help you get approved for loans on RVs and Travel Trailers that we sell. With our extensive inventory, there’s a good chance you can find what you are looking for. Please browse our inventory , or contact a salesmen if you need help finding something that suits your needs!

Q: I have heard that pulling my credit report can hurt my credit score. Will my credit score be hurt from filling out the Online Financing Applications?

A: Your credit score WILL NOT be affected by filling out the Online Financing Application. Again, the application goes directly to our finance manager and no further action will take place until we contact you. That means we will not pull your credit report, send the application out to any banks, or share your information without discussing it with you first.

Q: How do I know my information is safe?

A: As stated in our privacy policy, the information that you give us by filling out the form is only shared with the banks we work with. We DO NOT SHARE OR SELL your information to any third parties, and you WILL NOT be put on any mailing or spam lists. We also keep all private information locked up in accordance with state law.

Mortgages can be a bit of a minefield, and many borrowers with limited experience may not be sure how to get a mortgage with bad credit. Results are often littered with best buy tables for grade A credit scores displaying mortgages that you probably won’t qualify for, and other products that may not apply to you, not to mention the sites selling PPI claim help, and loads of other spam.

Here, we want to make it clear what mortgages you’d have a chance with, give you an idea of cost so you know its within budget or not, and show you the steps to help show how to get a bad credit mortgage.

So, in this article we cover:

    • The process for arranging a bad credit mortgage
    • Which types of credit issues are acceptable
    • Bad credit mortgage costs
    • Adverse credit mortgage FAQ

Can i get a mortgage with bad credit

Process for arranging a bad credit mortgage:

To apply for a mortgage with bad credit, and make sure you get accepted for the best deal you can get, there’s a few things to keep in mind along the way.

    Get your credit files

This has to be step 1. How do you expect to know the best lender for you if you don’t know how severe your credit issues are? The strange thing is, different credit firms and banks report their information back to different reference agencies, and what’s showing with one may not show with another. So, with potential mortgage lenders using the 3 main credit reference agencies Experian, Equifax, and Call credit, if you had just your Experian credit file which says you’re clean credit, but applied to a lender that uses Equifax, you may find yourself being declined and wondering why. For this exact reason, because the 3 files can differ massively in terms of what is actually registered, it’s vital to have a copy of each.

NOTE: You will NOT be penalised or scored any differently for searching your own credit file with these agencies, credit score is only affected by applications for credit. AND – ITS FREE! Sign up for the free trials below and order your reports now.

    Don’t make multiple searches

IMPORTANT! Don’t go to your bank or make multiple applications online! Most people bank with high street organisations, none of which cater for borrowers with adverse credit. ‘Advisers’ in these banks are targeted to get you credit scored and out the door asap, and will often do so with little regard to the effect it may have on your credit score. Applying with a lender that will not lend to you can be a damaging exercise, not to mention a waste of time.

If you have adverse credit and aren’t sure if people can still get a mortgage with poor credit score, then you need to seek advice.

    Get a reasonably priced broker

The advice you can get from a broker who knows what they are doing, who knows which lenders will consider you before you even apply, is often invaluable. Still, it’s important not to pay the earth. Maximum fees tend to be 2% of the loan amount, however these are top end and its rare a broker will ask for the full amount. Generally anywhere from £0 for straightforward cases, to £300 for cases that need some work, up to £1000 for more tricky circumstances, would be a fair pricing scale. Every case is different however, and your adviser should make things clear to you and gain your agreement before proceeding with any actual applications. To get a quote from one of the specialists we work with get in touch

Find additional deposit or repair credit file and Re-apply

If you have credit issues preventing you from mortgaging at a specific loan to value (LTV), sometimes lowering the risk to the lender can help. Where it’s unlikely an applicant with a £1,000 default registered a few months earlier will get approved at 90% LTV, raising capital so the LTV is 85% may just be enough for a lender to do it. If not, and there’s nothing that can be done, time will really be the only healer. There are however, certain things you can do to improve your credit score more quickly, see our article on improving score here for more info.

