Credit report

You can boost your chances of being accepted for a credit card or loan by finding out your credit score first. Knowledge is power, so being in the know by being party to the same information as the lender, will place you in a much stronger position.

Are you aware of what sort of information is held on your credit file? Unless you regularly check your file, the chances are you don t know, but finding out can help you work out the best ways to improve your rating.

The information held on your credit file helps lenders to decide whether or not they will accept your credit card, mortgage, loan or even mobile phone contract application.

If you know you ve made a few financial slip ups in the past and your credit score could be better, or you ve never borrowed and so haven t yet built up a credit history in the first place, there are steps you can take to improve your rating so you are more likely to be accepted if you want to take out a loan or apply for a credit card.

Are you on the electoral roll?

If you have registered to vote, then you should already be on the electoral roll at your current address. The electoral roll is used by many companies to check you are who you say you are, so they can ensure someone else isn t using your identity fraudulently to make credit applications in your name. If you’re not registered on the electoral roll, you ll need to get in touch with your local council and request a registration form, or alternatively you can register online.

Are you already a borrower?

It might sound odd, but if you ve never borrowed money before, lenders are likely to see this as a negative. They want to know that you can manage your money responsibly, and if you have never borrowed, this cannot be demonstrated. If you haven t ever had a credit card or loan, it may therefore be worth opening an account in order to create a credit history but make sure you repay what you owe and on time, otherwise you could end up with a black mark on your credit file.

Check your credit rating

Are you certain that the information held about you is absolutely right? It is worth checking your file to make sure that it does not contain details that are wrong and could restrict your chances of being accepted credit. You can get a copy of your credit report at our credit monitoring service. And if you find any inaccuracies you can apply to the relevant agency to get them changed.

County Court Judgments (CCJs)

If you’ve had a County Court Judgement against you which has now been settled, make sure this is recorded on your credit file, as having one which hasn t yet been settled can have a very negative impact on your credit rating. If your CCJ isn t showing up as being settled, ask the court to provide confirmation details and pass these on to the credit rating agencies.

Don t make repeated applications

If you are turned down for credit, don t be tempted to make lots of other applications elsewhere. These will leave a footprint on your credit file which could work against you as lenders might think you are desperate to borrow money, or that you are victim of identity fraud. Before making any credit application, get hold of a copy of your report so you know how strong your credit rating is, and only make applications for deals you are confident you will be accepted for.

Change of circumstances

If your personal situation has changed, for example, you ve got divorced or lost your job, and you are finding it difficult to make ends meet, you must let lenders know as soon as possible. You can put a Notice of Correction on your credit file explaining why you might have missed any payments. Lenders should take this into consideration when you make a credit application, particularly if you are able to show you have subsequently got back on track financially.

Keep borrowing in check

Don t max out your credit card. If you owe money on your card, you should try and ensure it isn t more than a third of your overall credit limit. If you often own much more than this, then lenders might start to worry about lending you any more money as they will be concerned you might not be able to keep up with repayments.

Pay on time

Make sure payments go out on time by setting up direct debits and standing orders wherever possible. It’s easy to forget a payment so setting up direct debits and standing orders with your bank will ensure payments go out on time. This will also ensure you won t be stung by any penalty charges or fees for paying late, which could have a negative impact on your credit rating.

Shut down credit accounts you no longer use

If you ve got credit cards or other credit accounts which you don t need any more, shut them down as soon as possible. When lenders look at your credit file, they focus on the total amount of credit available to you, as opposed to the amount you actually owe, so having lots of open accounts could reduce your credit rating.

Pay on time

Missing or late loan or credit card repayments will work against you and leave a black mark on your credit file. Make sure you always pay on time as this will show lenders that you are good at managing your money.

Other factors which can have an impact

As well as looking carefully at your credit history, when you apply for credit lenders will also want to check how long you have been a UK resident. If you have only recently moved here, you may have to wait at least three months before you apply for a credit card. You may also have to show proof of your income and provide evidence of employment.

How our site works

We want to show you as many credit reporting companies as possible, so you can choose the one that suits you best. We can t promise to show you every single company, because some don t want to be included on comparison websites. We ve ranked the companies according to the fee they pay us, from highest to lowest. This doesn t necessarily mean that the company at the top of the list is the best one for you make sure you compare them to find the one that suits you best. Five Ways To Get a Free Credit Score (No Trials! ), credit score monitoring.#Credit #score #monitoring

Five Ways To Get a Free Credit Score (No Trials!)

Credit score monitoringUpdated 2017. As noted, the government requires the credit bureaus to provide you a free credit report once every 12 months from AnnualCreditReport.com. Ideally, you should check in more frequently. The services listed below provide you a free credit score updated throughout the year either daily, weekly, or monthly. Most offer additional data taken directly from your credit reports, while some even offer free daily credit monitoring or free identity protection services.

As of OCTOBER 2017, all three major credit bureaus are covered: TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. You do not need to already have a specific credit card. Being ad-supported, they can do so without the hassle of annoying trial membership offers, requiring credit card numbers, or having to remember to cancel anything.

Credit score monitoring

CreditSesame.com offers a free credit score every month, based on your TransUnion credit report (VantageScore). They used Experian data in the past, but it appears that most members have been migrated over to Transunion. Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

  • Free daily credit monitoring. Credit Sesame also offers free daily credit monitoring of your TransUnion data, with alerts coming via e-mail, text, or smartphone app. This service tracks more than 40 different credit activities such as a balance change, address change or when a new account is opened.
  • Free identity protection and restoration services. Credit Sesame also includes $50,000 in identity theft insurance and access to identity restoration support in their free membership level.

Credit score monitoring

CreditKarma.com offers you two free credit scores, based on your TransUnion and Equifax credit reports and updated weekly (VantageScore). Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required. The two-in-one feature is nice.

  • Free credit monitoring. Credit Karma also offers free e-mail credit monitoring alerts of your TransUnion data.

Credit score monitoring

FreeCreditScore.com offers a free credit score every month, based on your Experian credit report (FICO 08). Score range is 300-850. They require your full Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

  • Free credit monitoring. They also offer free e-mail credit monitoring alerts of your Experian data.

Credit score monitoring

WalletHub.com offers a free credit score based on your TransUnion credit report (VantageScore), updated daily. They also provide access to your full TransUnion credit report daily (although it may not be updated that often). Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

Your Existing Credit Card

I wouldn t sign up for a new credit card just for a credit score, but if you already have one, check to see if it offers a free monthly credit score as a perk:

Some may point out that many of the scores above are not FICO scores. No, they are not FICO scores because Fair Isaac charges more money for them and these companies can t cover those costs with their advertising. However, these free credit scores can still be very useful for tracking changes and general trends in your credit history. Free credit monitoring is also a great way to track any big changes including fraudulent activity. There is value in getting an e-mail notification whenever a new account is added to my report.

