A Closer Look at Local Storage

Any drive connected directly to your computer – be it inside or outside the case – is known as local storage, as opposed to remote storage, which you access via a network connection.

Internal drives. as the name implies, live inside your computer. They typically consist of either a spinning hard drive or solid-state flash storage. In most cases, internal drives are installed at the factory. Sir J.J. Thomson (1856 – 1940)

Sir Joseph John Thomson, often known as J.J. Thomson, was born on December 18, 1856, in Cheetham Hill, a suburb of Manchester, England, to Scottish parentage. His father, a bookseller, wanted him to be an engineer, but did not have the fee for J.J.’s apprenticeship. So Thomson entered Owens College (now the Victoria University) in Manchester. His professor of mathematics recognized his brilliance, and he was encouraged to apply for a scholarship at Trinity College in Cambridge. He was accepted in 1876 and became a Fellow in 1880, when he became Second Wrangler (a student who has completed the third year of mathematics with first-class honors. The highest-scoring student is named the Senior Wrangler, the second-highest is the Second Wrangler, etc.). He was chosen Master of Trinity in 1918 and guided the college until shortly before his death.

In 1884, Thomson became Cavendish Professor of Physics. In 1890, he married Rose Paget, and he had two children with her. One of his students was Ernest Rutherford, who would later succeed him in the post.

Thomson’s discovery of the electron began in 1895 with a series of experiments in the Cavendish Laboratory. Influenced by the work of James Clerk Maxwell land the discovery of the X-ray, Thomson deduced that cathode rays (produced by Crookes tube) exhibited a single charge-to-mass ratio e m and must be composed of a single type of negatively charged particle, which he called corpuscles. G. Johnstone Stoney had proposed the term electron earlier as a fixed quantum of electric charge in electrochemistry, but Thomson realized that it was also a subatomic particle, the first one to be discovered.

After further experiments on how cathode rays penetrate gases, Thomson hypothesized that we have in the cathode rays matter in a new state this matter being the substance from which all the chemical elements are built up. Thomson might be described as the man who first split the atom, and to a great extent, he made atom physics a modern science. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 and was knighted in 1908. His investigations into the action of electrostatic and magnetic fields in the nature of so-called anode rays or canal rays would eventually result in the invention of the mass spectrometer (then called a parabola spectrograph) by Francis Aston, a tool that allows the determination of the mass-to-charge ratio of ions and which has since become an ubiquitous research tool in chemistry.

Thomson was a gifted lecturer and teacher. His importance in physics is recognized almost as much for those he inspired as for his own experimental work. Seven Nobel Prizes were awarded to those who worked under him, including his son, Sir George Paget Thomson .

Prior to the outbreak of World War I, Thomson made another groundbreaking discovery: the isotope. He died on August 30, 1940, and was buried in Westminster Abbey, close to Isaac Newton.

The electron cloud model is used to describe the possible locations of electrons around the nucleus. The electron cloud model was developed by Erwin Schrodinger by using matematical equatiuons to describe the motion of electrons in atoms.

Bohr’s model depicts electrons in orbit around the nucleus. the electron cloud model shows orbitals within which an electron most likely is at any given time (the movement of electrons are random, and sometimes they get out of their orbital. i’m not making this up!). the electron cloud model is more accurate because electrons move closer and farther away from the nucleus, while the bohr model shows them at a given radius at all times.

this answer could be very complicated, but I’ll make it as simple as possible. because electrons move so fast and are so small, we don’t really have any reliable way of knowing exactly where an electron is at any precise moment. so scientists have simply determined that there is a certain perimeter around the atom where we are most likely to find an electron. this area is called the electron cloud. picture dozens and dozens of tiny electrons moving so fast in so many crazy directions around a nucleus that it all just becomes a blur of motion (a cloud, if you will). that’s why we call it the electron cloud.

The term “electron cloud” was coined by an American physicist named Richard Feynman. The electron cloud model is a visual representation of the possible locations of electrons in an atom. It is known that electrons are found on orbitals around the nucleus and this model visually allows us to picture the probable locations of the electrons around the nucleus.

There are things called group and period. the groups are basically used for the electron dot diagram. the period is used for the cloud model. there are 7 periods. for example, Sodium is in period 3, so sodium has 3 energy levels. draw a circle. the circle is your nucleus. then draw another circle around your nucleus. that is your first energy level. there are 2 electrons in the first level, 8 in the second and 18 in the third. for sodium the atomic number is 11. first draw your nucleus. then draw your first energy level. the first energy level has 2 electrons. then draw your second energy level. it had 8 electrons. so far your atomic number is 8. sodium has 3 energy levels because it’s in period 3. draw your third energy level with 1 electron. For sodium you only draw 1 electron because you already have 2 electrons on the first level and 8 on the second. the atomic number for sodium is 11 so it has to equal 11. that is why you only draw one electron on the third energy level. 8+2+1=11. it is the same number as your atomic number. and there you have your electron cloud model.

Answer It is hard to give credit to one single person. Here are some of the important people and their discoveries that led up to this model: Ernest Rutherford found that the atom is mostly empty space with a very small but heavy nucleus in the center. Niels Bohr had a model of atomic structure in which electrons orbited the nucleus in a circular orbit — this was wrong (the orbits are not circular at all), but he had the idea that electrons were moving around the nucleus, which is true. Werner Heisenberg was really the person that determined that the only way to describe the location of electrons is as a probability distribution, and this led to the idea of an “electron cloud” where you can only talk about the relative probability of find an electron in a certain volume. This is really what quantum mechanics is all about! Other important people involved in the development of quantum mechanics were Erwin Schrodinger and Louis de Broglie, among others. Many many more scientists also contributed to the cloud model.

The short answer is that it’s somewhere at the other end of your internet connection a place where you can access apps and services, and where your data can be stored securely. The cloud is a big deal for three reasons:

History of Cloud Computing

The Internet has its roots in the 1960s, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that it had any relevance for businesses. The World Wide Web was born in 1991, and in 1993 a web browser called Mosaic was released that allowed users to view web pages that included graphics as well as text. This heralded the first company web sites and not surprisingly, most of these belonged to companies involved in computing and technology.

As Internet connections got faster and more reliable, a new type of company called an Application Service Provider or ASP started to appear. ASPs took existing business applications and ran them for their customers. The ASP would buy the computing hardware and keeping the application running, and the customer would pay a monthly fee to access it over the Internet.

But it wasn’t until right at the end of the 1990s that cloud computing as we know it today appeared. That’s when salesforce.com introduced its own multi-tenant application which was specifically designed:

  • to run in the cloud ;
  • to be accessed over the Internet from a web browser;
  • to be used by large numbers of customers simultaneously at low cost.