TOP TIP: One of the best things you can do to increase your credit score is to obtain an adverse specific credit card, and spend and repay in full on a monthly basis – this helps to prove you can borrow and live within your means at the same time, and you’ll notice your score improve over the coming weeks and months. There are 2 options here, the first is a standard credit card specifically for those with bad credit, the second is for those who are declined for standard cards and need a guaranteed-acceptance card (usually if you have had more severe and more recent adverse credit). We’d recommend trying for the Aqua card first, then go for the Mastercard if declined.

Check off these 6 items before buying

Buying a home is a huge investment. Before you jump into the wonderful world of homeownership, make sure you are prepared with these six steps. Learn about credit score requirements, mortgage options and other must-do’s.

6 simple steps to buying a house

    1. Strengthen your credit score.
    2. Figure out what you can afford.
    3. Save for down payment, closing costs.
    4. Build a healthy savings account.
    5. Get preapproved for a mortgage.
    6. Buy a house you like.

Ready to be a homeowner? Compare mortgage rates to get the best deal on a mortgage.

Buying a house with bad credit

    Strengthen your credit score

“Below 660 or 680, you’re either going to have to pay sizable fees or a higher down payment,” says Barry Zigas, housing policy director for the Consumer Federation of America.

On the other end, a score of 700 to 720 will get you a good deal, and 750 and above will garner the best rates on the market.

Improve your chances by: pulling your credit reports and ensuring you’re not being unfairly penalized for old, paid or settled debts. Get your credit report and score today, free and with no obligation, at myBankrate.

Stop applying for new credit a year before you apply for financing. And keep the moratorium in place until after you close on your home.

Buying a house with bad credit

Figure out what you can afford

The buyer’s mantra: Get a home that’s financially comfortable.

There are various rules of thumb that will help you get an idea of how much home you can afford. If you’re using FHA financing, your home payment can’t exceed 31 percent of your monthly income. But with some mitigating factors, the FHA will let you go higher.

For conventional loans, a safe formula is that home expenses should not exceed 28 percent of your gross monthly income, says Susan Tiffany, retired director of personal finance publications for adults for the Credit Union National Association.

For a rough assessment of how much house you can afford, check out Bankrate’s new house calculator.

Improve your chances by: trying on that financial obligation long before you sign the mortgage papers. Before you shop for a home, calculate the mortgage payment for the home in your intended price range, along with the increased expenses (such as taxes, insurance and utilities). Then bank the difference between that and what you’re paying now.

Now that you know how much you can afford, compare mortgage rates.

Buying a house with bad credit

Save for down payment, closing costs

Depending on your credit and financing, you’ll typically need to save enough money for a down payment — somewhere between 3 and 20 percent of the home’s price.

To get an FHA loan, you need a credit score of 580 or higher.

One exception: Veterans Affairs loans, which require no down payment.

Another cash expense: closing costs. Whatever your loan source, you’ll also need money to pay closing costs. For a $200,000 mortgage, closing costs run (depending on where you live) from $2,300 to $4,000. Get the average closing costs in your state at Bankrate’s closing costs map.

Improve your chances by: banking your own money and seeking down payment assistance. Often, it’s location-based or tagged to a certain type of buyer, like first-timers. Search online with the city name, then the county name, along with word combinations such as “down payment assistance,” “first-time homebuyers” and “homebuyer’s assistance.”

In a buyer’s market, you can also negotiate to have the seller pay a portion of the closing costs.

Buying a house with bad credit

    Build a healthy savings account

Building your savings is something you should do over and above saving money for the down payment and closing. Your lender wants to see that you’re not living paycheck to paycheck. If you have three to five months’ worth of mortgage payments set aside, that makes you a much better loan candidate. And some lenders and backers, like the FHA, will give you a little more latitude on other factors if they see that you have a cash cushion.

That money will also help cover maintenance and repair issues that come up when you own a home. While repairs are sporadic, items such as a new roof, water heater or other big-ticket items can hit suddenly and hard.

Improve your chances by: setting aside money every month. A good rule of thumb: On average, you’ll spend 2.5 to 3 percent of your home’s value annually on upkeep, repairs and maintenance. If you’re buying a $250,000 home, aim to save $520 to $625 per month.