Credit Karma to launch free ID monitoring following Equifax hack

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Credit Karma Inc is launching a new free service that will alert customers if their identity data has been compromised in hacks, the San Francisco-based fintech company said on Friday in the wake of massive breach at credit monitoring agency Equifax Inc( EFX.N ).

The new ID monitoring service is being tested and will be available in October, the company said on Friday.

Similar to services offered by Symantec-owned ( SYMC.O ) LifeLock Inc, CreditKarma will keep track of data breaches and tell customers if they are one of the victims. Customers can then check to use the company’s credit monitoring services and flag suspicious activities.

The company said it was accelerating the launch of the new service in response to the large data breach at Equifax, where thieves may have stolen personal information of 143 million Americans.

CreditKarma saw a 50 percent spike in sign-ups to its platform in the weekend after the hack, it said.

While the ID monitoring will be free, the company hopes it will drive more people back to its services.

When they come back not only can we help them make a decision on what to do, Nikhyl Singhal chief product officer at CreditKarma, said in an interview. It also gives us an ability to ensure they can check on other parts of their financial life.

Founded in 2007, CreditKarma is best known for providing free credit scores and helping users find credit products such as personal loans and credit cards. It gets paid from the product providers for helping generate leads.

The company, with more than 75 million users, is among the most well-funded fintech companies globally. It has been expanding beyond its flagship free credit score tool, to offer other services such as free tax filing.

All of this is a way to bring people back to the product, Singhal said.

This week the company announced it will be adding Equifax to its free credit monitoring service, which notifies members of significant changes to their credit report. It previously offered the service for competitor TransUnion ( TRU.N ).

Equifax changes fine print for TrustedID Premier free credit monitoring

Equifax, one of the three main credit reporting companies, has faced widespread criticism over its response to a massive data breach that has exposed millions of Americans personal information.

The Atlanta-based company announced last week that a cybersecurity incident has potentially impacted 143 million U.S. consumers. Criminals gained access to sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, between May and July. Equifax said it discovered the hack on July 29 but waited more than a month to publicly announce it.

Equifax modifies TrustedID terms of use

When Equifax came forward with the news last Thursday, it set up a website, equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers find out if their data may have been compromised.

That same website offers users a year of free credit file monitoring and identity theft protection with TrustedID Premier, an Equifax product. At first, the terms and conditions included arbitration language that indicated anyone who enrolled would give up their right to sue the company. Facing pressure from both politicians and consumer groups, Equifax clarified late Friday that the arbitration clause wouldn t apply to the data breach.

There was yet another update to Equifax s data breach website early Monday morning:

To confirm, enrolling in the free credit file monitoring and identity theft protection products that we are offering as part of this cybersecurity incident does not prohibit consumers from taking legal action. We have already removed that language from the Terms of Use on the site http://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. The Terms of Use on http://www.equifax.com do not apply to the TrustedID Premier product being offered to consumers as a result of the cybersecurity incident. Again, to be as clear as possible, we will not apply any arbitration clause or class action waiver against consumers for claims related to the free products offered in response to the cybersecurity incident or for claims related to the cybersecurity incident itself.

I checked the updated terms of use and can confirm that the word arbitration is no longer part of the nearly 3,000-word document. Read it here.

Clark: Do not sign up for Equifax s free credit monitoring

Money expert Clark Howard s advice remains the same: Don t enroll in TrustedID Premier.

This data breach is so severe that the criminals will be able to use the information they ve obtained next year, five years from now and beyond, so one year of protection isn t enough.

My advice is don t go to Equifax s website. Assume you are affected and act accordingly, Clark said.

Clark says there are two things you should do to protect your identity:

  1. Sign up for Credit Karma s free credit monitoring to receive alerts if anything suspicious shows up on your TransUnion credit report
  2. Freeze your credit with all three main credit bureaus to restrict access to your credit report and keep the criminals out

Clark said a credit freeze is the only answer in this case. I completed the process on Friday in about 15 minutes using Clark s step-by-step guide.

Five Ways To Get a Free Credit Score (No Trials!)

Credit monitoring comparisonUpdated 2017.

Credit monitoring comparison

Credit monitoring comparison

CreditKarma.com offers you two free credit scores, based on your TransUnion and Equifax credit reports and updated weekly (VantageScore). Score range is 300-850. They only require the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required. The two-in-one feature is nice.

  • Free credit monitoring. Credit Karma also offers free e-mail credit monitoring alerts of your TransUnion data.

Credit monitoring comparison

FreeCreditScore.com offers a free credit score every month, based on your Experian credit report (FICO 08). Score range is 300-850. They require your full Social Security Number. No trial or credit card required.

  • Free credit monitoring. They also offer free e-mail credit monitoring alerts of your Experian data.

Credit monitoring comparison

Equifax Hack: 7 Questions Everyone Should Ask Themselves, Money, credit monitoring.#Credit #monitoring

7 Questions You Must Keep Asking About the Equifax Hack

Last week Equifax announced that the personal information of 143 million Americans was potentially compromised in one of the largest data breach s in U.S. history. Since then, millions of consumers have been left with unanswered questions about how they may be impacted and what, exactly, the hackers got away with.

While plenty of details are still cloudy, here s what we know so far, and what you can do to protect yourself.

What Accounts Could Be Compromised?

Hackers got away with a ton of information in the breach, and the consequences could be far-reaching for many Americans. While many experts have advised people to freeze their credit reports in the aftermath, actually many types of accounts are at risk. A credit freeze will only block the opening of a new account, says Howard Tischler, co-founder and CEO of EverSafe, which offers identity theft protection services. What about an existing account, or your bank account, or investing accounts? The credit freeze only affects accounts that have to do with credit.

Potentially, fraudsters could:

  • Open credit cards in your name
  • Open utility accounts or in your name
  • Open loans (like payday loans)
  • Commit insurance fraud
  • Take out a mortgage in your name
  • Steal your tax return
  • Steal your Social Security benefits
  • Access your Medicare benefits
  • Access your investments (including your 401(k) and other retirement accounts)
  • Acquire a SIM card in your name

Essentially, think of any type of financial account you have or could have. If you use your Social Security Number to sign up for or access it, it s at risk.

How Long Should I Be Worried About This?

A long, long time. According to experts, it s no longer a matter of if your information was stolen, but when it will be used. Unfortunately this is a breach that could have lifelong impacts, which I don t think anybody wants to hear, says Jocelyn Baird, an associate editor at NextAdvisor.

The magnitude of this hack means consumers will have to be proactive for the foreseeable future about monitoring their credit, bank accounts, and identity. Right now, hackers may be lying low, but as soon as it s been long enough for people to start feeling comfortable again (or for Equifax s free credit monitoring service to expire), they will likely strike.

The data has a long shelf life, says Tischler. Things like your Social Security Number, name, and birthday don t change over time. So you should always be on the lookout.

And Baird points out that some things, like loans, may not appear on your credit report right away. It s all dependent on when the creditor reports them, if they report them at all, or if they go into collections. Plus, not all creditors report to all three agencies (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian), which is why it s important to check each of your credit reports annually, at least. You could miss things if you only check one or two.