Since then the cloud has grown and grown: in 2013 worldwide spending on cloud servicets ran to an estimated $47 billion. And that’s set to more than double to over $108 billion by 2017 as companies invest in cloud services as the foundation for new, competitive offerings.

How cloud computing works

With a cloud app, you just open a browser, log in, and start working.

That means a field sales representative using cloud-based CRM can get all the information they need from their mobile device. Contact notes can be updated in real time so they are always fresh and complete and available to others no more waiting to get back to the office to type it in. And sales managers know exactly which deals will close and when, from their desktop machines in their offices, or their tablets or phones when they are out and about.

And this all happens without any hardware to buy and manage, or software to install and update.     So when is direct-attached storage a better solution than a storage area network or network-attached storage? Clearly if cost is an issue, DAS offers the best price point. You should also consider DAS if advanced features such as remote replication or high performance/scalability aren’t required in your virtual environment. For example, DAS combined with an internal RAID card used in a branch location where only one physical server is deployed, would be a great solution.

    Networked-attached storage provides connectivity to the virtual server through a TCP/IP connection and storage access is provided at the file level. NAS pros and cons include:

    • NAS is shareable. Resources may be shared by multiple ESX deployments. This is a key benefit when using clustered virtual environments and features such as VMotion.
    • NAS is scalable in terms of capacity and performance. For larger virtual deployments, performance becomes a big issue. The concentration of I/O into a small number of LUNs can potentially result in throughput bottlenecks. This is especially likely with advanced features of NAS.

    Storage area networks provide connectivity to the virtual server using either the Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI protocols. SAN storage has the following pros and cons:

    • SAN storage is sharable. Resources may be easily shared between multiple virtual server hardware devices. This is important in clustered virtual server environments.
    • SANs are highly scalable, both from a capacity and performance perspective. For large deployments of virtual servers, scalability is extremely important and the whole premise of SAN is to provide high levels of scale.
    • SAN storage provides synchronous replication. Synchronous replication isn’t typically available on NAS implementations, and for many environments, this may be a key requirement for a disaster recovery strategy.
    • SAN environments are highly resilient. SAN environments are well equipped with dual fabrics, HBAs and highly available storage arrays.

    What type of storage best fits your virtual environment?

    Everyone has different needs and requirements for their virtual environments. Choose DAS if cost is an issue, your virtual environment is small and if your environment doesn’t require advanced features like data replication. Choose NAS or SAN if you are building large-scale virtual environments. NAS is the better option if you require the ability to clone large numbers of virtual hosts. However, SAN will be a better fit if you require the highest levels of availability and resiliency. Whichever platform you choose, we can expect virtual servers to form a major part of all IT deployments in the future.

    Cloud Technology Systems, Inc. contracted an independent researcher to sift through the seemingly endless credit card offers to narrow the search down to the top five. The criterion that was used ranges from the requirement of an employment check to more obvious points such as fees.

    One of the Cards that made the top five is a card that doesn’t require a credit check but the consumer is limited to where they can use the card. Many of these store cards are lenient when it comes to consumer approve but can carry restrictions that consumers dislike.

    These unsecured credit cards can have an APR as high as 30 percent along with an annual fee or a monthly fee. High fees prevented many of the credit cards for bad credit from being named in the top five.

    Since unsecured cards are a riskier card for the credit card issuer, they make up the risk by charging more fees than many of the secured credit cards that are on the market today. Another way they reduce the risk of nonpayment is by requiring that the credit card monthly payment is automatically debited from the consumer s account.

    None of the prepaid cards that are available in the marketplace made the list of the top five cards due to the fact that they do not report to any of the three major credit bureaus; thus they do not help rebuild your credit which is the goal of most consumers that are looking for a credit card when they have less than perfect credit.

    Azure surpasses AWS as the public cloud of choice

    A new survey of IT professionals shows Microsoft Azure has overtaken Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the public cloud provider of choice, although there is considerable overlap.

    The survey was commissioned by Sumo Logic, a data analytics provider, and was performed by UBM Research. It surveyed 230 IT professionals from companies with 500 or more employees.

    The survey found 80 percent of enterprises currently use or plan to use at least one public cloud provider, if not more. And given the figures, a large number are clearly using more than one. Around two-thirds (66 percent) of respondents said they use Azure while 55 percent said they use AWS. Salesforce App cloud comes in third at 28 percent, IBM fourth at 23 percent and Google is at 20 percent.

    More than half of the Azure users were from enterprises with more than 10,000 employees, which suggests that Microsoft’s cloud is particularly popular with large enterprises, according to the survey.

    The result is notable because this is the first survey to put Azure ahead of AWS. All other past surveys have always found AWS to be the leader in the public cloud provider market. Now 230 IT pros does not a major trend make, but it could be the first sign that Microsoft has taken the lead in this market. Or it could be an aberration.

    Additionally, the survey found that 67 percent of those surveyed are using software-as-a-service (SaaS), about four out of 10 are using infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and/or platform-as-a-service (PaaS). Also growing in popularity is DevOps, the new means of application development, which goes hand-in-hand with cloud use. UBM found 68 percent of those surveyed either plan to adopt DevOps or already have.

    DevOps is meant to be a faster means of writing and deploying new applications, and that goes with the findings of the survey that 42 percent of respondents said they are deploying apps more frequently than in the past, while only 8 percent of respondents said they were deploying apps less frequently than in previous years.

    “Trends such as cloud computing and DevOps are helping companies become more flexible and responsive to market conditions. However, as cloud computing becomes standard in IT organizations, concerns about security persist,” said Amy Doherty, research director for UBM Technology in a statement.

    Security remains the top concern of companies embracing the cloud. When asked about the biggest challenges related the cloud, security received the most votes (27 percent) from respondents. While the majority of those surveyed (55 percent) said public cloud services are more secure than they used to be, only 6 percent describe the security of public cloud as “excellent.”

    Other sore spots for cloud adopters are migrating applications and data to the cloud (15 percent), obtaining a unified view of cloud and traditional IT infrastructure (8 percent) and managing cloud-based apps and operations (7 percent).