Get some interest on your savings today by shopping savings accounts.

Buy a house with bad credit

Buy a house with bad credit

Buy a house with bad credit

    7 Ways To Improve Your Credit Score, a credit score is.#A #credit #score #is

7 ways to improve your credit score

If you need to boost your credit score, it won’t happen overnight.

Credit scores take into account years of past behavior you can find on your credit report, and not just your present actions.

But there are some steps you can take now to start on the path to better credit.

7 steps to raise your credit score

    1. Watch those credit card balances.
    2. Eliminate credit card balances.
    3. Leave old debt on your report.
    4. Use your calendar.
    5. Pay bills on time.
    6. Don’t hint at risk.
    7. Don’t obsess.

    1. Watch those credit card balances

One major factor in your credit score is how much revolving credit you have versus how much you’re actually using. The smaller that percentage is, the better it is for your credit rating.

The optimum: 30 percent or lower.

To boost your score, “pay down your balances, and keep those balances low,” says Pamela Banks, senior policy counsel for Consumers Union.

If you have multiple credit card balances, consolidating them with a personal loan could help your score.

What you might not know: Even if you pay balances in full every month, you still could have a higher utilization ratio than you’d expect. That’s because some issuers use the balance on your statement as the one reported to the bureau. Even if you’re paying balances in full every month, your credit score will still weigh your monthly balances.

One strategy: See if the credit card issuer will accept multiple payments throughout the month.

    2. Eliminate credit card balances

“A good way to improve your credit score is to eliminate nuisance balances,” says John Ulzheimer, a nationally recognized credit expert formerly of FICO and Equifax. Those are the small balances you have on a number of credit cards.

The reason this strategy can boost your score: One of the items your score considers is just how many of your cards have balances, Ulzheimer says. That’s why charging $50 on one card and $30 on another instead of using the same card (preferably one with a good interest rate) can hurt your credit score.

The solution to improve your credit score is to gather up all those credit cards with small balances and pay them off, Ulzheimer says. Then select one or two go-to cards that you can use for everything.

“That way, you’re not polluting your credit report with a lot of balances,” he says.

    3. Leave old debt on your report

Some people erroneously believe that old debt on their credit report is bad.

The minute they get their home or car paid off, they’re on the phone trying to get it removed from their credit report.

Negative items are bad for your credit score, and most of them will disappear from your report after seven years. However, “arguing to get old accounts off your credit report just because they’re paid is a bad idea,” Ulzheimer says.

Good debt — debt that you’ve handled well and paid as agreed — is good for your credit. The longer your history of good debt is, the better it is for your score.

One of the ways to improve your credit score: Leave old debt and good accounts on as long as possible. This is also a good reason not to close old accounts where you’ve had a solid repayment record.

Trying to get rid of old good debt “is like making straight A’s in high school and trying to expunge the record 20 years later,” Ulzheimer says. “You never want that stuff to come off your history.”

    4. Use your calendar

If you’re shopping for a home, car or student loan, it pays to do your rate shopping within a short time period.

Every time you apply for credit, it can cause a small dip in your credit score that lasts a year. That’s because if someone is making multiple applications for credit, it usually means he or she wants to use more credit.

However, with three kinds of loans — mortgage, auto and more recently, student loans — scoring formulas allow for the fact that you’ll make multiple applications but take out only one loan.

The FICO score, a credit score commonly used by lenders, ignores any such inquiries made in the 30 days prior to scoring. If it finds some that are older than 30 days, it will count those made within a typical shopping period as just one inquiry.

The length of that shopping period depends on the credit score used.

If lenders are using the newest forms of scoring software, then you have 45 days, says Ulzheimer. With older forms, you need to keep it to 14 days.

Older forms of the software won’t count multiple student loan inquiries as one, no matter how close together you make applications, he says.

    5. Pay bills on time

If you’re planning a major purchase (like a home or a car), you might be scrambling to assemble one big chunk of cash.

While you’re juggling bills, you don’t want to start paying bills late. Even if you’re sitting on a pile of savings, a drop in your score could scuttle that dream deal.