In other words, proactively checking your credit reports, bank accounts, and investments for fraud or suspicious activity should be part of your financial routine in the 21st century.

What Are the Alternatives to Equifax s Credit Monitoring Service?

If you are wary of using Equifax s offered security measures (and who isn ?t), there are other free services you can look into to monitor your credit. Credit Sesame, for example, offers free credit monitoring and ID theft protections. Additionally, Credit Karma and Clarity Money are useful (and free) apps that track your credit reports and alert you when something is potentially wrong. Your bank may also offer free credit alerts and changes to your score, so look into that.

However, as Tischler pointed out, this hack will go well beyond your credit. So consider purchasing more comprehensive security systems, such as LifeLock, Identity Guard, or EverSafe, which monitor your reports from all three credit agencies, but also comb the dark web for your information (the dark web is where hackers and fraudsters sell your information) and keep tabs on your investment and bank accounts.

If you take advantage, a lot of them will offer 30 days free and that s a good way to get in and see what information they provide and monitor, and if you like the website, suggests Baird.

This can all be time consuming, but as Tischler says, the time and money involved in rectifying identity theft is much more costly.

People need to take responsibility for themselves, he says. Granted, you would like Equifax to be better caretakers of your information, but at the end of the day the information is out there.

What Are the Consequences of Freezing My Credit Accounts?

Experts have recommended freezing your credit at the three main agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion), which prevents them from providing your credit history to potential creditors (and therefore prevents scammers from using your ID to open credit cards, take out mortgages, etc.). If you do this, the main consequence is that you will not be able to immediately qualify for a new credit card or apartment yourself instead you ll pay a fee (which varies by state) at each of the bureaus to unfreeze your reports. Freezing your credit will not impact your score.

People are understandably upset that Equifax could make money off of their own misdeeds. Given how much more identity theft would likely cost you, however, this is well worth the price. (The company tweeted that it intends to refund customers who paid for an Equifax Security Freeze after the breach was publicized.)

If hackers used your information before you put a freeze on your accounts, freezing them will not be able to prevent damage. But it allows you some peace of mind going forward.

What Can I Do Besides Freezing My Accounts?

Beyond freezing your credit accounts, there are many other steps you can take. As noted, you re going to want to pay special attention to your bank account, credit card statements, and tax refunds. You can place a fraud alert (and extended fraud alert) on your credit reports. Fraud alerts are less stringent, says Baird, who prefers a full freeze to alerts. They are also only good for 90 days and then you have to renew them.

Additionally, always turn on two-factor authentication when available (which requires users, for example, to enter a code texted or emailed to them in addition to a password) and consider resetting your passwords.

Can I Sue Equifax?

There was a minor controversy when the breach was first announced, and users noticed that signing up for Equifax s TrustedID Premier might waive their right to participate in a class action lawsuit against the company. Equifax has since said the arbitration clause does not apply to those who sign up for TrustedID Premiere after the breach (though lawyers say it could be trickier in court).

There have been at least 23 class action lawsuits filed against Equifax, USA TODAY reports, and you may also be able to file a lawsuit in a small claims court.

For more information on how to protect yourself, visit the CFPB s website.

So What s Congress Doing About This?

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren was quick to jump on the Equifax scandal as soon as it was made public, Warren began demanding answers and culpability from the company, and she and fellow Democratic Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii introduced the Freedom from Equifax Exploitation Act, which would make it free to freeze and unfreeze all three credit reports, though it does not appear to have picked up much steam in the Republican-led Senate.

Several Congressional committees have scheduled hearings, including the Democrats of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which sent Equifax a letter with questions about the breach (its hearing is reportedly being planned for sometime in October). Additionally, 40 states have launched a probe into the breach.

Ironically, Republicans are currently drafting bills that would deregulate credit agencies. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) s FCRA Liability Harmonization Act, for example, would cap actual and statutory damages for class actions involving credit agencies at $500,000, and completely eliminate punitive damages, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Anthem Hack: Credit Monitoring Won t Catch Medical Identity Theft

Health insurer Anthem is offering free credit monitoring after a major breach that may have affected as many as 80 million records, but customers should watch out for an especially insidious type of fraud: medical identity theft.

Anthem disclosed the hack late Wednesday, saying customer information that could have been compromised includes names, Social Security numbers, street addresses — and the medical ID numbers found on customers’ health insurance cards.

Criminals can use those numbers at hospitals, emergency rooms and pharmacies to receive care and prescriptions, racking up charges and wrecking victims’ medical records. (No health data or financial information was included in the breach, the company said.)

It’s like an unlimited credit card that gets you ‘free’ access to expensive services and drugs, said Bob Gregg, CEO of ID Experts. which provides breach-response services to major U.S. companies. Everyone thinks about credit cards and bank accounts, but medical identity theft can be much more damaging and extremely hard to fix.

Credit Monitoring Service

If someone steals your identity and commits fraud in your name, there’s a good chance some of their actions will show up in your credit files, such as opening new accounts, defaulting on payments or even changing your home address. Monitoring your credit for changes like these can provide an early warning that your information may be in jeopardy. PrivacyGuard’s triple- bureau credit monitoring scans your credit files each day for certain changes and quickly alerts you if any monitored changes are discovered. See details .

Why Triple- Bureau Credit Monitoring Is so Important

It could take weeks, months or even years to discover that your credit is being misused by someone else. However, by monitoring your credit files each day with PrivacyGuard, you could find out about certain changes quickly, and receive the resources and support you need to help rectify any issues and prevent further damage to your credit.

Each day, PrivacyGuard’s triple-bureau credit monitoring scans your credit files at the three national credit reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Monitoring all three credit agencies for changes is important because each agency operates separately from one another, and the information they receive and include in your credit report could be different. As such, it’s possible that a particular change may only show up on one of your three credit reports. With PrivacyGuard’s triple-bureau credit monitoring, you can help ensure that you keep track of these changes regardless of which of the three national credit reporting agencies are recording them. See details .

For your security, simply complete the authentication process on the website after you enroll in PrivacyGuard. You cannot access your Credit Report and Scores or start your Credit Monitoring and Alerts until you verify your identity.

What Credit Monitoring Looks For

It takes a certain kind of change to trigger a credit monitoring alert. PrivacyGuard s credit monitoring informs you of new inquiries, certain derogatory information, new accounts opened, public records added to the credit file, or a change of address. Changes like these shouldn’t happen without your knowledge, and if such a change occurs and you did not initiate it, it usually indicates one of two things – either some inaccurate information has been posted to your credit report, or someone may have gained access to your credit information. Whatever the reason, PrivacyGuard provides you with the support you need to assess the change and quickly rectify it, if necessary.