Provides storage for applications and workloads that require long-term retention at the lowest price in the industry, with predictable SLAs for data retrieval. As a deep cloud archive, Archive Storage is suited for infrequently accessed large-scale data sets, such as corporate records, scientific archives, cultural preservation content, and digital film masters.
    • Oracle Storage Cloud Service File Storage. Provides file-based NFS v4 network protocol access to both Object Storage and Archive Storage tiers in Oracle Storage Cloud Service. The on-premises software appliance acts as a storage gateway from the customers data center to the cloud and the optimized machine image enables cloud-based virtual machine instances to operate on shared data sets. The extensibility of the File Storage offering allows for easy integration with other Oracle and third-party storage appliances.

    It is often joked that if you ask five people to define cloud computing, you will get ten different definitions. Generally speaking, we seem to want to overcomplicate cloud computing and what the cloud means in real life. While in some cases, there can be complex technologies involved behind the scenes, there is nothing inherently complex about cloud computing.

    In fact, the technology behind cloud computing is by and large the easy part. Frankly, the hardest part of cloud computing is the people. The politics of migrating from legacy platforms to the cloud is inherently complicated because the adoption of cloud computing affects the way many people not just IT professionals do their jobs. Over time, cloud computing might drastically change some roles so that they are no longer recognizable from their current form, or even potentially eliminate some jobs entirely. Thus, the human-economic implications of adopting and migrating to cloud computing platforms and processes should not be taken lightly.

    There are also, of course, countless benefits stemming from the adoption of cloud computing, both in the short term and the longer term. Many benefits of cloud computing in the corporate arena are purely financial, while other network externalities relating to cloud computing will have much broader positive effects. The ubiquity of free or inexpensive computing accessed through the cloud is already impacting both communications in First World and established economies, and research and development, agriculture, and banking in Third World and emerging economies.

    Therefore, it is important for decision makers to understand the impact of cloud computing both from a financial and from a sociological standpoint. This understanding begins with a clear definition of cloud computing.

    Cloud Computing Defined

    Cloud computing is not one single technology, nor is it one single architecture. Cloud computing is essentially the next phase of innovation and adoption of a platform for computing, networking, and storage technologies designed to provide rapid time to market and drastic cost reductions. (We talk more about adoption and innovation cycles in the scope of economic development in Chapter 4, The Cloud Economy The Human-Economic Impact of Cloud Computing. )

    There have been both incremental and exponential advances made in computing, networking, and storage over the last several years, but only recently have these advancements coupled with the financial drivers related to economic retraction and recession reached a tipping point, creating a major market shift toward cloud adoption.

    The business workflows (the rules and processes behind business functions like accounts payable and accounts receivable) in use in corporations today are fairly commonplace. With the exception of relatively recent changes required to support regulatory compliance Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), for example most software functions required to pay bills, make payroll, process purchase orders, and so on have remained largely unchanged for many years.

    Similarly, the underlying technologies of cloud computing have been in use in some form or another for decades. Virtualization, for example arguably the biggest technology driver behind cloud computing is almost 40 years old. Virtualization the logical abstraction of hardware through a layer of software has been in use since the mainframe era. 1 Just as server and storage vendors have been using different types of virtualization for nearly four decades, virtualization has become equally commonplace in the corporate network: It would be almost impossible to find a LAN today that does not use VLAN functionality.

    In the same way that memory and network virtualization have standardized over time, server virtualization solutions such as those offered by Microsoft, VMware, Parallels, and Xen and the virtual machine, or VM, have become the fundamental building blocks of the cloud.

    Over the last few decades, the concept of a computer and its role in corporate and academic environments have changed very little, while the physical, tangible reality of the computer has changed greatly: Processing power has more than doubled every two years while the physical footprint of a computer has dramatically decreased (think mainframe versus handheld). 2

    Moore s Law aside, at its most basic level, the CPU takes I/O and writes it to RAM and/or to a hard drive. This simple function allows applications to create, process, and save mission-critical data. Radically increased speed and performance, however, means that this function can be performed faster than ever before and at massive scale. Additionally, new innovations and enhancements to these existing technology paradigms (hypervisor-bypass and Cisco Extended Memory Technology, for example) are changing our concepts of what a computer is and does. (Where should massive amounts of data reside during processing? What functions should the network interface card perform?) This material and functional evolution, coupled with economic and business drivers, are spurring a dramatic market shift toward the cloud and the anticipated creation and growth of many new markets.

    While it is fair to say that what is truly new about the cloud is the use of innovative and interrelated technologies to solve complex business problems in novel ways, that is not the whole story. Perhaps what is most promising about cloud computing, aside from the breadth of solutions currently available and the functionality and scalability of new and emerging platforms, is the massive potential for future products and solutions developed in and for the cloud. The untapped potential of the cloud and the externalities stemming from consumer and corporate adoption of cloud computing can create significant benefits for both developed and underdeveloped economies.

    With a basic understanding of the technology and market drivers behind cloud computing, it is appropriate to move forward with a deeper discussion of what cloud computing means in real life. To do this, we turn to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

    Cloud Services May Replace EHR Portals

    EHR integration with Box suggests a trend: cloud services for care coordination and one-stop patient record access.

    Patient portals attached to EHRs are spreading rapidly. mainly because of the Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirement that providers share records electronically with patients. According to a new Frost Sullivan report. 50 percent of hospitals and 40 percent of ambulatory physician practices already have such portals. But it’s unclear whether this kind of patient portal has the functionality required in the long run for patient engagement and collaboration among unrelated providers.

    One recent development shows the possibility of an alternative path. The cloud-based file-sharing vendor Box announced that a link to its service has been embedded in the cloud EHRs of Dr. Chrono and CareCloud. Physicians using these EHR systems can easily transfer patient records to Box, where patients can securely download them or transfer them to other providers.

    Theoretically, if Box or some other cloud service provider persuaded enough EHR vendors to sign on, patients with multiple providers could download and aggregate all their records in one place. Instead, they must now access their records on multiple portals attached to the EHRs of different practices and hospitals. According to a recent KLAS report. just 14 percent of EHR-tethered portals included information from health information exchanges (HIEs), and 11 percent included data from other EHRs.

    Albert Santalo, president and CEO of CareCloud, told us that it decided to embed Box because it is ubiquitous and easy to use. “While CareCloud also has the ability to share records through our own portal, we feel that Box is a more widely used platform.” Also, patients want to download records from multiple providers. “Sometimes they want to go beyond a patient portal, so Box facilitates that.”

    Santalo believes that patients should be able to access all of their records in one place. “Patients should be in control of their records, it should be easy to get to, and it should be a byproduct of what the doctor does. The patient shouldn’t have to do a lot of work to populate their personal health records. That’s why other initiatives have failed, like Google Health and Microsoft HealthVault. They put too much burden on the patient.”