One of the biggest ingredients in a good credit score is simply month after month of plain-vanilla, on-time payments.

“Credit scores are determined by what’s in your credit report,” says Linda Sherry, director of national priorities for Consumer Action. If you’re bad about paying your bills — or paying them on time — it damages your credit and hurts your credit score, she says.

That can even extend to items that aren’t normally associated with credit reporting, such as library books, she says. That’s because even if the original “creditor,” such as the library, doesn’t report to the bureaus, they may eventually call in a collections agency for an unpaid bill. That agency could very well list the item on your credit report.

Putting cash into a savings account for a major purchase is smart. Just don’t slight the regular bills to do it.

    6. Don’t hint at risk

Sometimes, one of the best ways to improve your credit score is to not do something that could sink it.

Two of the biggies are missing payments and suddenly paying less (or charging more) than you normally do, says Dave Jones, retired president of the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies.

Other changes that could scare your card issuer (but not necessarily hurt your credit score): taking cash advances or even using your cards at businesses that could indicate current or future money stress, such as a pawnshop or a divorce attorney, he says.

“You just don’t want to do anything that would indicate risk,” Jones says.

    7. Don’t obsess

You should be laser-focused on your credit score when you know you’ll soon need credit. In the interim, pay your bills and use credit responsibly. Your score will reflect these smart spending behaviors.

Are you getting ready to make a big purchase, such as a home or car? At least a few months in advance, have a look at your credit score.

While the score that you get through your bank or a service may not be the exact same one your lender uses, it will grade you on many of the same criteria and give you a good indication of how well you’re managing your credit. It will provide you with specific ways to improve your credit score — in the form of several codes or factors that kept your score from being higher.

If you are denied credit (or don’t qualify for the lender’s best rate), the lender has to show you the credit score it used, thanks to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

Another smart move is to regularly check your credit reports.

You’re entitled to one of each of your three credit bureau reports (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) for free every 12 months through AnnualCreditReport.com.

It’s smart to stagger them. Send for one every four months, and you can monitor your credit for free.

    Frequently asked questions

It’s hard to imagine life without a credit card as these days you can use them almost anywhere, anytime. Perhaps you want to splash out in the sales, treat your family to a holiday or maybe indulge in some online shopping. There’s no doubt that credit cards can be a quick and easy way to pay for a wide range of goods and services. Plus, you can spread the cost over several months, allowing you to budget. But picking the right credit card can be confusing as there are so many different deals on the market. Our guide explains how credit cards work – and how to select the right card for you.

    What is a credit card?

A credit card is basically a loan, but if you clear your balance in full when you receive your monthly statement, the loan is interest free. If you can’t afford to pay off the outstanding debt, you can make monthly payments, but you will normally be charged interest. The rates vary, but 19% is typical.

    Credit card comparison

When using our credit card comparison tool, decide what you are going to use the card for. You can choose between balance transfer cards, purchase cards, money transfer cards, cards that reward your spending and cards to use abroad

    • 0% purchase cards: enable you to buy items upfront, while paying off the amount you’ve spent over a stated period without incurring any interest charges.
    • Balance transfer cards: enable you to transfer an existing credit card balance to a new card that charges less interest.
    • Reward cards: – these cards offer cashback or loyalty points.

If you want to use a card for shopping, there’s little point in applying for a 0% balance transfer rate. Shoppers should search for a deal that offers a low rate on purchases. Some cards, for example, charge 0% on purchases for a number of months, and they can be a cost effective way to pay for a big ticket item, such as a washing machine or sofa. If you clear the debt before the 0% deal expires, you will pay no interest whatsoever.

Low rate cards are better suited to people who are not able to pay their balance in full each month. There is no introductory interest rate offer. Instead, you will pay a relatively low rate of interest for as long as it takes to clear your debt.

People who have run up debts on another card or cards at a high rate of interest can save money with a balance transfer deal. Let’s say you have accumulated debts of £3000 on a card that charges interest at 19%. If you switch the outstanding balance to a card that charges 0% interest for 24 months, you can instantly cut the cost of your debt.