Credit Monitoring and More at Your Fingertips

Monitoring your credit is only one of the ways PrivacyGuard helps your credit and identity stay safe. You also can receive your latest triple- bureau credit report – and the CreditXpert Credit Scores associated with each – every month. That way, you can view your report in its entirety throughout the year, which is essential for spotting and correcting any inaccuracies for things that are not being monitored. In addition, PrivacyGuard tracks your Experian Scorex PLUS sm credit score and alerts you of major fluctuations that could indicate either identity theft or a major occurrence on your credit files. Credit Reports and Scores

All three bureaus

Why bother checking credit reports and scores?

Knowing as much as possible about credit reports and credit scores is something that every individual should do in order to keep on track of their finances. Credit reports and scores are used by lenders to determine whether you are viable for the credit that they are offering. This can be anything from a bank loan to a mortgage to car loan and so understanding what credit reports are and how to maintain them is highly important.

What is a Credit Report?

A credit report is basically detailed information about your credit history. This will include information about any past loans that you have taken out, how quickly you repaid your credit, whether you had any late payments and even, in some cases, how you pay your bills. Your credit card information will also be included in a credit report and this will include information about when you took the credit cards out, the history of your credit card payments, whether you have a balance left on the card and whether you have ever defaulted on your payments.

Furthermore information about your financial history may also be included on your credit report so if you have filed for bankruptcy in the past, if you currently have any financial lawsuits out against you or if you have ever had to foreclose a property, you can expect that this too will be documented.

What is a Credit Score?

Based on the information in your credit report you will be awarded a credit score. The more financial problems that you have had, the lower your score will be. Likewise if you are careful with your finances you will be rewarded with a high credit score. Your credit score will be used by lenders to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the loans they have on offer. This is especially true when it comes to credit cards: some of the credit cards that have a lot of perks are only available to those with a high credit rating, and this is for the reasons listed above.

Who Determines Your Credit Score?

Your credit scores are determined and maintained by agencies known as credit bureaus. These are highly accurate companies that will take note of anything in your history that is related to credit and loans. When you apply for credit you will be asked to give your creditor a number of details about your credit history which they will then check with the credit bureau. This is why you should always be as accurate and detailed as possible.

Checking Your Credit Report

It is possible to request information about your credit score from a credit bureau. It is advised to do this no more than once a year. When you receive your credit report you can make sure that it is accurate and that nothing has been documented incorrectly. If it has you can speak to the credit bureau and ask for changes to be made. The only other way to improve your credit rating is to ensure that you make your payments on time and do not default on any payments. If you are responsible financially you will slowly start to see your credit rating improve.

Is Credit Monitoring Right For You?

There are pros and cons of paying for the service.

Most consumers today are very much aware of the importance of maintaining a good credit history. The information reported on your credit report may determine whether or not you are approved for credit and if so, if the terms will be affordable.

What happens when the information appearing on your credit report is inaccurate? While there are several ways to dispute records that are incorrect, you must first be able to spot these errors and act on them. In the case of identity theft or fraud, it may be months before you notice inaccurate information and by that time, the damage will likely be done. This is where credit monitoring services come into play.

    What Are Credit Monitoring Services?

In today’s busy world, many consumers are willing to pay an outside company to provide services which the consumer may not have the time or ability to perform. Credit monitoring services are available for a fee, and provide for consumers an ever watchful eye on their credit history to spot suspicious activity.

Once the fee for this service is paid, the credit monitoring company takes over and begins constantly reviewing your credit activity and history. They are on the lookout for fraudulent activity and instances which may indicate identity theft or other changes in your credit activity that seem out-of-place.

    How Does Credit Monitoring Work?

Each credit monitoring service is different, however the concept remains the same across the industry. Most credit monitoring systems will review information reported to all three existing credit bureaus and notify you when they spot inconsistencies in your credit activity. Since suspicious activity may represent fraud or identity theft. the credit monitoring service notifies you within 24 hours (or sooner) to limit the amount of damage that may occur when your personal information falls into the wrong hands.

[Visit the U.S. News My Money blog for the best money advice from around the web.]

Is Credit Monitoring Worth the Cost?

There are two schools of thought regarding the cost effectiveness of credit monitoring services. Many consider the cost to be too expensive for a service that most people could perform themselves. Credit card companies have entire departments set up to spot and reduce fraud and there are other safeguards that can be put in place to reduce your risk of identity theft.

Consumers can choose to take a more active role in reviewing their credit report and other activity reported in monthly statements. On the other hand, if a credit monitoring service detects activity which would otherwise have gone undetected, the service has paid for itself by saving the consumer hundreds if not thousands of dollars that may be lost in the case of identity theft. It is important to remember that identity theft is not just harmful to your finances but many other aspects of life. It can take years for a victim of identity theft to recover both financially and emotionally.

It is up to each individual to determine how much they are willing to pay for peace of mind. If you are unable or unwilling to put forth the effort to actively monitor your own credit activity, these services can be quite cost effective. Conversely, those who are willing to do the legwork required to remain vigilant against fraud and identity theft can save themselves hundreds of dollars in fees for a service they can provide to themselves.

Pros And Cons Of Credit Monitoring Services

Identity theft is a complex problem and one that we’re relatively powerless to prevent. Who knows how many government entities, doctors’ offices, credit card companies and other entities have sensitive information, like our Social Security numbers, addresses and mothers’ maiden names? How can we trust every person who has access to the paper and electronic records containing that information, to keep it safe from criminals? How do we know that some of the people who are authorized to access this information aren’t criminals themselves?

This is where credit monitoring comes in; a seemingly tidy solution to the problem of stolen sensitive information. For around $10 to $15 a month, credit bureaus, banks and other financial services companies promise to keep an eye out for signs of potential fraud.

    What Credit Monitoring Services Offer

Here are some of the protections credit monitoring services say they offer.

Experian Credit Tracker Credit Monitoring, a $14.95 per month service, checks each of your three credit reports daily and emails you if anything changes. It only grants you access to your Experian credit report and score, however. The company also offers a $50,000 guarantee of identity theft expense reimbursement and access to a fraud resolution specialist, if your identity is stolen.

For identity theft protection, consumers can purchase a service for $12.95 per month from Experian, that provides access to your Experian credit report (but not score), the same monitoring and email notification service, daily internet scanning for unauthorized use of your Social Security number, debit and credit cards, $1 million in identity theft insurance and several other protections. The insurance is supposed to cover expenses such as lost wages, private investigator services and legal fees that you incur, if your identity is stolen. Citi Identity Monitor, at $12.95 per month, checks your credit file every business day and notifies you of any changes, provides services for fraud and identity theft victims and reimburses expenses associated with identity theft, up to $25,000. Its coverage is open to anyone, not just Citibank customers, and applies to all of your credit cards and bank accounts, not just ones you might have with Citibank.

Secure Identity Systems calls itself “the most comprehensive program available to protect you and your family from identity theft.” It goes beyond credit monitoring to look at Social Security, public records, real property records, phone databases and postal service databases to look for signs of identity theft. The company also provides phone assistance to help with identity recovery and reimburses up to $25,000 in expenses incurred from cleaning up after an identity thief. The company offers a number of pricing plans, based on enrollment terms and the number of people to be covered.