    Microsoft, which still operates HealthVault. has long tried to get providers to send patient records to HealthVault, so they can be stored in patient-controlled personal health records (PHRs). Its website says “a growing list of labs, pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics” will send patient records to HealthVault upon request, but it hasn’t made any big announcements about this in years.

    The Meaningful Use regulations allow providers to send records to PHRs to meet the record-sharing requirement. So Microsoft has applied for certification of HealthVault as EHR technology that can be used to show Meaningful Use in Stage 2. Missy Krasner, managing director of health and life sciences for Box, said it is considering whether to seek Meaningful Use certification.

    However, Femi Ladega, global industry technologist for healthcare and life sciences at the consulting and research firm CSC, told us the ability to help providers achieve Meaningful Use is secondary to the other advantages of a cloud-based patient portal. The care delivery model is shifting toward “a shared accountability with the patient,” and this requires the capability to create two-way online communications between patients and all their providers.

    To do that, he said, providers must create an infrastructure that goes beyond the EHR of an individual practice or hospital. “A health information exchange may be part of that infrastructure, and its dataset may be part of that ecosystem. But you need to pull data together from multiple sources.”

    A cloud-based portal will be needed to serve as a central point for patients to aggregate their medical records and forward them to their providers. However, such a portal must be able to “provide the right infrastructure for the associated data governance while assuring the data can be relied on and trusted.” The portal also must show where each piece of information came from and enable providers to understand the context of the data “to drive the right interventions.”

    This kind of cloud-based portal can co-exist with EHR-related portals, Ladega said, but it must be able to give patients all the information they need to manage their own conditions, including educational materials, care alerts, and other self-management tools. And it must provide the capability for bilateral communications between patients and providers across care settings.

    “That s why you need an ecosystem that enables effective data sharing, underpinned by this infrastructure that allows you to trust the information that is being shared and allows you to act effectively on it,” he said.

    Analysis: Businesses are risking huge fines if they don t get cloud security right.

    It s safe to say that moving to the cloud is now a well trodden path that many businesses have undertaken. The benefits of agility, speed and often reduced costs are well reported and so are the barriers to adoption.

    Despite its benefits, cloud remains burdened by the need to prove its security credentials at every corner. When the latest updates are released by vendors there is almost always a paragraph or two saved to talk about how security is being tackled.
    Security remains the number one problem for cloud and it isn t going away.

    A recently report from Intel Security outlined the issues surrounding public and private cloud. The global report found that only 15% of UK respondents believe senior management in their organisation totally understands the risks of storing data in the public cloud. A statistic that ranks the UK as having the lowest awareness levels for any of the countries involved in the report.

    This is just one of the issues related to cloud security, and while 77% now have more trust in the cloud than they did a year ago, many (72%) still have concerns about compliance and only 13% completely trust public cloud to secure sensitive data.

    Even though more than one in five has concerns around using SaaS when it comes to data security, it hasn t stopped investment. The report found that 60% are planning to invest in the area, suggesting that the benefits far outweigh the concerns.

    Despite this finding, there are blind spots, for example only 23% of enterprises are unaware of data breaches with their cloud service provider, while a lack of visibility into cloud usage due to shadow IT is a concern for 58% of IT departments surveyed in Intel s Orchestrating Security in the Cloud report.

    Jim Reavis, CEO of the Cloud Security Alliance said: Security vendors and cloud providers must arm customers with education and tools, and cultivate strong relationships built on trust, in order to continue the adoption of cloud computing platforms. Only then can we completely benefit from the advantages of the cloud.

    Generally speaking, cloud vendors are tackling this problem head on, as much as they innovate with new services to enable businesses to do more, they are also placing a heavy emphasis on security and meeting regulations.

    Take Box for example, the company recently revealed Box Zones which are designed to help businesses to centralise their content and address local data storage requirements.

    Basically the company is helping businesses to meet the requirements of data storage regulations by leveraging Amazon Web Services and IBM Cloud data centres.

    The issue of data location is particularly common in Europe where a patchwork of regulations has been difficult to overcome.

    These problems are part of an ever evolving landscape that will include Privacy Shield. should it ever be fully agree upon, and the EU General Data Protection Regulation when it comes into force in 2018.

    Regulations like these won t stop the concerns related to cloud security, if anything they may add to the complexity. The GDPR document is 204 pages and it covers any organisation that collects, stores, and processes data on individuals of the EU.

    Major aspects of the regulation include fines of up to 4% of global turnover or 20 million Euros, whichever is higher, and the local supervisory authority must be informed within 72 hours of any data loss, with users informed as soon as possible.

    The reason for mentioning this is because many organisations simply don t know where their data is and cloud has been part of that problem. Due to problems with poorly executed data management policies, this has resulted in data being replicated and moved to numerous different locations.

    Intel Security s research mentioned earlier highlighted that shadow IT is a major concern, which raises the question that if IT doesn t know what is even running in their premise then how can they control the data and the security of it?

    Nigel Hawthorn, director, EMEA marketing, Skyhigh Networks told CBR: One of the biggest problems with this and any other privacy law is where all your data is today, If you re a big organisation you have databases all over the place that are not linked that have information on your customers in multiple places.

    With GDPR just around the corner and data security and location a big issue due to cloud and shadow IT, this is likely to be something that hinders adoption until the problem can be solved.

    Cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services are going after big US banks as potential customers as they look to expand into an area which has been slow in comparison to adopt cloud technology.

    The problem is the extremely high demands for meeting security and regulation requirements, which is one of the reasons why banks in the past have chosen to build their own infrastructure.

    Although AWS has been making in-roads into this area, it is clear that security remains a big concern.

    The on-premise cloud deployment or private cloud model is one solution that may help to increase adoption. A technology such as OpenStack has for example been looked at increasingly by businesses in highly regulated sectors as a path to cloud. In the past year OpenStack has been deployed by the likes of HMRC and the European Commission.

    The deal with HMRC for example will see DataCentred provide an OpenStack public cloud that will support the multi-channel digital tax platform.

    A driving force behind these kinds of deployments has to be attributed to the need to meet regulatory demands.

    As security remains a concern for all industries, the necessity for vendors to continuously improve their cloud security image will be vitally important.

    The strategies of both vendors and businesses will, for a long time, remain heavily impacted by the need to meet security and regulatory requirements.

    Previously, we have explained how cloud works. Basically, programs that are needed to run a certain application are now more popularly located on a remote machine, owned by another company. This is done in order not to lose on the quality performance due to processing power of your own computer, to save money on IT support, and yet remain advantageous on the market. These computers that run the applications, store the data, and use a server system, are basically what we call the cloud .