Reward cards are ideal if you pay off your balance every month as the interest rate is irrelevant. You can therefore look out for a card that offers cashback or loyalty points.

There are also various deals available for people who take their credit card abroad and for those who have a poor credit history.

Pros and cons of credit cards

Credit cards can be a great way to pay for goods and services without having to stump up the money upfront. You can even use your credit card like an interest-free loan, allowing you to borrow money for free. You also get some protection under the Consumer Credit Act if you buy something with a credit card.

But let’s not forget that it’s easy to run up expensive debts with a credit card, especially if you pay off only the minimum balance each month. You can also get into financial difficulty if you don’t stick to the rules. For example, most companies charge a penalty if you miss a payment, make a late payment or breach your credit limit. Bear in mind, too, that most issuers reserve their best deals for people with a spotless credit record, so your application could be turned down.

    Find the right credit card

The best credit card for you depends on whether you will pay off your balance each month and how you intend to use the card. Smart Search will ask you a selection of questions to help determine which type of credit card best suits your needs, without leaving a mark on your credit file.

There are hundreds of different credit card deals but you can compare all the leading offers quickly and easily with Moneysupermarket’s online service. So, whether you want to switch a balance or you are looking for a 0% deal on purchases, we have all the information you need at the click of a mouse.

Moneysupermarket is a credit broker – this means we’ll show you products offered by lenders. We never take a fee from customers for this broking service. Instead we are usually paid a fee by the lenders – though the size of that payment doesn’t affect how we show products to customers.

    • Fees differ from those in the table above when you choose the integrated IRS e-file and e-pay option. View your options.
    • Not all IRS tax forms are eligible for payment by credit or debit card, and there are limits on how often you can make individual and business payments. Visit the frequency limit table by type of tax payment for details.

      • The fee is deductible for personal tax types as a miscellaneous itemized deduction. However, only those miscellaneous expenses that exceed 2 percent of the adjusted gross income can be deducted. For more information, refer to Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions.
      • For business tax types, the fee is a deductible business expense.
    • If you overpaid, IRS will refund it after the return is processed, excepting offsets or debt on your account.

How can i apply for a credit card

When looking to get a credit card, there are a variety of things you should consider. If you want a rewards card to use frequently, you might not mind paying a $100 or $200 annual fee. You should also consider the regular APR (as opposed to the introductory rate) and the interest rate. A good interest rate is dependent on how you will use the card. For example, a 20% interest rate is fine if you plan on paying off the balance every month.

It pays to ask these kinds of questions before you fill out the application form. Here are 9 questions you want answered before you sign on the dotted line.

The “very first question” the consumer should ask is, “Why am I applying for this card? Why do I need this card?” says Bruce McClary, media director for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions, a nonprofit affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling

Some positive reasons: The card has low or no fees, a lower interest rate or offers a rewards program that suits your spending habits. “It has to make sense, and it has to fit into your overall lifestyle,” McClary says.

Do you pay off your credit card balances every month? If so, “you don’t care what the interest rate is because you won’t pay any,” says Ric Edelman, author of “The Truth About Money.” “But you care about the (annual) fee,” he says.

If you run a balance, you want the lowest rate you can get, even if that comes with an annual fee.

One clue to your usage: “Look at your past history,” says Edelman. “Because what you’ve done before is what you will be doing.”

If you’re shopping for a card, chances are you’re comparing card terms. But if an issuer sends you an offer, it’s tempting to apply and see what you get.

“It’s really difficult to pick one (in isolation),” says Kelly Rogers, chief development officer for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County and adjunct faculty at Chapman University. “If someone just shows you one car, how do you know if it’s the right car for you?”

Her advice: Do a side-by-side comparison of several different cards before you apply.

Don’t be afraid to plug the card name, “complaints” and “customer service” into your favorite search engine. “I go through and see who has the least amount of complaints and issues,” says Rogers.

Some cards will give you a range of rates you could get, but often that window is pretty wide, says Nick Bourke, director of the Safe Credit Card Project at The Pew Charitable Trusts. Other cards may offer a specific rate (or terms) and either approve or reject you.