    Can Credit Monitoring Services Deliver?

Consumer advocates, including Consumer Reports, have stated that credit monitoring services are not a good use of consumers’ money, because they are inadequate at protecting against identity theft.

Here are some types of theft that credit monitoring won’t alert you to:

    • someone using your information to apply for a job
    • someone using your information to get a cell phone
    • someone using your Social Security Number (SSN). but not your name, to open new accounts

Another shortcoming of credit monitoring is that it can’t prevent the theft from happening in the first place, it can only notify you that it’s already happened. Also, most programs’ expense reimbursement offers don’t apply if your identity is stolen before you sign up for the service, even if you’re completely unaware of the theft. In addition, the Consumer Federation of America says that no identity theft protection service can provide complete protection.

    The Bottom Line

Identity thieves operate in many ways. Some belong to organized crime, some use fake checks with real account information and some steal information online, via security breaches, social engineering scams and hacking. Unlocked mailboxes and wallets remain prime targets for low-tech criminals, and smartphones create further opportunities for ID theft.

Though you can get your credit report for free once a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), a lot can happen in a year and the three reports do not always contain identical information, making it possible to miss an important red flag, if you only check each report once a year.

Credit monitoring, when combined with identity monitoring, can offer an added layer of protection, but consumers should weigh the ongoing costs of these programs against their benefits, and be aware that all products have shortcomings. Consumers can take extra steps to further protect their identities, but there is no foolproof system for preventing or catching this crime. I received an email about Target offering free credit monitoring services to customers because “criminals forced their way into our systems and took guest information.” Is this real?

Origins: Shoppers’ confidence in the Target chain of retail stores was shaken when the company announced in late 2013 a credit card security breach which occurred during the 2013 holiday shopping season had compromised about 40 million customer credit cards. One of Target’s responses to that crisis of consumer confidence was the sending out of millions of e-mail notifications in mid-January 2014 to customers who may have been affected by that breach, announcing the company was offering a year’s worth of free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance (through Experian) to help reassure their shoppers and protect them from becoming victims of credit card and identity theft. Anthem offers 2 years free credit monitoring, ID theft protection

INDIANAPOLIS – Anthem is offering free credit monitoring and ID theft protection for customers affected by their recent data breach.

Hackers broke into an Anthem IT system in what may be the largest data breach at a health company, with up to 80 million affected. Those affected are currently covered or have received coverage from Anthem in the past. The information includes names, birthdays, social security numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses and employment information, including income data, according to Kristin Binns, Anthem’s vice president of public relations.

    • VIDEO: Anthem data breach fallout (Your Money with Elaine Bedel)

Binns insisted no credit card, banking, or financial information was compromised, nor is there evidence that medical information like claims, test results or diagnostic codes were targeted or obtained.

Anthem has not yet determined exactly how many customers were affected. The server that hackers broke into contained the information of more than 80 million people, but it is possible not all of those were compromised.

The company is still compiling a list of potential victims and will start sending out letters soon.

Since the hack, some people are calling for tougher laws requiring tougher security measures.

The federal government is looking at new rules, But an Indianapolis attorney who handles intellectual property and cyber issues urged caution.

“There’s already a patchwork of state laws and most of the states have their own data security and security breach laws already,” said Jeff Kosc who specializes in information technology law. “And the proposed federal standard would actually be lower than some of the, So while you cover the gap to get to the states who don’t yet have something in place with respect to certain others it would actually lower the bar.”

He said it’s not just about big companies like Anthem.

Small and medium size businesses also have to toughen their cyber security, even if it means bringing in an outside expert.

Attorney General FAQ: What to do now?

Tom Gorup of Rook Security says customers should “absolutely” be concerned and continue to watch their credit score.

“This isn’t a one-year, two-year, or even five-year issue. This is a lifetime issue. Your social security number, your phone number, personal address. It’s all going to be available to these attackers for the duration that they decide to hold onto them,” Gorup said.

There are things Anthem customers can do to protect themselves.

“The credit watch that Anthem will be offering to those who have been compromised. Take advantage of that. In the meantime, you should be watching your credit score,” Gorup said.

He says it is going to take sweeping reform and more secure coding practices that hackers can’t get into to prevent future attacks.

Anthem has created a dedicated website with information for customers, AnthemFacts . The Indiana attorney general’s office is also offering a free credit freeze .

Your credit score is a very important financial number and, before recently, you had to buy your score, either through MyFICO. one of the major credit bureaus, or a third party.

Kenneth Lin, founder and CEO of Credit Karma. believed you should have access to your credit score absolutely free, without a credit card or tricky subscription cancellations. In March 2008, he made it happen.

    Absolutely Free Credit Scores

Credit Karma allows you to get a free credit score with absolutely no obligation. You don’t have to enter a credit card number. You don’t have to subscribe to a credit monitoring service. The credit score is absolutely free. I ve used it for several years and have never paid anything to view my credit score.

If you’re new to Credit Karma, you can sign up to receive a free credit score in less than two minutes. After you’ve signed up, you can continue to get a free credit score everyday, forever. Lin tells me Credit Karma will never charge you for your credit score. Instead, Credit Karma has partnered with advertisers who offset the cost of providing you a credit score .

    FAKO Score, Not FICO Score

The one drawback to Credit Karma s free score is that it s not a FICO score, the one most widely used by lenders.

Since 2008, Credit Karma has expanded their services to include free daily credit monitoring. a VantageScore. and an Auto Insurance Score. All those services are free.

    Credit Report Card

The Credit Report Card gives you a letter grade A-F in the following areas: Overall, Utilization, On-Time Payments, Average Age of Open Accounts, Total Accounts, Hard Inquiries. and Derogatory Marks. These grades can help you evaluate the areas, if any, that are hurting your credit score. If you re working to improve your credit score, you know exactly which area to focus on.

    Other Credit Information

In addition to credit score information. you can also find details about your debt accounts. including the amount your balances increased or decreased since your last update. Since I started using Credit Karma in 2008, it has evolved from a website to check your credit score to a tool to help you improve your credit and assess your debt. It s free and the information is invaluable. There s no reason not to use Credit Karma. When you visit the site, make sure you ve typed the URL correctly. Selecting a Credit Monitoring Service #call #credit #check

    #best credit monitoring service
    #

Are all credit monitoring services created equal?

The answer to this question is “hardly”‚ but it also depends on how much you ask of your credit monitoring service and what benefits you are looking to reap. Credit monitoring companies function by monitoring one or more of your three reports that are created by the three major bureaus to document your financial activity — TransUnion‚ Experian and Equifax.

While you can request a copy of each of these credit reports yourself for free annually‚ a credit monitoring service will continually be aware of certain changes that show up on your report. These three bureaus calculate your credit score and draft up your report differently‚ they all paint a somewhat similar picture of your financial standing. Even still‚ it is best to go with a service that keeps track of all three just in case one report shows signs of identity theft that another may have missed

What are the sure-fire signs of a good credit monitoring service?