    Where Do I Pull the Switch: Cloud Location

    When we talk about public cloud. we mean that the whole computing infrastructure is located on the premises of a cloud computing company that offers the cloud service. The location remains, thus, separate from the customer and he has no physical control over the infrastructure.

    As public clouds use shared resources, they do excel mostly in performance, but are also most vulnerable to various attacks.

    Private cloud means using a cloud infrastructure (network) solely by one customer/organization. It is not shared with others, yet it is remotely located. If the cloud is externally hosted. The companies have an option of choosing an on-premise private cloud as well, which is more expensive, but they do have a physical control over the infrastructure.

    Hybrid cloud. of course, means, using both private and public clouds, depending on their purpose.

    For example, public cloud can be used to interact with customers, while keeping their data secured through a private cloud.

    Community cloud implies an infrastructure that is shared between organizations, usually with the shared data and data management concerns. For example, a community cloud can belong to a government of a single country. Community clouds can be located both on and off the premises.

    What Can I Do With It: Cloud Service

    The most popular services of the cloud are that of either infrastructure. platform. software. or storage .

    As explained before, the most common cloud service is that one offering data storage disks and virtual servers, i.e. infrastructure. Examples of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) companies are Amazon, Rackspace, Flexiscale.

    If the cloud offers a development platform, and this includes operating system, programming language execution environment, database, and web server, the model is known as Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), examples of which are Google App Engine. Microsoft Azure, Salesforce. Operating system can be frequently upgraded and developed with PaaS, services can be obtained from diverse sources, and programming can be worked in teams (geographically distributed).

    Cloud Technology Systems, Inc. contracted an independent researcher to sift through the seemingly endless credit card offers to narrow the search down to the top five. The criterion that was used ranges from the requirement of an employment check to more obvious points such as fees.

    One of the Cards that made the top five is a card that doesn’t require a credit check but the consumer is limited to where they can use the card. Many of these store cards are lenient when it comes to consumer approve but can carry restrictions that consumers dislike.

    These unsecured credit cards can have an APR as high as 30 percent along with an annual fee or a monthly fee. High fees prevented many of the credit cards for bad credit from being named in the top five.

    Since unsecured cards are a riskier card for the credit card issuer, they make up the risk by charging more fees than many of the secured credit cards that are on the market today. Another way they reduce the risk of nonpayment is by requiring that the credit card monthly payment is automatically debited from the consumer s account.

    None of the prepaid cards that are available in the marketplace made the list of the top five cards due to the fact that they do not report to any of the three major credit bureaus; thus they do not help rebuild your credit which is the goal of most consumers that are looking for a credit card when they have less than perfect credit.

    DAM involves the creation of an archive. the development of an infrastructure to preserve and manage digital assets and a search functionality that allows end users to identify, locate and retrieve an asset. At its simplest, a DAM is a set of database records. Each database record contains metadata explaining the name of the file, its format and information about its content and usage. Digital asset management software can be used to create and manage the database and help the company to store rich media in a cost-effective manner.

    What is a digital asset?

    The asset being managed is stored in a digital format and is detailed by its metadata. The metadata can describe the asset content, the means of encoding, ownership, and rights of access.

    Types of digital asset management

    Assessing Security in the Cloud

    While some organizations still aren’t ready to embrace cloud computing, 80% of them indicate a propensity to increase investments in cloud computing in years to come, according to the Gartner global cloud adoption survey in 2014. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and software as a service (SaaS) are the most widely used cloud services.

    The challenge for existing cloud users and those considering adoption is that there is not one single cloud security approach, according to Ruggero Contu. research director at Gartner, in his session, Security in the Cloud: Consider Different Risks and Opportunities at the Gartner Security Risk Management Summit. Each cloud model requires a separate strategy. Whether you embrace it or not, you need to understand the reality and shadow IT. Security, whether you like it or not, must cater to the cloud security problem, he said.

    IaaS: You’re in charge
    With IaaS, the security professional is in charge. The IaaS provider covers network and hypervisor security but the review of implementation details is on the organization’s security team. Consider, who owns security, IaaS, you or both parties?

    SaaS: Beware of Apps
    For SaaS, the provider usually controls security yet watch out for application security, which is a major vulnerability and the area of concern. The biggest breaches aren’t from the SaaS provider but from the applications that were exploited by hackers. Security professional should consider what types of applications their employees access and whether they can recover data. Also, consider the inappropriate access by authorized user and unauthorized outsider.

    PaaS: Security and availability are critical
    For Platform as a Service (PaaS ), data security and system availability are critical issues. PaaS allows developers to focus on coding, but in an outsourced environment risks exist. While encryption is an option, there are issues with key management and impact to performance.

    Overall, Mr. Contu recommends that it’s important to investigate IaaS providers audit test claims and evaluate against the organization’s specific security needs. For SaaS, analyze the types of SaaS applications being used, and identify the risk associated with this usage. Also, have a sound IAM strategy in place and note that Identity as a Service (IDaaS) is in growing demand. Strike the right balance to get the best of what cloud provides but ultimately security is the responsibility of the subscriber. They cannot, and should not ever fully delegate that responsibility.

    What Is Dental Practice Management Software?

    Dentists have a unique challenge in the medical community. Most appointments are scheduled several months ahead of time and require coordinating patient schedules and information with two different types of practitioners: dentist and hygienist.

    Often, routine visits turn into more in-depth procedures, and the ability to manage these changes and the associated information can have a big impact on the time spent caring for your patient, and the quality of care you provide. These challenges make it that much more important to use dental software that manages patient data, images and practice information.

    Although the terms dental electronic medical records (EMR), dental electronic health records (EHR) and electronic dental records (EDR) can have different meanings, the terms are often used interchangeably. While there may be nuanced differences, generally all three terms refer to software that manages the charting and management of a patient’s clinical information.

    As a rule, effective dental office software will have: templates specifically designed for dental practices; tooth and gum graphics; and an ability to import and organize X-rays. They ll also have features to deal with patient scheduling, billing and coding support, patient education modules, and often a Web portal for patients, all of which maximize the efficiency of the front and back office staff.

    Common Features of Dental Practice Management Software

    As you search for dental practice management software, consider the following key features and functionality:

    Graphical tooth charting

    Dentist software should have a simple graphical depiction of each tooth and gum that makes it easy to identify caries, fillings, veneers, crowns, missing teeth, gum problems and any other relevant issue. Any changes made to text-based templates should be reflected in the graphical tooth chart, and vice versa.