If you’re operating totally in the dark, you have another option: Apply by phone and push for an answer on your rate and credit line before the account is opened.

While there are no guarantees, sometimes you can get an answer, says Bourke.

“I’ve actually done this myself,” he says, admitting “you do have to go pretty far in the process.”

You may have to ask for the department that’s actually evaluating your application to get an answer, he says.

“The thing that you want to do is when you’re talking to the person on the phone taking your application is you want to push them as hard as you can to get your APR and credit line,” Bourke says. Then, once you have the information and before the account is opened in your name, “you can say yes or no at that point,” he says.

According to the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, if a card offers a lower interest rate during an introductory period, the promotional rate has to last at least six months. While that introductory offer may be appealing, the regular rate is what you’re really buying.

So find out when the introductory APR expires and what the new rate will be. You can find this information online in the terms and conditions for the card or you can ask a service representative.

Another smart question: How long is that grace period? “Some cards start charging interest immediately,” says Edelman. A card can have different grace periods for balance transfers and cash advances than it does for purchases.

You can find information about the grace period in the credit card offer, thanks to federal rules that took effect in 2010. Look for a summary table of rate and fee disclosures, which will include a statement that explains how to avoid paying interest.

If you’re getting the card for points or rewards, this is one you definitely need to ask, says Josh Frank, senior researcher with the Center for Responsible Lending. Some issuers will revoke rewards if you’re late with a payment by even one day, he says.

“A lot of times, the answer they will give you is that they can take away or reduce your rewards for any reason,” he says. While that’s true, the issuer will have a policy on revoking or reducing points, and that’s what you want to ask about, he says. Under what specific circumstances would they reduce or eliminate a customer’s points?

In most cases, “this is one the customer service agent should know the answer to,” he says.

Some card issuers use your purchase records to assess your ongoing creditworthiness.

That means if you suddenly use your card to purchase retread tires, pay for a session with a marriage counselor or make a purchase at a market on a sketchy side of town, you could see your APR climb or your credit limit fall, says Frank. If you see this practice as an invasion of privacy, ask beforehand if the issuer does this, he says.

How to phrase it: Can my transactions ever be used in rating my credit risk?

And that’s one question the customer service representative “might not know the answer to,” says Frank. “You might want to ask them to transfer you to the credit department manager.”

If you are guaranteeing a card account by co-signing for a college student, ask if you will be on the hook for the debt after the other party turns 21, says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney for the National Consumer Law Center.

Many times, “there is nothing to prevent the issuers from saying you’re going to be guaranteeing this card 15 years from now — long after junior is out of college,” she says.

In addition, find out exactly what has to be done to get you off the account. Are you free to complete those steps yourself? Or will you need the cooperation of someone who might not want you — and those charging privileges — to go away?

Federal regulations limit your liability for unauthorized credit card charges to $50 if you report it within two business days. The longer you wait, the more you may lose. Many issuers cap losses at zero dollars, provided you follow a few rules. So find out how the card would handle charges you didn’t make, says McClary.

Also, does the issuer monitor usage and shut down the card if it sees out-of-the-ordinary charges or spending locations? That feature can be great if you always use the card for the same types of purchases in the same geographic area, but cumbersome if you’re getting the card for travel.

While it sounds counterproductive, you want to ask some detailed questions on how the issuer will treat you if you run into financial problems, says McClary.

Will you lose points or benefits? Will you be hit with late fees or a penalty rate? Ask what those penalties are or look online at the terms and conditions for the card.

Some issuers have programs to slash interest temporarily for customers who get behind, he says. Others don’t. So find out ahead of time what kind of programs the issuer offers that will help you rehabilitate your account and restore your original terms, McClary says.

Ask about the “worst case scenario,” he says. “When do they consider an account to be charged off? And when do they send an account to a collection agency?”

“It may be a little tough to get a hold of that information because it might not be readily available at the customer service level,” says McClary. “You may have to punch it up a level.”

Your Experian Credit Report allows you to see the information lenders use when carrying out a credit check.

If you have a low score or there is room to improve, checking your credit report can help you see whether the information on it is correct and understand what could be affecting your score.