When picking a credit monitoring service‚ do your homework before signing up for anything. You’ll want to go with a company that has established their reputation through years of service and is a name you can trust. To determine this‚ check in with the Better Business Bureau or customer review websites to see the company’s standing. And if a service seems to be offering more than they can actually deliver‚ this is probably the case. Shop around and make sure you choose a program that will work hard for you.

Naomi Barbeau EVP, Call Center at Digital Media Solutions

I have worked with Call Criteria for 3+ years. We have built multiple campaigns and call monitoring strategies. There are other solutions for call monitoring out there but the one attribute that Call Criteria brings to the table that is by far the most valuable is people. The people that work for this company are deeply invested from the top down. That said, each solution I have operationalized with them has been customized to the very specific needs of my business. At no point have I heard the words “we can’t.” These guys are the real deal.

    Frank Ponce Marketing Manager
    Inside Up

We discovered Call Criteria at an essential point of scaling our QA process. They have created a well-designed infrastructure which allows for flexibility of constantly changing calling parameters to meet our client’s needs. The interface provides intelligence and insights about agents which are not easily aggregated through standard in-house QA processes. It allows us to identify areas of improvement for each agent and acknowledge each of their strengths. Simply put, without Call Criteria we would still be in the dark ages of call center quality assurance.

    Danny Trejo Allstate

Call Criteria has opened up a whole new world of measurement for our staff. Why You Need to Check Your Credit Report

    Revised July 22, 2015.

Some 44 percent of people age 65 and up have never checked any of their credit reports. according to a recent survey by Bankrate.com. That percentage shocks me, especially considering how important the information is and how easy it is now to get it for free. Here’s why you need it and how to get it.

“Monitoring your credit goes well beyond scanning a three-digit [credit score] number,” said Jeanine Skowronski, credit card analyst at Bankrate.com. “Americans need to thoroughly review their credit reports for errors or signs of fraud. They also need to understand what factors, like missed payments or high debt-to-available-credit ratios, are driving their credit score in order to improve it.  A good credit score will help you, among other things, qualify for the best rates on loans .”

Further, credit scores can affect how much you pay for auto and property insurance. That’s because people with higher credit scores tend to have fewer insurance claims, according to insurance industry data.

3 minutes to a credit report

It used to be more difficult to get a credit score and report. I would occasionally exercise my right to get a free credit report from one of the three national credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), though it took quite a bit of time and gave me only my credit history, with no credit score unless I was willing to pay for it. Other so-called free services required a credit card number and an agreement that they could charge your card if you didn’t cancel the service within a month. That’s a game I don’t play, as they are counting on you to forget to take the steps to cancel the subscription.

Things changed a few years ago with the introduction of free services like CreditKarma. CreditSesame  and Quizzle. Bankrate just announced its own free service, called MyBankrate. These services are not only free, but fast. It took me less than three minutes to get my report. All I had to do was verify my identity, which included my Social Security number, and answer a few questions, such as past addresses and the names of institutions where I have accounts. The report included the Vantage 3.0 credit score, which is similar to a FICO score with 850 being perfect. It also listed my accounts and payment history. Had anything been wrong, I could dispute it.

    My experience

Whether we like it or not, credit scores are a reality and have a significant impact on our personal finances. I’ve used CreditKarma for three years now and have greatly benefited from it. About a year ago, a credit card was fraudulently opened in my name. CreditKarma’s free monitoring service sent me an email alerting me to this new card and I was able to cancel it before any charges were made. The credit card company repeatedly failed to delete the fraudulent information from my credit report and CreditKarma allowed me to keep tabs on it to hold the credit card company accountable. Ultimately, I needed to speak to senior officers of this multibillion-dollar bank to get them to remove the card and credit inquiry. It’s possible that a paid service such as AARP Identity Protection or IdentityForce could have helped me avoid this situation.

All of the services I’ve mentioned provide useful information, and I’m a fan of them. However, some will try to up-sell you with premium services. CreditKarma spokeswoman Christina Ra told me: “We do not have a ‘freemium’ model like other services, where you get basic features for free but have to pay for a more comprehensive account. Everything we offer is completely free.”

How can these companies offer their services for free? All of them generate revenue from ads on their websites, such as for credit cards and mortgage refinancing. These ads are targeted at your specific credit situation and I actually find many of them useful.

Get the latest tips on protecting your money and saving for retirement — AARP Money newsletter »

My advice is to spend the few minutes it takes to sign up for one of these services. Never give them the right to automatically charge your credit card for an ongoing service unless you want that service. Look beyond your credit score to other information, such as payment history and credit inquiries. Dispute any inaccuracy by going to the credit bureau’s website and following its directions.

The benefits of regularly checking your credit are twofold, providing not only peace of mind but also a path to having any inaccuracies or identity theft removed from your record. This can save you a lot of money and heartache in the future.

    Annual Credit Report:

Is Monitoring Your Credit Report Once a Year Enough?

Is it a good idea to review your personal credit report once a year? The answer to this question depends partially on how you choose to review your annual credit report. By law, you’re eligible to receive one free credit report per year from each of the major credit bureaus, TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. You shouldn’t request all three credit reports at the same time, however. In most cases, checking your personal credit report only once a year is ill-advised, especially when the number of identity theft cases continues to rise every year, putting everyone at greater risk of fraud or theft.

However, if you’ve regularly applied for one free annual credit report every four months or so from each of the major credit bureaus, and you’ve been diligent about monitoring your credit. you can probably get away with checking your credit less often. How often you should request a free annual credit report is determined by how good your credit is and how proactive you are about your personal finances. Ultimately, how often you receive your annual credit report from each of the three credit bureaus is a matter of personal preference, but you’re probably better off if you check your credit on a regular basis. Here’s why:

    Identity theft

Right now, you have a one-in-10 chance of becoming a victim of identity theft. To some, those might look like long odds. But the fact that you have a 10-percent chance in a country of approximately 300 million to deal with the profound personal and financial pain of identity theft illustrates just how severe this problem is. The best defense against identity theft is a good offense. Be vigilant about protecting your personal information, and review your personal credit report on a regular basis.

Errors in your annual credit report

Between human error, automated billing software, and the sheer volume of transactions occurring each day, it’s very likely that you’ll eventually have to deal with an error on your personal credit report. These errors aren’t uncommon, and the credit bureaus have protocols in place to make the process of disputing an error fairly painless.

    Major purchases

The majority of us use credit to make large purchases such as homes, vehicles, furniture, and other big-ticket items. In doing so, we’re essentially paying for the convenience of using someone else’s money. Before you take on a large financial commitment of any kind, it’s definitely in your best interests to obtain a copy of your annual credit report. Reviewing your personal credit report will allow you to correct any errors, including errors that could cost you many thousands of dollars over the length of the loan.

    Better Status Communication
The best way to create a status page for your app or website.
    Just ask New Relic.