    Text-based templates should be present for all common procedures, and the EDR should let you add a template quickly in the event that an emergency procedure is required. Commonly used templates might include routine exams, fillings, root canals, crowns, tooth extraction or any number of customizable templates.

    The idea here is to import X-rays and other digital images, immediately connecting them to the patient, and present them in a way that makes sense to the dentist (i.e. the same order as the graphical tooth chart). Often dental imaging software programs also offer advanced features like measuring a tooth or identifying a particular region of interest, too. Although standalone imaging software does exist, combining it with the EDR software facilitates integration, which is why most vendors offer both capabilities as a combined unit.

    Look for something that simplifies scheduling by coordinating dentist, hygienist and patient schedules and that doesn t require back office staff to fast forward through six calendar months every time they need to book a patient out.

    Dental billing and insurance

    Dental billing software helps the practice in maximizing revenues through effective coding support, which simplifies billing as much as possible. As part of a dental EMR, it will likely include only those codes needed or used by dentists and can help group procedures that commonly occur together.

    Allows patients to fill out their dental history, change their contact information or even receive or send bills, X-rays and other documents from the comfort of their home, saving practice time and improving office efficiency.

    How Is Dental Software Priced?

    Although exceptions exist, you’ll typically find dental software priced in one of two ways: a subscription fee paid every month or year, or a perpetual license fee paid once, up front.

    Pricing model tends to correspond with how the software is deployed: on-premise or in the cloud. On-premise deployment means the software is installed on your own local servers. Cloud-based deployment, on the other hand, means the software is hosted online, or “in the cloud.” You use an Internet connection to access the software via web browser.

    Traditionally, on-premise deployments are priced using the perpetual license model. However, today you’ll find more and more on-premise products offering subscription pricing models. Cloud-based software is generally priced using a subscription model, wherein users pay a monthly or annual fee per user.

    Perpetual licence pricing comes with a steeper price tag up front, but low recurring monthly or annual costs (e.g. for maintenance or support). Subscription pricing, on the other hand, has a lower up-front investment, but relatively higher recurring costs, since you’re paying the subscription fees each month or year.

    The costs of on-premise and subscription models tend to converge over time, so the pricing model you choose depends largely on whether you prefer one large fee up front, or smaller fees broken out over time. Check out our total cost of ownership calculator to see how this works.

    ARRA Meaningful Use for Dentists

    Many dentists looking for dental management software are wondering if they re eligible for the financial incentives provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Although the Medicare incentives generally do not apply (since Medicare doesn t cover most dental procedures), dentists whose patient volume is at least 30 percent Medicaid can receive the Medicaid incentive, provided they adopt a certified electronic health record (EHR) product.

    Since there currently are no certification standards for EDRs, a dentist looking to meet these requirements would have to adopt a dental EHR, which could then interface with a dedicated EDR if that s your preferred tool.

    Although this may seem cumbersome, the best dental software programs have been designed to integrate with EHRs specifically to fulfill this need, and it could qualify you for almost $70,000 in incentives over six years.

    Recent Events You Should Know About

    LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. acquires Apteryx Inc. In January 2017, dental diagnostic imaging company LED Medical Diagnostics announced it will buy Apteryx, which produces software that digitizes dental images. The $10.25 million deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2017.

    CareCredit partners with Henry Schein Financial Services. In January 2017, dental software and supplies vendor Henry Schein launched a multiyear agreement with CareCredit, a credit card provider specifically for patients to cover their health-related expenses. Henry Schein s dental practice management software programs, Dentrix and Easy Dental, added features to integrate with CareCredit s patient financing services.

    Formlabs offers 3-D printer for dentists. In October 2016, Formalbs Inc. introduced the Form 2, a desktop 3D printer designed to help dental professionals create study models from intraoral scans, produce surgical guides with implant planning software and print bone models.

    So far in this 31 part series that is 31 Days of Servers (VMs) in the Cloud we have learned much about what is Windows Azure is and what it can do. But, how much does it cost? In this edition of the series we will answer that question and more.

    Free is great but then what?

    The simple answer to how much Windows Azure costs to get started is easy. It is FREE! It is free to setup a Windows Azure Account that gives you access to a trial account that you can use for testing. This trail account can also give you reports about your server usage if you go ahead and deploy your servers, applications and websites. Armed with this data, you will know exactly how much your services will cost. However, if you want to get a good idea of how much your servers will cost before you actually deploy, you can fairly easily create an estimate. Before diving into the details, let me make sure you understand some preliminary background about pricing. Once you do setup this FREE account, you CAN convert it and all the machines on it to a pay account. However, this is a MANUAL process. Even though Microsoft collects your credit card information when you setup the account, it is a FREE account and will not flip to a pay account automatically. That means, when your trial is up, your services will no longer be available. You will still be able to login to and access your account, but any services you have running will be shut down until you do flip it to a fee based account. Once you do convert your account to a pay account there is no upfront costs and you only pay for what you use!

    Machine Size

    First when you deploy a server in the cloud using Windows Azure. you have many options for the server as Tommy Patterson outlined in his most excellent post Supported Virtual Machine Operating Systems in the Microsoft Cloud (Part 3 of 31). When you create a Windows machine, you are not charged based on the OS. Hence, if you are installing, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012. Linux or other, the cost of the OS will not cost you more. The size of the machine does matter. Basically, you need to determine what size machine you want to deploy. Your options are:

    1. Extra Small (Shared core, 768 MB memory)
    2. Small (1 core, 1.75 GB memory)
    3. Medium (2 cores, 3.5 GB memory)
    4. Large (4 cores, 7 GB memory)
    5. Extra Large (8 cores, 14 GB memory)

    Hopefully, as an IT Professional, you have some idea of what kind of resources your server or website might need. If you are not sure, I recommend you start small and work your way up as needed. One great feature of the cloud is you can scale up very easily. However, what you chose in the “Size” field when you create the machine is one of the main things that drives the price of a machine.

    There are different payment and billing options available:

    There are many different services and many different elements within those services that are billed in Windows Azure. There are so many options and variables, it could be difficult to figure out the cost in advance if we did not have a great tool to do it for us. Microsoft created the Windows Azure Calculator .

    When you go to the calculator. you will see that it has many different starting points: web sites, virtual machines, mobile services, cloud services, data management full calculator. Each one of these sections allows you to individually calculate the cost for those services/servers. The “full calculator” is the same thing but it allows you to configure many services on the same page. However, the full calculator does not allow you to be as granular on your selection of services.

    Web sites

    Web sites has three tabs; Free, Shared and Reserved. The Free tab does not give you prices (because everything is free). The shared tab gives you prices based on shared resources. Reserved gives you the prices for dedicated resources. The different services that are available are SQL Database, Bandwidth and Support. Slide the slider bar to the right of the option you want to increase to a higher quantity. The default quantity for all items is zero when you open the page.

    move the slider bar to select the amount of the individual services you think you will need. The calculator will then tell you how much it will cost.

    The slider bar technology for other services work the exact same way. Just move the slider to the quantity/size you think you need to get a price estimate.

    Virtual Machines

    The calculator for Virtual Machines allows you to choose Windows Virtual Machines, Linux Virtual Machines, Storage (Geo Redundant), Bandwidth and Support. As you can see from the diagram, I configured:

    • One small windows virtual machine <57.60>
    • One small Linux Virtual Machine <57.60>
    • 700gb of Storage
    • 100gb of Bandwidth

    Both servers with the storage and bandwidth based on pay-as-you go pricing would cost me approximately 193.10 per month.

    Need more savings?

    When you start using cloud services you have to start thinking differently about your services. Cloud services are pay for what you use. Just like other “utility” type services it is best to turn off what you are not using. Most people would not leave their gas stove on if they were not cooking because that would just waste gas. Frugal people do not generally leave their TV’s, lights, toasters and other electric appliances on when they are not using them, it is wise to not leave your servers and services on when you are not using them. If you have three servers and you get by with only one, delete the other two. You can always bring the others back up when they are needed. If you have servers/services turned on they are likely doing some kind of work (it is the nature of servers) so turn them off to minimize bandwidth, CPU cycles, storage needs, etc. When you no longer need the server, download it and remove it so you can cut that cost too.

    Brief history of cloud computing

    The concept of cloud computing has its origins in the 1950s with the development of the microchip and the mainframe computer. Users were able to access the computer through client or terminal computers and, to promote efficient use of Central Processing Unit (CPU) resources, the practice of multitenancy and time-sharing evolved. From the 1960s to the late 1990s, improvements to time-sharing models, server balancing and remote access (VPN) laid the groundwork for what would come during the dot-com boom in the early 2000s.

    The rapid development of computing power and the advent of the internet during the 1990s paved the way for major developments in cloud computing. Early pioneers like Google, Amazon and Salesforce helped to demonstrate the ability of the cloud to deliver computing power without hardware and locally installed software. Since the mid-2000s, the cloud computing industry has grown exponentially, and is predicted to become a $210B industry by 2016 .

    8 Reasons to Fear Cloud Computing

    By 2014, cloud computing is expected to become a $150 billion industry. And for good reason whether users are on a desktop computer or mobile device, the cloud provides instant access to data anytime, anywhere there is an Internet connection.

    For businesses, cloud computing also offers myriad benefits, such as scalable storage for files, applications and other types of data; improved collaboration regardless of team members locations; and saved time and money by eliminating the need to build a costly data center and hire an IT team to manage it.

    Most businesses, however, have one major concern when it comes to cloud computing: Exactly how safe is the cloud? Although most reputable cloud providers have top-of-the-line security to protect users data, experts say there is no such thing as a completely safe cloud system.

    From security holes to support issues, below are eight risks all users take when migrating to and storing their data in the cloud.

    1. Someone else is looking after your data

    Unlike a data center. which is run by an in-house IT department. the cloud is an off-premise system in which users outsource their data needs to a third party provider. The provider does everything from performing all updates and maintenance to managing security. The bigger picture, however, is that users are trusting their data for someone else to look after, said Steve Santorelli, a former Scotland Yard detective, now manager of outreach at the Internet security research group Team Cymru.

    The downside is that you are abrogating responsibility for your data. Someone else has access to it and someone else is responsible for keeping it safe, Santorelli said.

    Although cloud providers may ensure your data is safe, Santorelli said some are not always looking after your best interests.

    No business is ever going to be as rabid about looking after your data as you would or should be. They are in the business of making money from you, after all. Securing your data sometimes becomes a marketing mantra more than a way of life, he said.

    2. Cyberattacks

    Any time you store data on the Internet, you are at risk for a cyberattack. This is particularly problematic on the cloud, where volumes of data are stored by all types of users on the same cloud system.

    The scary thing is the vulnerability to Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and the concentration of so much data, Santorelli said. The single point of failure is the cloud. If something goes bad it impacts a very wide group of people. It s easier to steal and disrupt in bulk.

    Although most cloud providers have stringent security measures, as technology becomes more sophisticated, so do cyberattacks.

    When cloud companies get the security right and many actually do a pretty reasonable job then miscreants have to get creative to get to the data, Santorelli said. For instance, instead of hacking the cloud, hackers will attempt to hack your account instead.

    Passwords and secret answers become the soft underbelly of your security. Just like when banks made online account hacking harder, the miscreants turned to phishing to get around the restrictions and steal your passwords, he said.

    3. Insider threats

    Just as cyberattacks are on the rise. so are security breaches from the inside.

    Vodafone s breach of 2 million customer records and the Edward Snowden breach at the NSA are wake-up calls that the most serious breaches are due to insider threats and privileged user access, said Eric Chiu, president and co-founder of HyTrust. a cloud infrastructure control company

    Once an employee gains or gives others access to your cloud, everything from customer data to confidential information and intellectual property are up for grabs.

    The cloud makes this problem 10 times worse since administrative access to the cloud management platform, either by an employee or an attacker posing as an employee, enables access to copy and steal any virtual machine, undetected,
    as well as potentially destroy the entire cloud environment in a matter of
    minutes, Chiu said.

    4. Government intrusion

    With the recent NSA leaks and the ensuing reports on government surveillance programs, competitors aren t the only ones who may want to take a peek at your data.

    Something that has been in the news recently is that government entities and technology companies in the U.S. and elsewhere may be inspecting your data as it is transmitted or where it resides in the Internet, including within clouds, said Scott Hazdra, principal security consultant for Neohapsis. a security and risk management consulting company specializing in mobile and cloud security.

    Granted, privacy has always been a concern with the cloud. But instead of just worrying about competitors, disgruntled customers or employees breaching cloud security, businesses now have to worry about government intrusion as well.

    Loss of confidentiality to data is not a new risk; however, the threat sources might not have been one companies were previously worried about, Hazdra said. For instance, a company may have a concern that competitors will try to steal their data so they encrypt transmission and storage of it. Now that someone other than a competitor may be interested in that data doesn t fundamentally change the risk.

    5. Legal liability

    Risks associated with the cloud are not limited to security breaches. They also include its aftermath, such as lawsuits filed by or against you.