Finally, a dedicated place to communicate downtime issues.

Instead of replying to the entire organization when the site goes down, you can now have them opt-in to every status update. StatusPage allows you to post in detail about specific downtime incidents. You can also list the status of each individual functional unit of your site — so if one function of your site is down but all of the other parts are working, you can indicate exactly what’s going on.

    Minimize distractions during downtime

When servers are on fire, you don’t need 100 internal emails and half of the executives stopping by asking why you’re down.

Get the whole devops team on the same page

If something is wrong, keeping the whole devops up-to-date with the issue will help it get resolved faster. Pipe updates to your page directly into HipChat or Slack

You can even schedule upcoming maintenance

Avoid the wrath of customers trying to access their dashboards only to find out that you are doing a major database migration by proactively notifying customers about upcoming scheduled maintenance.

Provide better support to customers with your own custom status page.

What is that noise? It’s the thundering herd of support tickets that come around every time your site is down. But no more! Point customers to your new status page a few times and they’ll learn to go straight there when they’re experiencing issues.

Downtime doesn’t have to be a support nightmare. Our customers have seen dramatic reductions in support tickets that come in during downtime events.

Avoid the plethora of repetitive tickets during downtime

Once users are used to checking your status page during an outage, you’ll notice a dramatic decline in support tickets. You can also direct them to subscribe to updates from your status page.

    Quicker answers means happier customers

The fact is, users want to know why things aren’t working as soon as possible. A quick visit to your status page is the best solution.

Lets you get back to answering real inquiries

Now that you’re not spending time answering redundant questions, you can get back to helping users with novel problems.

Follow downtime incidents without getting in the way.

Let’s face it. you’re obsessed with your customers, but you’re not in the trenches on a daily basis facing off with the ever expanding server gremlins. When your servers are on fire, best chances for a quick recovery are to let your devops team take the reigns and fix the issue at hand.

Having a company status page is the best way to stay up-to-date with what’s happening without getting in the way.

    Keep up with downtime incidents

Even if you’re not the one fixing the issue, you’d like to know what the problem is and what the team is doing to fix it.

Ensure regular updates to the status page

Make sure the team is regularly posting updates during downtime. Your customers hate being left out of the loop.

    Happier customers drives growth

Having a dedicated status page will show potential customers your commitment to uptime and that you’re confident enough to be transparent about it.

Exchange 2010 Database Copy Replay queue slowly climbing.

    Last Modified: 2012-08-18

A while since I asked a question, but I have a strange scenario here and maybe someone has some ideas on what I can look at.

5 Node DAG across two data centres. (3 in primary site, 2 in secondary site).
36 Databases in the DAG, with one copy on each DAG member.
Disks are 2TB SATA disks in single disk (JBOD) mode.
The problem server is an HP ProLiant BL460c G7 which connects to an HP MDS 600 storage unit.

On one of the DAG members in the secondary site, around 10 of the database copies are struggling to keep up on the Replay Queues. The Copy Queues remain empty all the time so I know that it’s copying the logs across OK, but the Reply Queues slowly climb throughout the day.

Overnight, they slowly clear. But they rarely ever get fully up to date.

I’ve been looking at some of the Perfmon counters for MsExchange Replication and can see for example, that on one of the database copies with problems we have the following:

Log Generation Rate on Source (generations/sec) – Average over 1m 40s is 0.572
    Log Replay Rate (generations/sec) – Average over 1m 40s is 0.133
Log Replay is Not Keeping Up – remains at 0.

It’s clear to me that the Log Replay Rate is failing to keep up with the Log Generation Rate on the source. The Log Replay Rate on the other Mailbox node in the secondary site is closer to 1/sec.

Test-ReplicationHealth results in all passes, no errors.

I’m not following how the Log Replay is Not Keeping Up value remains at 0 when from what I can see it’s clearly not keeping up in reality.

If I run this command the number of items in the Replay Queue goes up every time without fail:

    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopySta tus -Identity DatabaseName\ServerName

Thanks for the replies so far guys, some more info based on the questions asked:

That KB article points to MountAt Startup being False, but I checked and it’s true:

    Get-MailboxDatabase | Select MountAtStartup

RE: Backups are out of the question as we have no backup solution in place due to having a 5 node DAG in 2 sites, we are running backupless. 5 Copies of the data in case of sever failure etc, disks for the servers are all in different storage units as well.

RE: AV. No file level AV installed, server is running Symantec Mail Security for Exchange which is a Transport Level scanner, and would scan any emails sent/received by the server.

RE: Email sizes. Max size is set to 50MB, but regardless both of the Mailbox servers in the secondary site are the same spec with the same disks, and the other one is fine so I doubt it’s a traffic volume issue, just seems it is replaying the logs very slowly.

Circular Logging is enabled, but if I go into the MountPoint for one of the databases, I can see E0*.log files from around 09:29 this morning, so it’s currently about 55 minutes behind!

Server was restarted yesterday but had the same behaviour before and after the restart.

For disk perfmons what counters are people interested in?

In general things are going the right direction, but one of the databases has started to have problems with the Copy Queue and the Replay Queue as well.

The Copy Queue is currently 2138 on the Database, and the Replay Queue is 27043.

Running Test-ReplicationHealth | fl returns the following error under the Copy Queue section:

Log copy and inspection for database DatabaseName on machine ServerName is falling behind and Exchange isn’t able to keep up with new logs being generated on the source. The copy queue length is currently 1938. Review the replication performance counters on server ServerName to help identify the problem.

Not really anything of worth in the Event Logs that I can see.

Log Copy KB/Sec is around 2.4MB/Sec which means it should be able to copy around 2.5 logs a second. This is approximately the same as the same counter on the other passive server.

One of the things which does seem lower is the Log Inspection Rate counter. On the other passive server it’s averaging around 2.7, but on the one with problems it’s around 2.0.

Lower but not massively so. All of the other databases are going the right way, and the copy queues are all 0-2 except for this one database copy.

LastInspectedLogTime is slowly going up in time but it’s clearly not keeping up for some reason or other.

20 Cloud Monitoring and Management Tools: Which Are The Best?

Cloud services providers (CSPs) and managed services providers (MSPs) are seeking cloud monitoring and applications management tools. But which ones are the best? Here s a list of 20 options.

    Solarwinds vmware monitoring

How can cloud services providers (CSPs) and customers proactively monitor and manage cloud applications? Before I offer up a list of cloud monitoring tools, here s some background on what inspired this article.

I ve spent the past few years blogging about remote monitoring and management (RMM) software platforms designed for managed services providers (MSPs). Most of that coverage appears on our sister site, MSPmentor.

Some of those RMM platforms are evolving for cloud monitoring and application management. But there s also a whole new breed of cloud tools coming onto the scene. Which ones are ideal for MSPs and CSPs that want to proactively manage, monitor and optimize cloud services?

20 Cloud Monitoring Tools and Services

While Talkin Cloud doesn t offer product reviews, here s an early look at some of the cloud management tools we plan to increasingly track:

    1. AppDynamics: Focused on application monitoring in the cloud. Founded in 2008 by CEO Jyoti Bansal, a Wily veteran.

    2. Aternity: Core focus involves end-user experience management. The company s Frontline Performance Intelligence platform monitors mobile, virtual and physical devices. Yes, Aternity focuses some of those efforts on cloud monitoring.Backed by Intel Capital.

    3. Boundary: Former Nimsoft CEO Gary Read is running this startup. The company has been providing early warnings about cloud problems and outages over at Amazon Web Services and Windows Azure. Customers are impressed and rivals are taking note. The secret sauce: Boundary looks at aggregate cloud data from multiple customers, then determines if there are any red alerts in the data. Read is changing with the times, offering a freemium version of Boundary so that the company can gather plenty of data.

    4. CA Nimsoft Monitor: Nimsoft cut its teeth offering on-premises monitoring solutions for midsize MSPs. More recently, under CA s ownership, the platform allows customers and cloud services providers to monitor application instances in Amazon, Rackspace, Salesforce.com and other public clouds.

    5. Compuware Gomez: This is a SaaS-based platform for application performance management.

    6. CopperEgg RevealCloud and RevealUptime: CEO Bob Quillin has previously held executive posts at Hyper9 (acquired by SolarWinds in 2011) and nLayers (acquired by EMC in 2005). Could another M A deal be on the horizon? Hmmm. The company has a lengthy list of big CSPs as partners.

    7. Level Platforms Managed Workplace: Best known in the MSP market for monitoring SMB customer systems, Level Platforms can also monitor public cloud platforms like Office 365. CEO Peter Sandiford has been ahead of the curve on cloud monitoring predictions. But can he help MSPs to monetize cloud monitoring?

    8. LogicMonitor: MSPs in particular should keep close tabs on this company. I ve heard rumors about a major growth curve. CEO Kevin McGibben rolled out the business case to me during the IT Nation conference in November 2012. I was impressed with the conversation.

    9. ManageEngine: Another company that has worked in and around the MSP market, ManageEngine offers cloud monitoring tools as well as Amazon monitoring tools. Also of note: This is part of ZOHO Corp., the company that makes popular Zoho SaaS applications.

    10. Monitis: Keep a close eye on this company, which is owned by GFI Software. GFI has been building out a suite of SaaS products that allow MSPs to proactively manage and monitor customer environments, while also blending in storage and security solutions. Monitis brings cloud and web systems monitoring into that conversastion.

    11. NetEnrich: Better known for its NOC (network operations center) services, NetEnrich offers closet-to-cloud services that include cloud monitoring and management for VARs and MSPs that need third-party assistance.

    12. New Relic: Well known for its end user experience monitoring but also an expert on application monitoring and server monitoring.

    13. Rackspace Cloud Monitoring: Yes, you can actually monitor third-party cloud services using Rackspace s tools. This platform is based at least in part on Rackspace s 2010 buyout of CloudKick.

    14. SplunkStorm: Best known for its ability to help IT managers analyze and troubleshoot cloud application performance issues.

    15. Zenoss Cloud Monitoring: The company spends considerable time talking about unified monitoring solutions for vCloud, Cisco UCS and NetApp Flexpod. But there s also a hybrid cloud and pure cloud monitoring story here that many MSPs are checking out.

    16. Zyrion: Another cloud monitoring platform that we first learned about in the MSP market. The company s tools support Amazon Web Services, CloudStack and OpenStack monitoring.

17 to 19. Other solutions we re potentially tracking include Nagios; VMware s Hyperic; and Zabbix.

    20. Actually, there is no 20. So we need your help: Which cloud monitoring tools did we overlook? Let us know by posting a comment or emailing me, joe.panettieri [at] penton.com.

That s all for now. We hope to keep a consistent focus on those and other companies that are pitching the cloud monitoring tools to MSPs, CSPs and other types of service providers.

    Monitoring Performance against Performance Objectives

Monitoring Performance It s about Effective Measures

We know from research that clear objectives with effective measures can improve performance by over 30%. So that we can have ‘effective measures’ we need to monitor performance against the objectives

    Monitoring Performance Here’s how

The key to effective monitoring performance is to identify a range of methods – so you can then choose the method that’s easiest to apply and most effective. Let’s begin with the easy part – monitoring performance against quantifiable objectives. Here are some examples

    Monitoring performance against quantifiable objectives

    • Sales reports
    • Deadlines met
    • Error reports
    • Accuracy reports
    • Documents
    • Proposals
    • Plans
    • Budget forecasts
    • Widgets produced

These tend to be the monitoring methods most managers are comfortable with because they’re about what the employee does. It’s easy to see if your employee is achieving a sales target or submitting accurate work and these are great monitoring methods for the quantity, quality and time elements of the job

The difficulty arises when these are the only monitoring methods a manager uses because most jobs aren’t just about the ‘what’, they’re also about ‘how’ your employee’s do their job. About:

    • how they work as a team member
    • how they work with customers
    • how they deal with problems
    • how they deal with change and so on

    In short, their behaviours

If you only monitor the ‘what’ of the job you will only be monitoring half of the job. And if you only monitor half of the job then possibly that’s the only half that the employee will feel it’s worth focusing on!

    Monitoring performance against behavioural objectives

Here are three ways to monitor behaviours

    Observation is taking a planned approach to watching your employee ‘in action’. The idea is that you plan to observe the specific behaviours that you have described in your performance objectives. For example, if you have agreed that a performance objective for team work is ‘offering help to team members’ and ‘contributing to team meetings’ then those are the specific behaviours you plan to observe. So it’s about;

    • looking at the performance objectives you’ve agreed that relate to behavioural elements of the job and then
    • planning how you will observe those behaviours e.g. paying particular attention to the employee’s behaviour in the next team meeting

Report back is about your employee reporting back to you on their performance. This is a really useful technique where the employee is responsible for ‘evidencing ‘their performance against the objectives you’ve agreed

A good example would be if you had an agreed a performance objective from ‘effective time management which included ‘takes action to manage interruptions’. Then the employee would simply report back to you with some examples of when they had taken action to manage interruptions

    Feedback is about getting feedback from people on the employee’s performance. This could be from;

    It’s important that you only look for feedback;

    a) As agreed between you and the employee and

    b) Described in the performance objectives

For example, an objective related to ‘Client Servicing’ is ‘Client feedback reflects a high level of satisfaction ’. This is the feedback you and / or your employee would focus on collecting.

Monitoring Performance against Objectives The Key Principle

The wider the range of methods you use, the more effective the monitoring will be because using a range of methods means you will gain a more balanced view of the employee’s performance

This means you can give the type of feedback that employee’s tell us they want more of, because they find it constructive and motivational, and which improves performance

And of course we know – ‘what get’s measured gets done’ and it’s impossible to measure without monitoring!

It’s also just about impossible to effectively monitor and measure performance without first agreeing performance objectives.