    The latest risks to using cloud for business are compliance, legal liability and business continuity, said Robert J. Scott, managing partner of Scott Scott LLP, an intellectual property and technology law firm. Data breach incidences are on the rise, and so are lawsuits.

    Scott, who is also a cloud law speaker and author, said that while the cloud is all about ease of access, collaboration and rapidity, its benefits have to be weighed against the extent of security measures.

    Information security has always been finding a balance between ease of access and the sharing of information verses completely locked down security, he said. The more you have of one, the less you have of the other.

    6. Lack of standardization

    What makes a cloud safe ? A provider could have the latest security features, but due to the general lack of cloud standardization. there are no clear-cut guidelines unifying cloud providers. Further, given the plethora of cloud services in different sectors, this is especially problematic for users when determining exactly how safe their cloud really is.

    The question of how safe the cloud is has many facets, and the answer depends on the cloud services provider, the type of industry a company is in, and the accompanying regulations concerning the data it is considering storing in the cloud, Scott said.

    Since not all cloud providers are built the same, one provider s definition of safe may not be the same as another s, Scott said.

    7. Lack of support

    Imagine being unable to access your cloud before a big meeting or, worse, being in the middle of a cyberattack that has taken down your entire bread and butter your website. Now imagine trying to contact your provider, only to find that their customer service is nonexistent. While some cloud providers have excellent customer support, others could leave you in the cold.

    The most frustrating thing when something goes wrong is not being able to speak directly with an engineer, said April Sage, director of Healthcare Vertical at Online Tech. a cloud provider specializing on compliant cloud hosting.

    If your systems are not mission-critical, you don t need to worry so much about security and availability, Sage said. However, if you support mission-critical systems, or your online presence is critical for your business to operate smoothly, you have to be prepared to invest in a cloud and cloud provider that is capable of providing a level of protection commensurate with your needs.

    8. There s always a risk

    The biggest risk when it comes to cloud computing is that you never know what is up ahead. Hackers have been around from the start and they are not going anywhere any time soon. And as technology advances, so do the risks that come with adopting them.

    Given these current and future dangers, do the benefits of cloud computing outweigh its risks? Neil Rerup, author of Cyber Peril (Sutton Hart, 2013) and founder of Enterprise Cybersecurity Architects (ECSA). said it depends on the business.

    The cloud is not for everyone, Rerup said. Like with all solutions, you have to weigh what level of risk you are comfortable dealing with.

    For business using or considering migrating to the cloud, all you can do is be as prepared as you can possibly be. The key is getting to know providers as much as you can, both as a company and from an end-user perspective.

    Using cloud solutions is like kissing someone you don t know you don t know what types of germs they have and whether you ll catch something from them, Rerup said.

    The three layers of cloud computing

    Cloud computing is made up of a variety of layered elements, starting at the most basic physical layer of storage and server infrastructure and working up through the application and network layers. The cloud can be further divided into different implementation models based on whether it’s created internally, outsourced or a combination of the two.

    The three cloud layers are:

    • Infrastructure cloud: Abstracts applications from servers and servers from storage
    • Content cloud: Abstracts data from applications
    • Information cloud: Abstracts access from clients to data

    The three cloud implementation models are:

    • Private cloud: Created and run internally by an organization or purchased and stored within the organization and run by a third party
    • Hybrid cloud: Outsources some but not all elements either internally or externally
    • Public cloud: No physical infrastructure locally, all access to data and applications is external

    An infrastructure cloud includes the physical components that run applications and store data. Virtual servers are created to run applications, and virtual storage pools are created to house new and existing data into dynamic tiers of storage based on performance and reliability requirements. Virtual abstraction is employed so that servers and storage can be managed as logical rather than individual physical entities.

    The content cloud implements metadata and indexing services over the infrastructure cloud to provide abstracted data management for all content. The goal of a content cloud is to abstract the data from the applications so that different applications can be used to access the same data, and applications can be changed without worrying about data structure or type. The content cloud transforms data into objects so that the interface to the data is no longer tied to the actual access to the data, and the application that created the content in the first place can be long gone while the data itself is still available and searchable.

    The information cloud is the ultimate goal of cloud computing and the most common from a public perspective. The information cloud abstracts the client from the data. For example, a user can access data stored in a database in Singapore via a mobile phone in Atlanta, or watch a video located on a server in Japan from his a laptop in the U.S. The information cloud abstracts everything from everything. The Internet is an information cloud.

    5 Essential Characteristics of Cloud Computing

    To employ new technologies effectively, such as cloud computing . organizations must understand what exactly they’re getting. With this in mind, the National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued its 16th and final version of The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing .

    “When agencies or companies use this definition, they have a tool to determine the extent to which the information technology implementations they are considering meet the cloud characteristics and models,” says Peter Mell, a NIST computer scientist who coauthored the report, also known as Special Publication 800-145.

    “This is important because by adopting an authentic cloud, they are more likely to reap the promised benefits of cloud: cost savings, energy savings, rapid deployment and customer empowerment,” Mell says. “And, matching an implementation to the cloud definition can assist in evaluating the security properties of the cloud.”

    The special publication includes the five essential characteristics of cloud computing:

    1. On-demand self-service: A consumer can unilaterally provision computing capabilities, such as server time and network storage, as needed automatically without requiring human interaction with each service provider.
  • Broad network access: Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through standard mechanisms that promote use by heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g. mobile phones, tablets, laptops and workstations).
  • Resource pooling: The provider’s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to consumer demand. There is a sense of location independence in that the customer generally has no control or knowledge over the exact location of the provided resources but may be able to specify location at a higher level of abstraction (e.g. country, state or datacenter). Examples of resources include storage, processing, memory and network bandwidth.
  • Rapid elasticity: Capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released, in some cases automatically, to scale rapidly outward and inward commensurate with demand. To the consumer, the capabilities available for provisioning often appear to be unlimited and can be appropriated in any quantity at any time.
  • Measured service: Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource use by leveraging a metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service (e.g. storage, processing, bandwidth and active user accounts). Resource usage can be monitored, controlled and reported, providing transparency for the provider and consumer.
  • SP 800-145 also defines four deployment models – private, community, public and hybrid – that together categorize ways to deliver cloud services.

    The first draft of the cloud computing definition was created in November 2009 (see The Ultimate Cloud Computing Definition ). “We went through many versions while vetting it with government and industry before we had a stable one,” Mell says.

    NIST says the definitions are intended to serve as a means for broad comparisons of cloud services and deployment strategies, and to provide a baseline for discussion from what is cloud computing to how to best use cloud computing.
